Just out of curiosity how many are still rooting for wins?

BestFeature : 11/18/2017 10:12 am
I remember back in 2003 your fanhood was challenged by some if you admitted that you were rooting for the top draft pick. So with the benefit of hindsight we have two SBs since then, one in the biggest upset in NFL history. But it came at the "huge" price of being 4-12 in 2003 and not something like 6-10. I wonder if there are people that are still staunchly in the group of "you never root against your team". Or if everyone's on board with a 1-15 season but the opportunity to draft a franchise QB.

I would sign for 1-15 right now. 2017 no longer matters.
Sure....love to beat Washington next Thursday

Would make for a great Black Friday in DC!

I can't bring myself on GameDay to root for a loss. Play by play I'm rooting for the giants. However, after a loss, I look at our draft position.

I can respect that. I do have a sort of out of body experience now. Like this isn't my team on the field. It's just a mindset. I don't watch anymore since it's tough to watch and root for your team to lose.
Only if it means spoiling the seasons for

I'd sign for #1 pick

in draft...with Cleveland challenging..going to need to keep losing.
It s really a good question
joeinpa : 11/18/2017 10:23 am : link
In 03 I definitely rooted for a loss the final game that season.

This year I literally since 1-6 going into Seattle game I literally did not know how I was going to feel during the game.

I found myself immediately in normal mode if rooting for a win

Rams game began hoping for win, it soon did not care. SF game actually found myself hoping they would lose. At this point with an enticing top 3 pick available can t see that changing.

Meaningful games late in the season are what makes it fun. With that not happening this season, just root for good performance but a loss

Not as upset at a loss at this point of the season
During a game, I can't help get excited by big plays by the Giants
baadbill : 11/18/2017 10:32 am : link
(this year that is a more theoretical issue) - but I definitely want the Giants to have the first pick in every round.
No way I can not
Clintqb17 : 11/18/2017 10:47 am : link
Root for giants when the play cowboys and eagles.
I always want them to win
DavidinBMNY : 11/18/2017 10:51 am : link
But I'm detached myself emotionally from the fortunes of the team this year and using the 1/2 glass full approach of getting the highest draft pick since LT. That worked out.
draft
Hilary : 11/18/2017 10:56 am : link
The draft is a crap shoot (as they say).No one knows which of the quarterbacks will be the best and whether any of them are better than better than Webb is unclear.Right now the defense is worse than the offense by quite a bit so "suck for Sam" is not necessarily the way to go. Right now I am rooting for Wheeler and Flowers to show they can be book ends and Fluker to play well and re sign.
I have been a Giants fan since 1955, have lived trough some

terrible years of football and have always believed the Giants could win every game they paled and I still do! I will always cheer for a win, to do otherwise is just stupid.

Ok rooting for a win and short term gratification is fine.

But to call rooting for a shot at a franchise quarterback is not only myopic it's ........... well it s stupid.

watch but I watch the games like it is preseason. So I am not rooting for wins.Season is over. The coach's will be gone. That said there is talent on this roster but they did not come ready to play this year. Starting with preseason this attitude like domn't play starters because they will get hurt is pure garbage. I watch the Pats and they treat everything as a learning and getting ready to be the best. The Giants need to start doing the same.

Grew up watching them in the pre-LT years
Don't you guys think that finishing 4-12 rather than 6-10
BestFeature : 11/18/2017 11:39 am : link
in 2003 was worth it. There's no guarantee that Eli would have been traded to us or even he were he'd be good and win SBs. But 6-10 would have literally not improved a single thing except make us feel slightly better two random Sundays in our lives.
Root for the Giants, Bet the other way
KingBlue : 11/18/2017 11:48 am : link
Softens the blow. Pretty good chance at making a profit over the remaining games. Of course I bet very little so it doesn't sway me. This is a new endeavor for me so it's like a challenge to see if I am right that there is money to be made on a season that goes south from the beginning. I looked back and thought if I had just listened to my head I would have made money at the end of the Coughlin era.

It complicates things to have to bet against a spread.

I'm not advocating that anyone else does this... I was sharing what I'm doing in response to your question.
As someone who remembers
Dr. D : 11/18/2017 11:58 am : link
having the 5th pick (in '96?), when there were 4 blue chip picks (we ended up with a half blind DE) and yes, 6-10 in '03 would've made it much harder, maybe unwise to trade for Eli, I'm not exactly rooting hard for wins right now.

As far as the trade for Eli, I know some will say we could've taken Ben. To me Ben was much more of a gamble. Eli was playing and beating SEC teams. Ben's schedule included teams like SUNY Buffalo. Nothing against them, but no one would mistake them for 'Bama, UF or LSU.
During the game, I have to root for the Giants.
Ira : 11/18/2017 12:13 pm : link
Between games, I hope we get the best pick.
Ben had consistently better teams than the Giants IMO

Losses don't sting as much, but I always want to see the Giants win. Especially with 4 division games left, with the Dallas and Philly games potentially having playoff implications (or at least seeding implications in Philly's case).
My view has always been..
Sean : 11/18/2017 12:15 pm : link
Root for wins always **UNLESS** you are in the market for a franchise QB. I rooted for wins in 2013, 14 & 15. The difference in the 8th pick & 12th pick is nothing.

This year at 1-8 is different though. Wins do not accomplish anything in the bigger picture. If the Giants won, I’d be happy for Eli, but that’s it. I’m all in on either Darnold or Rosen. I look at Wentz, Goff, Watson, Prescott, etc & I want a young franchise QB to pair up with a new HC. It’s time.
And I’ll never root for a loss..
Sean : 11/18/2017 12:17 pm : link
but I don’t be mad with a loss & can absolutely find the positive.

This year...
BocaGiants91 : 11/18/2017 2:10 pm : link
The first few losses were tough, but after adjusting to how bad the team is, i just root for them to not embarrass the franchise, I don’t root for them to lose, but am realistic about any wins this year, looks bleak , the draft position will be some consolation , I think the wholesale cleanout of the FO and coaching staff will be more so a consolation than the draft pick position.
As I said in the last thread
section125 : 11/18/2017 3:23 pm : link
that asked this question - I will never root for a loss. Will only root for a win.
This may sound stupid but the only thing that makes this kind of...
BestFeature : 11/18/2017 3:59 pm : link

Is it realistic to root for a win,
Doomster : 11/18/2017 4:25 pm : link
with what we are putting on the field?

I look at it like, will this team get better with a higher draft pick than a lower one?

Theoretically yes.....but complicating this outcome, is who will be making the decisions on picking that guy, AND what direction this team will be going based on that pick?

So I will watch games, not wishing for a win or loss, just accepting the outcome for what it is....it would be nice to see certain players, like Webb, get some playing time, which will influence which direction this team may go in....
Well
thomasa510 : 11/18/2017 5:53 pm : link
Well the reality is that whether you root for a win or loss doesn't make a lick of difference on the outcome.

Losses are better for the future the team than wins , but it would be great to see some of the young players develop and bring something positive out of this season.
these losses have been brutal on my stomach,
gidiefor : Mod : 11/18/2017 6:51 pm : link
absolutely brutal. In my gut, I cannot root for a loss even though I know that it is advantageous in terms of our draft pick.

I am fukken miserable!!!
Rooting for a Win?
Alwaysblue22 : 11/18/2017 7:34 pm : link
Always rooting for a win. But realistically I don't see any..now Sterling Shepard is "questionable" due to "illness". Most likely someone will be benched by Macdisaster for breaking a rule. I think they may be trying to lose on purpose On the other hand, they are bad enough to lose no matter how hard they try to win. They would struggle against Alabama right now. In fact Alabama would probably win the game. But look at the bright side , in order to become great in this league you have to really stink to get high picks in every draft round, except if you are the Cleveland Browns
Once the season is lost and the games are meaningless, I think
wgenesis123 : 11/18/2017 8:22 pm : link
its wrong to be critical of who anyone roots for. What does it matter one way or another? For me its to soon to root for the Giants to lose. what good is it now if they win a few at the end of the season. Get down to those last three games and I get it. Right now to much can change.
As though it makes a difference in the real world

At least to have them keep their mouths shut.

When watching the game, can't root for a loss.

If the Giants win against the Division and hurt the others, I'm fine with slipping in draft order. I hate the teams in the East and always want them to lose.
Not rooting either way ...

I root for wins
tomjgiant : 11/19/2017 6:52 am : link
Because i am a Giants fan and because how i root will not affect what actually happens on the field anyway.
I was thrilled with the Denver win
bob_in_ec : 11/19/2017 9:59 am : link
and it would be great to beat the skins, eagles and/or cowboys. I'm a Giants fan(short for fanatic). My expectations for each game has certainly been lowered. But why give up and root for a high draft pick when so many are busts? I started following the Giants in the 50's and have been a fan throughout their ups and downs. I never tune in to watch them lose. Hope springs eternal.

Joey in VA : 11/19/2017 10:26 am : link
I expect the Chiefs to roll right over us and after the game a loss means a better draft slot. That said, when the game is on I live and die with each play, that never changes but the loss hangover is non existent.
I’m indifferent about the Giants at this point
trueblueinpw : 11/19/2017 10:40 am : link
Last week’s game was the first time in my 4+ decades as a fan that I really didn’t care about watching or listening to the Giants. Today while the Giants are fumbling around I’ll be at the parish gym watching my youngest playing her CYO basketball game. Can’t wait! When I get home I’ll flip on the game but who really cares what the score is? This is the worst season I can ever remember as a Giants fan. Utterly indifferent.

Why not? You think the draft will solve all the problems?
It's not just draft order - they have to draft better.

I just cannot consider wishing for a loss as being part of being a fan. I get the logic though.

Chiefs are struggling too - lot of injuries, significant ones.
Giants could win.
