Is there a cant miss QB in this draft?

Sean : 11/20/2017 7:08 am
In 2003, Eli was a clear cut number 1 pick alongside Big Ben & Rivers who were considered big time QB prospects. Granted, a ton of football & player evaluations still need to be done.

I dont think Darnold is ready.

I liked what I saw from Rosen, but we all hear about the off the field issues & I do worry that he is dependent on an above average offensive line.

Mayfield has completely turned me off with his maturity issues- running from cops & grabbing his crotch? I dont give him the keys to the franchise. Just look at what Eli has been & what Wentz is going. I expect the QB to be mature.

I havent seen enough Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen.

I think we will be top 5 & Id like to come away with a franchise changing player. Maybe that player is Saquan Barkley.

Can he salvage an offense with a below par offensive line?
There is NEVER a "can't miss" player in any draft.
JohnB : 11/20/2017 7:48 am : link
They all can miss. Even the best, even those drafted in the top 3 or top slot. History has shown that over and over again.

Yeah, they way he laid down against Texas A&M was disappointing.
Eli is going to be 37
The_Boss : 11/20/2017 8:24 am : link
Webb isnt anywhere near as talented as Rosen or Darnold (Sy56). Chances are the NYG wont pick this high again next year. Most of us knew about Rosen and (especially) Darnold a year ahead. I couldnt tell you what QBs are going to be available in the 2019 draft. Take the QB you want, even if you need to trade up and get him from inside the top 5.
I'm still
jtgiants : 11/20/2017 8:24 am : link
Firmly of the belief Darnold will be a star
Injuries are my only concern
Milton : 11/20/2017 8:40 am : link
He's no Eli in that department. A shoulder injury caused him to give up tennis and a shoulder injury cost him a big chunk of his sophomore season at UCLA. And finger and concussion issues cost him 1 1/2 games this year. Other than that, I think he's as "can't miss" as it gets when it comes to the QB position.
p.s.--I think he would benefit from riding the bench for a year or two and packing on some muscle from an NFL weightlifting program in the meantime. He's 6'4" 215lbs at age 20 so it's reasonable to believe he could naturally add 10 pounds to that frame without it effecting his mechanics.
How is
cokeduplt : 11/20/2017 8:40 am : link
He needs the Oline not to suck a knock on Rosen now? Thats virtually every QB

Eli was about the same size I believe
There is.
Beezer : 11/20/2017 8:41 am : link

But you're asking the wrong question.

It should be, is there anyone here who will be able to accurately predict which one (or ones) are that guy?
There is no such thing in any draft
Mike from Ohio : 11/20/2017 9:21 am : link
Any QB without the right team around him, coaching and support can wash out of the league.
What about Webb?
Jerz44 : 11/20/2017 9:23 am : link
Eli still has a few years left and we just drafted Webb last year.

Are we really going to draft another QB? I'd rather get a stud O line or trench player. (I don't follow CFB thou so I have no idea who's out there.)

Very true. And you might get lucky and get a Tom Brady in a late round.
Its a crapshoot - what did Sy say? Something like the history shows
PatersonPlank : 11/20/2017 9:36 am : link
that 2 will become really good starters, 2 will become journeymen/backup type guys, and 2 will not make it? Think about it, people were really thinking that Leaf was better than Manning. Knowing history, we would logically almost being better waiting until Rd 2 and seeing which one falls to us (if we do draft a QB high). This was we get an OL player or Barkley, and then "1 of the 6" to challenge Webb with.
Typically leery of the gospel on prospects
idiotsavant : 11/20/2017 9:42 am : link
This time of year.

Its probably worthwhile to see a pile of rankings by various people. Then the combine moves people around. Maybe more than it should at times.
Im really warming up to the idea..
Sean : 11/20/2017 9:52 am : link
of drafting Saquan or an offensive lineman, and then taking a QB in the 2nd/3rd round to compete with Webb. Obviously not to force a pick, but sticking to the board. But, these first round QBs are far from locks and could potentially really set the franchise back.

Yeah, I'm of this mindset too. Barkley, a top G or T, or even a top DB or LB. Then pick whoever slips in the 2nd. We may get a guy like Allen, Jackson, or the OK St kid. Some people think these guys are the best QB's anyway. Opinions are all over.
RB OT LB
bluepepper : 11/20/2017 10:17 am : link
can all bust out too. Trent Richardson, Greg Robinson, Vernon Gholston off the top of my head. No guarantees with this stuff. QB is a thousand times more important than those other positions so it makes sense to spend a valuable draft pick there. You can't be afraid like the Browns have been the last couple of years. Go for it.
A good read on Lamar Jackson
ajr2456 : 11/20/2017 10:21 am : link
I think enough teams will pass that he could be there with our second pick.

Aren't we out of the running for Saquan now that we're firmly at #3?

Not really. A team above us could take Nelson, Key, Chubb, James, Fitzpatrick, etc
I'd take Chubb, Nelson, James or Fitzpatrick
jeff57 : 11/20/2017 10:50 am : link
before Barkley.
If Chubb is the real deal,
Simms11 : 11/20/2017 12:07 pm : link
We could take him and I would be very happy too. We have Zero pass rush and we have two high-priced DEs. If we want to improve the D next year, we need a better pass rush and LBers.
If we use him the way he should be used,
Go Terps : 11/20/2017 12:15 pm : link
Jackson has the highest likelihood to be successful out of the gate, IMO.
I'd be happy with Darnold.
Dave in Buffalo : 11/20/2017 12:55 pm : link
Maybe Darnold isn't ready for Prime time, as Rosen appears to be. But he's young and appears to have the talent to be a very good qb in the pros. Ready for the pros or not, I'd take him. He'll sit and learn and be ready in a couple of years. Otherwise, trade up for Rosen. Mayfield makes me nervous.
There is not a can't miss prospect...
bw in dc : 11/20/2017 1:05 pm : link
But I think there is a pool of prospects who have significant upside, especially in the right environment.

And that will essentially mean nearly every team will need to consider drafting a QB in one of the three rounds this year.

Only slightly related to this
pjcas18 : 11/20/2017 1:12 pm : link
topic, but here's one obviously needing context data point on QB's and the draft:

How do you know that?
To the OP's question
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/20/2017 6:19 pm : link
obviously no one really knows. I think the last surefire #1 pick that everyone thought was a stud was Andrew Luck which hasn't really panned out. I don't think there's any consensus prospect in this year's draft.
Who knows

Outside of the injuries, I think Luck has been every bit the stud he was projected to be. You can't fault him for the lack of talent that surrounds him. He had the misfortune of being drafted by a poorly run organization.
Lamar Jackson > Josh Rosen
