NFT: NFT- Computer Help

Bleedin Blue : 11/18/2017 2:12 pm
I know from past posts that many here are very good at computers!

Let me start off by saying I'm an Idiot!!!

I'm looking for help to get into my computer. It's windows 7 and there's only one admin account and I forgot my password, and I don't have a recovery disk.
Is there any thing I can do to get around my login?? HELP!

Should be able to reset the pass after you enter an incorrect pw.

Thanks but that doesn't work.
I don't know of a way around it.

Do you have any accounts with admin level privileges?

Think long & hard about that password. Try often.

I know lots of people used “password” or “admin”or “123456” or birthdays or kids or wives names. Used to be no concern about hacking do easy ones did the trick. Put yourself in the mindset that was around when you got the computer, Have you tried the basics?
Just check

the post-it note on your desk like a normal person.
get a notebook

and write them down. How the hell can you remember 50 passwords.
Essential to use a password manager these days.

I used LastPass for a couple of years then switched to Dashlane. I had no gripe with LastPass but I do like Dashlane a log as it integrates well with browsers.

Agree, I use PassWord Safe. I have about 250 passwords to track

I use RoboForm to manage my passwords, but like the moron I am , I can't remember my password to get into my computer. In the future I will make sure I have a recovery disk and another administrator login for my wife, so that this doesn't happen again.
Ok

#1) If you are using encryption, you're probably sunk. I don't think there's a good way to beat encryption, unless you have NSA level skills.

#2) Presuming you do not have encryption, here's a link:Forgot Windows 7 Password Have No Reset Disk

If you don't have a install disk, you can try the second link: How to reset your windows password without an install cd. The Chntpw disk they ask you to burn is actually a linux utility disk, I think...I've used those successfully many times, but they will NOT work with encryption!

3) Once you create your new password, make a backup of it with a rescue disk (that can be a CD or USB drive). Here are instructions. I would not email it to myself, email can be cracked (for example, the 1 billion Yahoo users who's accounts were cracked).

Good luck!

John, thanks tried and doesn't work. Trying to get a W-7 recovery disk, my brother-I -law has some old laptops at work which run W-7 , he's going to try to create a recovery disk
Hmm, the linux boot disk trick usually works
JohnF : 11/19/2017 12:28 am : link
that was the Chmtpw disk. This youtube trick should do it, though:

How to Hack Windows 7 Admin Password without any Software

The video forgets to reset the files at the end (once you're in). Use File Explorer, delete the file you renamed to Utilman (the copy of cmd.exe), rename Utilman1 to Utilman, then reboot. That way, your pc is less at risk.

Will give that a try in morning thanks!!
Please tell me you have all your data ...
short lease : 11/19/2017 3:38 am : link
and important files backed up?

As long as you have the stuff that you created (Don't need to back up entire hard drives or programs - just files that you created) backed up - you can always re-install the OS (and re-create that admin account/password) and and your programs.

Then copy your files back to the hard drive.

Good Luck - hope it works out.
Update
Bleedin Blue : 11/21/2017 3:15 pm : link
Was trying everything suggested to no avail. I never mentioned it to my daughter, so yesterday my wife said to her that I was having a problem, and lo and behold she tells me my password!! She helped me set up my computer, but I didn't think I told her my password! I wrote down my password and made another logon with admin privileges so this doesn't happen again!

Thanks to all for the help!!
why go thru all the trouble of another account etc???
Mighty : 11/21/2017 5:13 pm : link
if your password hint cant make you remember your password then either the hint is terrible or your password is terrible. Take the time and make sure your password hint is something that will make you remember it while not giving it totally away
