LA Times piece on Rosen and Darnold from Sept 28th

Milton : 11/17/2017 8:21 pm
I was gonna post a snippet from it on one or both of the recent QB threads, figuring there must've already been a thread on this back in September or October, but if there was I don't remember it. In any case, the article is basically just the opinions/insights of Troy Aikman, Jordan Palmer, Rick Neuheisel, and an anonymous NFL executive on Rosen and Arnold. What stood out to me was what Neuheisel had to say...

Quote:
Rosen’s arm will jump off the screen.

If Rosen and Darnold were in a throwing contest, they’d call the fight. It wouldn’t go the distance. Rosen’s arm is way more talented. I’ll bet he’d have a higher score on his SAT, and in a political discourse he’d have opinions that you’d marvel at given his age.

But Josh’s issue is going to be his personality. When he doesn’t think you know what you’re talking about, he ain’t afraid to tell you that you don’t know what you’re talking about. That bothers a bunch of the proletariat in scouting circles. If you have something to offer, he’s going to devour it.

You watch the fourth quarter of the Texas A& M game, and you see NFL throw after NFL throw after NFL throw. Doing it against the odds. And yeah, he got lucky. He tried to throw one away and it was a touchdown pass. But we see that every weekend in the NFL. What we saw was him putting the ball on the money time after time.

He doesn’t have a Dez Bryant to throw to. He doesn’t have a Julio Jones to throw to. He’s making it work with the guys he has.

He said a very mature thing after the game at Memphis. He said, “I’ve got to stop playing hero ball.” Because given what happened against Texas A& M, he had to throw those balls down the field. You don’t have to throw that ball across your body against Memphis. To me, that’s a sign of maturity. I think he’s going to be sensational.

I think he’s got a unique skill set. And you’re talking to a guy who didn’t want him to have it. Because my kid [Jerry] was competing against him, my kid was trying to win the job. I wanted to find things I didn’t like. But he has every throw.

I am not surprised if it came down to talent alone Rosen is the #1 QB in the draft. Interviews will be vital for Rosen. If he nails those then he very well could be the #1 overall pick.

Will come off as ass-kicking leadership in a n NFL QB

A lot of the great QBs were kind of assholes: Peyton, Marino, Big Ben

Eli is unusual in being such a nice guy and also a great QB

Aaron Rodgers is another with a reputation for being an arrogant asshole and yet an argument can be made that he is the best of the bunch. And I wonder how well-liked Tom Brady is. What matters isn't whether or not his teammates enjoy tossing back cold beers with their QB, but whether or not they believe he can get them into the endzone when they are down by 4 points with under two minutes left to go and no timeouts.
I guess we've identified this year's Cam Robinson

Can't wait for six months of Milton touting Josh Rosen.

Just a note - Neuheisel said just this week that he thinks Mayfield is the #1 QB prospect.

You could be right about that, but it's a little soon. One similarity between the two is that I dismissed the character concerns (a weed arrest) which had some downgrading Cam Robinson and I dismiss the leadership concerns which have some downgrading Rosen. Things like character and leadership are very real concerns, but unless I can see it for myself in interviews with the player on youtube, I take them with a grain of salt. It could easily be misinformation.

p.s.--Notice how the anonymous NFL executive spins the gunslinger aspect to Rosen's game...
Quote:
He seems to have good vision, but then he makes poor decisions. He forces balls sometimes and trusts his arm too much. He just takes some gambles that are not necessarily the smart play. He can put the ball in harm’s way, but he can also make the big plays doing that. He’s got some gambler in him — some Jeff George, some Jay Cutler. He’s got all those same qualities, where he has all the physical tools. But he needs to become a more consistent, more disciplined football player.
He could've just as easily compared him to Eli Manning or Brett Favre for having those traits, but he chose two QBs with a losing resume, both of whom had reputations for being unliked.

are going to fall in love with Rosen, but another pocket passer scares me without a good OL.

Lombardi's .. If Eli had wheels which he never did he would
be as good as anybody . I still think he has two good seasons left if we go QB give me Rosen .

I'm fine with it if they can put together an OL.
