Tony Romo, the analyst

B in ALB : 11/19/2017 6:55 pm
Not much to say here other than he is absolutely terrific as an analyst, imo.

He does probably the best job of all the TV guys breaking down assignments and responsibilities pre-snap. He might be the best I've ever heard.

Really excellent analysis and commentary. A pleasure to watch a game he's involved in announcing.

Dan Fouts and that other idiot James Lofton on the other hand are complete dogshit.

But that's what you get when your season is in the dumpster.
He provides great insight

but needs to talk less. He never stops talking and it’s tiresome after a while. Being the smartest guy in the room gets old after a while.

That said it’s better than most of the other garbage these days.

Will come with more experience. But he's trying to break down complex scenarios in a matter of seconds. It's really a nice change of pace from the other clowns reminiscing about yesteryear.
As an analyst, I like Romo a ton

He knows his shit and adds a bit of humor too. Like how he stayed hydrated in Mexico City: by drinking a bunch of Corona’s.
Yeah, and he loves Mexico

They're all chatterboxes at the start. You guys won't get the reference but there's a famous cricket commentator from Australia called Richie Benaud who had a simple rule all TV commentators should follow

“Put your brain into gear and if you can add to what’s on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up”

it's a simple rule but my lord it's seldom held to. His eight rules of commentary should be in every box

"1.Never ask for a statement.
2. Remember the value of a pause.
3. There are no teams in the world called 'we' or 'they'.
4. Avoid cliches and banalities, such as 'he's hit that to the boundary', 'he won't want to get out now', 'of course', 'as you can see on the screen'.
5. The Titanic was a tragedy, the Ethiopian drought a disaster, and neither bears any relation to a dropped catch.
6. Put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.
7. Concentrate fiercely at all times.
8. Above all, don't take yourself too seriously, and have fun."

I appreciate the insight from B in this regard, him being someone who

has played the game. I’d been wondering what more experienced football minds thought of Romo’s analysis, whether it was perhaps too elementary or juiced up or whatever. I’ve been enjoying Romo’s commentary so it’s nice to know that he’s genuine in his analysis. I wonder if Romo’s value add will diminish much once players he is familiar with filter out of the league or are the principles that he’s familiar with more or less evergreen?

I agree about Romo, his delivery takes away from anything he says worthwhile. After all, it is announcing, and delivery and likeability matter, I don’t want to be watching someone scream like a six year old kid into my living room, even if what he is saying might be somewhat interesting (and I even think his analysis is overrated). I am still waiting for the network to lose announcers and only put on the sounds of the game or at least give us that option.

B in ALB : 11/19/2017 7:29 pm : link
pre snap read in about 5 seconds - then being exactly spot on as the play unfolds is excellent television. No on else does it like this.

He's not watching the play unfold - THEN breaking it down.

He's giving you the view of the QB prior to the snap as he calls protection, audibles or not, and offers the exact thought process of the QB. Then he let's the play go live and he's been basically perfect.

No one else in TV is doing that.

Gruden, Collinsworth, etc are almost amateurish compared to what this guy can do. He's a better analyst than QB. haha.

He's great. Fantastic at that part. It's the post play chat he's a bit too busy with. Even pre-snap he's got a lot of information to impart that sometimes he's talking over the play.
As much as Tom Brady is hated .....
Manny in CA : 11/19/2017 7:52 pm : link

By many, Romo remains, instead (for many good reasons) in awe of him.

Romo used to play Houdini to get some great throws off; Brady on the other hand, is standing tall, all the time, then deftly stepping to the open throwing lanes at the last moment.

As Romo noted, NOBODY does that better.
I agree with Romo on both accounts.
robbieballs2003 : 11/19/2017 7:53 pm : link
I think he is good to listen too but needs to gain some more experience. I also think Cris Collinsworth is great too. While he isn't as in depth as Romo is pre-snap he does point out a lot of things that most people don't. I also love the things he sees on a normal play that most miss like an OL making a huge block that was missed by almost every fan because they were watching the ball.

That's not fair, B.

new Madden. B is right about Romo breaking down a play before it happens, it is amazing.

He talks, but it is all educational and the Corona hydration comment was funny.
The first thought when listening to him
Rflairr : 11/20/2017 1:35 am : link
Is he’s likely going to do this for a little bit and then try to get into coaching. I think he’ll want to be closer to the action. He’ll be a OC somewhere
Think he is doing a nice job too in the booth
Jimmy Googs : 11/20/2017 7:45 am : link
but he looks a bit sloppy for tv. Take a look at his clothes when camera goes on him...needs a good tailor and wardrobe check.

There are times Romo goes on a little too long,
Section331 : 11/20/2017 10:10 am : link
but he's nowhere nearly as egregious as Chris Collinsworth (who I otherwise like). Romo does a very good job. Sure, he can be coached to tighten it up a bit, but for a guy new to the gig, he does an excellent job.

I've never understand why former players, especially QB's, don't describe what players are looking at and looking for. Romo is one of the few who does that. Collinsworth used to, but does it far less often now. Maybe things have changed so much since he last played, that he doesn't feel as comfortable doing it?
And Dan Fouts remains brutal to listen to.
Section331 : 11/20/2017 10:12 am : link
It's like he's watching a different game. When KC was driving for their tying FG, 16 seconds left, inside their 20, Fouts is saying that they have to throw it into the end zone or the clock would run out.

They still had a TO left. What a dumbass.
