Is it worth looking into?
Can you make a living doing it? Thanks in advance...
I did for a while

when i relocated to denver.

When I started I did ok. I tracked expenses etc. to determine a realistic hourly and was around $20/ hour which was fine for the trade off in flexibility etc. Since then, they have pushed down rates, and flooded the market with drivers reducing surge/ prime time opportunity. Surge was the only way i felt really paid me. The rest was grinding and waiting.

As a part time job it is still ok. It is hard to depend on the money.

You're gonna beat on your vehicle. take that into account, there were nights i worked i didn't feel like i "made money". I felt like i was liquidating an asset.

I was in / near a city. I don't know where you are so take this all with a grain of salt.

People say they can make money at all hours. but i depended mostly on nights. and most importantly weekend nights and often got done at 4. So consider that would be a lifestyle to an extent. if it is your primary source of income, you really can't miss driving then.

All kinds of people. Some are interesting and nice. some are not. Depends on your personality. I do ok, but I got sick of humanity from time to time.

It takes a little time to learn the job, even if you know the territory. Don't expect any help from the company or any other drivers.

I personally felt that i was cheated on calculations on many occasions, and I have heard that among other drivers. There is little recourse.

My takeaway is it could be a good gig as a second job to make a little cash. It is hard to live that way

also...tip your uber/ lyft drivers. They are grinding out a tough living and providing a hell of a service at a cheap price. Don't be an asshole.
Tipping Uber Drivers

On tipping, do you give the driver the cash or did you add it online?

Thanks man, I appreciate it!
I drove for Uber for a short time

when I realized that I could not make money at it.

In order to make money you had to be available late at night, especially on weekends, and early in the mornings. The late night driving is to transport drunks around town. Let that sink in a while. The early mornings were, more or less, to get people to work.

I didn't want to be up all hours of the night to transport drunks so I worked mainly 8am - 6pm. Not big money making hours.

However, that was before they put the ability to tip in their app. In fact, they told their customers that it wasn't necessary to tip. After Lyft became a viable competitor, with the ability to tip in the app, Uber finally came around.

One thing to keep in mind when you're reading the promotional material from Uber is that you're paid from the time you pick up your rider to the time you drop them off. How many miles it takes you to get to them and how many miles it takes to get back to where you were is on you.

I had a person that wanted me to take them 100 miles away. That would have been a decent fare, but the 100 mile ride back would have been on me. Plus, it would have taken around 4 hours to complete. Screw that.
I drove for about 8 months

You can't make much money by just turning on the app and taking whatever they send you. The only way to make a profit is to drive surge. Problem is Uber is now screwing/reducing the surge paid to drivers. They are still charging the passengers surge pricing but they are keeping most of it for themselves. Their upfront pricing is a scam. Do some research before starting. You can find some great information at the following website.

Just curious...

is there a way to request your favorite drivers? I've never used the app, but it seems like if you did a great job you could build up a client list of regulars that would help make it more worth your while.

Not really. Uber doesn't want the driver and rider becoming friendly. They are afraid drivers will arrange rides off app and cut Uber out. Some drivers do just that. I think they are crazy because they are then running a cab with no insurance but there are a lot of drivers that do things that put them at risk.

You can arrange to pick someone up and once you are there with the rider have them request a ride. Uber claims that the closest driver gets the ping but I have found that is not the case. I have had riders request a ride sitting in my back seat and the ping goes to someone else.

I believe there is an app called USURV that allows you to do that.

Many uber drivers I've used in NYC will give me their card and say let them know when and where and they'll come get me like a car service and charge me the same thing uber would have in the app.

I'm totally fine with it and I have used that many times beating Laguardia cab lines and not having to take the shuttle to the uber area.

if you are a frequent traveler it's the best option, only downside is they may not always be readily available in which case you need to fall back to normal modes of transportation. All they need is a credit card app. and it's probably a violation of the uber/lyft agreement they sign, but so what.

Uber is a BULLSHIT company. I did the Uber Eats for 1 week. Then I found out they're taking 35% of my ticket. I understand it's 25% for regular Uber.
If you don't need to live off it, and you can put up with their BULLSHIT. It's better than digging ditches

I know a lot of Uber drivers in my area are also drivers for various car services. But, even then, they wouldn't have their own credit card app.

I have a black RAV4 and had a lady flag me down recently thinking I was her Uber ride.

I really only use Uber very sparingly, usually when I'm in Manhattan in an area/time I can't get a cab or need to be on a schedule. This is not very often. To get to Manhattan or around my area, my wife will use car service. There is one near us that is never more than 5 minutes to wait and the prices are pretty good. I also live in an area where a lot of green and yellow cabs pass, on their way to the BQE, so I can almost always flag down a cab if I need one in a pinch.
