NFT: 11/16 Knicks: Hornacek "Noah might be inactive for awhile"

Quote:
Joakim Noah was inactive for the second straight game tonight and Jeff Hornacek made it seem as if Noah will remain inactive for the near future. Hornacek said it was possible to make Noah active and carry four healthy centers but added, "I'm not looking to do that right away." He spoke to Noah, who is in the second year of a $72 million deal, about the situation and said Noah is OK with it. "Jo's a team guy. He wants us to win. He sees how they're playing right now. He doesn't want to have to rock the boat but he is competitive and he wants to be out there to help us," Hornacek said. The coach also wants the NBA to abolish the inactive list. He said if there were no inactive list there could be opportunities to play Noah.

Good win last night. 3rd game this year where the Knicks came down from double digits to win the game.

Couple Notes/Observations:

-Courtney Lee has a tweaked hamstring. I'd expect Dotson and McBuckets to get more burn tomorrow against Toronto.

-Hardaway with another good game. 26-6-6. His one area of improvement is he needs to have a better shot selection at times. The half court 3 at the end was unnecessary and stupid.

-KP with his second game in a row where he couldn't get into a rhythm early. Still managed another 20+ game, and a clutch 3 at the end. Keep an eye on this going forward, maybe his elbow is still bothering him

-Ntilikina showed more aggression in the 4th. Driving to the basket, taking the open shots. Hopefully this continues. Per usual, his defense completely changed the tone in the 4th. Guy is a gamer.

-I've said this every game so far this season, but can the Knicks f'kin stop being lazy on close outs and giving wide open 3s? Sluggish off the ball movement on defense is killing us. Seems every team has a field day from behind the arc.

All in all, Knicks could be 10-4 right now if not for giving up 2 20+ leads so far this year. Onto Toronto
Willy still unhappy

Willy Hernangomez is not happy being out of the rotation in New York.

"They tell me to be calm, and that I'm going to play," said Hernangomez. "But I want to play now, not sometime in the future, I like playing important minutes." Hernagomez added that he's not at the point where he'd request a trade and that Knicks' management have ensured him that they do indeed view him as a part of their future, but for now, he'll need to be patient.

I'd honestly send him to the G-League. Let him get some burn down there and tear it up. Worked for Dotson. Right now he is the 3rd best center. He's Kanter-lite.
I thought Lee had cramps

not a hammy, no?
If O'Quinn keeps collecting dumb fouls
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/16/2017 9:08 am : link
And then complaining to refs, that's where I'd start shaving minutes to give to Willy.

Hornacek claimed he tweaked it, Lee says it was cramps and was limping because he got kneed in the back.

I'm pro playing Willy but he's been so bad out there that I don't think they are going to take minutes from KOQ and replace him with Willy. I don't think they trust Willy at the moment.
In that case send him to Westchester
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/16/2017 9:15 am : link
He's not going to get better by just sitting there. Eventually they're going to need him to play, and it will be useless if he's rusty as hell.
I don't understand why Willy and KOQ can't play some minutes together
Tesla : 11/16/2017 9:27 am : link
O'Quinn is sort of a 4/5 tweener anyway, so there should be no reason why they can't both play at the same time. I'd sure as hell rather have Willie playing next to O'Quinn than Lance Thomas.

It's not a good situation to have one of our promising young pieces wasting away like this.

Lance Thomas is a far better defensive player than Willie.
Its a good problem to have.
Keith : 11/16/2017 9:32 am : link
Willy shouldn't be getting many minutes right now. Kanter and KOQ should be and they are. If Noah was getting minutes over Willy, then I can understand the issue, but that's not the case. I'm not as convinced that Willy is apart of the future because Kanter and KOQ fit better, IMO. Willy is a bad defensive player and KOQ is a solid defender.
Didn't check
idiotsavant : 11/16/2017 9:46 am : link
But seemed like weak offensive rebounds last night but that they solved it by getting some higher % 2pt shots for a while rather than fixing the O boards.

as it relates to 3 pointers yielded
Pep22 : 11/16/2017 9:57 am : link
I place a lot of blame not so much on the close-out but the tendency to stray from proficient shooters and to rotate prematurely or double unnecessarily
I know there are those out there who aren't THj fans
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/16/2017 10:24 am : link
But his last 10 games he's averaging 21/5.4/3.7 with 1.5 steals and a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.

Knicks 2018
TyreeHelmet : 11/16/2017 10:25 am : link
Incredibly happy about this season thus far. Night and day from last year.

I know this is beyond wishful thinking but hopefully you guys will entertain me. What are the chances the Knicks could go after Lebron and Paul George. All the rumors have them going to the Lakers, but the Knicks would be a far more attractive offer. They have an MVP candidate big man who can provide floor spacing and rim protection and a young defensive stopper at PG who can also stretch the floor/ play off ball. And the Knicks are in the East with a muchhh easier path to the Finals.

Why pick the Lakers? To play with Lonzo Ball and Ingram? That team even with Lebron and PG has not shot against the Warriors.

The salary cap next year projects to be around 102 million. The Knicks would have to dump Noah, Lee or THJ, stretch Baker/ Kuz, Thomas and maybe even Kanter. You would be left with a core of-

KP
Frank
THJ
Dotson
Willy
KOQ ( keep cap hold and resign going over cap)
Mcdermott ( keep cap hold and resign over cap)

Rolling out a starting 5 of KP, PG, Lebron, THJ, Frank is a very formidable 5. It would take serious cap maneuvering and atleast a 1st round pick to dump Noah, but they could get to 60 mill in cap space if they had to. I'm sure teams would take Lee or Kanter for free or even give up assets for them. Kanter may even opt out the way he's playing.

I love the way this team is playing but its fun to dream.Any scenario this happens?
THJR...
Italianju : 11/16/2017 10:30 am : link
has played great since those early games where he couldnt hit the broadside of a barn and only got a rebound if it fell in his lap. Sure his shot selection could use some work, but its not like he is JR Smith in that area. His D has also been avg, and i mean that as a compliment.
THJr is definitely an improved player.
bceagle05 : 11/16/2017 10:42 am : link
It wasn't so much the money that bothered me, but the need to have a player like him in a "tanking" year, especially after drafting two guards a couple of weeks earlier and having Courtney Lee under contract. At the time, I was under the impression we'd be dumping Melo for next to nothing and would be winning 25 games this year. Happy to be proven wrong so far.
A lot to like about THJr,
Keith : 11/16/2017 10:47 am : link
but he's still playing a little selfish for my taste and he's the only one on the team who does. It's not just the shot selection either. That being said, the good so far definitely outweighs the bad. He can get to the rim whenever he wants and he's a great finisher too. When he does square up, his shot is legit. He's another guy on the team that can create his own shot which is vital. He busts his a** too which I love.
lots of good things happening out there
Enzo : 11/16/2017 10:50 am : link
But I'm going to continue to harp on this - we need to play faster and shoot more threes. I have no issue with KP taking mid-range shots. But too many of these other guys are taking too many long twos. We're 4th from the bottom in three point attempts per game. I'm not saying we have to go full Houston...but we have enough shooters getting big minutes (Lee, McDermott, KP, Lee)...we should be taking advantage of them.
Even if workable, I'm not sure I want Lebron to come and take over
mfsd : 11/16/2017 10:59 am : link
the Knicks. Everywhere he's gone, it's taken a year to sort out the team chemistry. And he ain't getting younger (33 next year...he's reached the point of his career where he picks his spots in games and during the season to turn it on and carry his team.

Maybe he'd be invigorated by the challenge of winning in NY. Maybe he'd deliver a championship, maybe not. I just love the vibe of this young, energetic, no drama team right now. I'd rather keep building a team that can eventually beat whatever team Lebron is on in the playoffs.

I have my heart set on Klay Thompson in 2019. Klay will be 29 that year. Of course, we're still paying Joakim fucking Noah $19 million that year (unless some team feels like bailing the Knicks out of that one), and have to plan a big KP deal in the not too distant future.

But how money would Klay be (replacing Lee in the starting lineup) playing with KP, Frank and THJr?

Add an enforcing center who lays the smack down underneath in the draft and I could see a powerhouse D with these guys plus Klay. Any Draymond types in the draft next year?

Lance Thomas should be absolutely forbidden from taking any shot that's not a wide open corner 3. In fact, he should just sit in the corner the whole time we our on offense....I never want to see him dribble the ball or try to drive to the hoop again.
Lebron/ Klay
TyreeHelmet : 11/16/2017 11:33 am : link
I understand the concerns and false hope about Lebron and free agents in general. I just think the Knicks are a fare more attractive option than the Lakers. Quite honestly I just don't see the appeal of the Lakers. And I'm stealing this from Dan Patrick, but Lebron winning a title with 3 teams and winning a championship with the Knicks is almost more impressive than winning 6 titles.

As far as Lebron aging, he looks better than ever. And when he does lose a step he could easily become a dominant power forward. Look at what Tom brady is doing at 40- these guys are machines.

I also dream about Klay in 2019. I highly doubt that ownership is going to spend the astronomical cost to keep those 4. He would be perfect for the knicks or pretty much any team.

I would hate to see Lebron on the Knicks -
Del Shofner : 11/16/2017 11:34 am : link
great as he is as a player, he's a bitch and a trouble-maker, plus he's on the downward slope of his career. No thanks.

i agree with you on lakers and agreed knicks are a better fit but lebron is not taking on that challenge at this ppint in his career...

going to la is stupid also, doesnt he hate lavar ball?
he might be on the downslope of his career...

I understand that, but his other issues are still a show-stopper in my view, plus there's a salary cap and he would eat up a lot of it, meaning we'd lack the money to sign other players. I still say no thanks.

Really nice breakdown of the little things that Dougie Buckets

Dove on the floor to save the game yesterday. Lets keep him if possible. 4-20 seems fair.

Totally agree. Kanter/ Doug and likely a pick between 31-34 is a solid return.
Yeah, it is a good return. And I was a Melo fan.
Heisenberg : 11/16/2017 2:30 pm : link
those two guys want to be part of something and it shows in how they play. Melo will actually need to learn that to make that work in OKC and I honestly hope he does. Come playoff time, I need Russ-Melo-PG to be formidable just so there's more awesome NBA playoff games to watch.

But right now, the Knicks are better without Melo because it has put the focus on Porzingis who is better than Melo right now and because the two guys they got for Melo are solid players who play team basketball.
Yeah I steretyped Dougie as a spot-up shooter
bceagle05 : 11/16/2017 2:43 pm : link
but he brings a lot more to the table. Should definitely match any reasonable RFA offers he gets this summer. Young player too, who can grow with the kids.
The main personnel issue they have to sort out

Is what to do about Kanter and Willy.Taking their time to build a roster and letting the young players grow is such a refreshing approach. They may FINALLY be heading in the right direction.
I honestly dont want LeBron
twostepgiants : 11/16/2017 7:57 pm : link
Im enjoying this tesm right now and think ther can build a real long term contender with Porzingas and Frank at just 22 and 19. They have all of their picks and will eventually have cap space when these guys hit their prime in 5 years. Its gonna be a fun ride if we dont get impatient.
