Nice article on Wheeler and the OL

gmen4ever : 11/20/2017 11:05 am
If already posted I will delete. I liked how Wheeler played. He does have a little edge to him. I like the way he would follow the play, run down field after a big run and help up the RB. Reminded me of David Diehl or the Giants line from the 80s. He routinely would lightly push the defender out of the way when doing so (needs to be careful) but it showed he's not afraid to get a little scrappy. No idea how we will fair in the future, but I do like him at Tackle albeit the very little he has played thus far.

But let's wait and see. Only one game.
Agreed

As someone said on the game thread, if this is how an under sized Wheeler plays, sign me up!
Let's say we win a few more games

and end up with a pick in the 7-12 range. To me, Nelson from ND would be a great get in that range and would bring another piece to the OL that could replace Jerry immediately or Pugh if we decide to let him walk.

I am excited to see how Wheeler does

After an entire offseason in the strength and conditioning program with a year of experience under his belt.
I want him to play the rest of the season

Then use the off-season to get stronger. Doesn’t an ex nfler have a lineman camp?

LeCharles Bentley, i think.
Berhe or Gallman?

I thought the fake punt was snapped to Gallman?

The only OL under contract next year are Jerry, Flowers, Wheeler and Dunker. Way to go Reese nice planning.
Bentley's camp

It's good to hear about players working hard in the offseason, but Jerry and Richburg have both attended Bentley's camp at least last year, if not for a couple seasons.

You can bet Fluker will be brought back as will Jones. Both are playing very well.
Let's pump
ryanmkeane : 11/20/2017 11:51 am : link
the brakes a bit regarding Wheeler. He was an undrafted FA after all...not saying he can't be the answer at RT. But he had a solid game with help in his first start. Let's see what he's got the rest of the season to see if he can be a possible starting RT next year.
I like most of what I've seen from Wheeler . . . .
TC : 11/20/2017 11:53 am : link
for an UDFA rookie prospect. (Except watching him get schooled by an inside move.)

While watching him during the season I was surprised by his athleticism for a guy his size. (6'7") He's got really quick feet which he keeps moving, bends his knees naturally, has excellent flexibility and can move quickly. And as was pointed out, he plays with an edge and doesn't intimidated or over-awed by the level of competition.

But we've seen plenty of promising rookies who never progressed, or even regressed, so we'll need to wait to see what happens with Wheeler. But it looks like he may have the ability to become a good NFL OT.

I think they called originally to Gallman but corrected it to Berhe
regarding the contracts
gmen4ever : 11/20/2017 12:03 pm : link
I am not a fan of the one year "show me" contracts. I know they are intended to mitigate risk for the Team, but a multi year contract with our option to kick out if the player is not producing gives us the same reduced risk. Easy to say I know.

UDFA. Mostly because of attitude toward football and a little negative history IIRC.
Funny how 6-7, 315 is

now "undersized" for an NFL tackle. lol

That's what they did with Brandon Marshall. In all likelihood, the cost of his two-year deal will be $5,468,750 for 18 catches and 154 yards. That's about $304K per catch, around $35.5K per yard. Does anyone expect an additional return on that investment in 2018?
An

encouraging start, but as he himself admitted, he had help. That's fine, especially against a player as good as Houston. I also expect him to have some bumps going forward. We need to assess his whole body of work at the end of the season, but he acquitted himself well.

I think somebody said the Giants had an early day three grade on him, but he was a UDFA because of some character issues.

I am not sure how his contract was structured. Those numbers certainly do not justify the investment. Again, easy to say but had it been worded differently, to show a reduced value based on production or IR the risk would be lower. I must admit, when we signed him and I saw that it was a 2 year deal I was happy. We just need to balance the risk of losing a solid player, against the risk of over spending. If Fluker is a one year deal, then he'll likely be gone next year.
Another thing to keep in mind about Wheeler...
Big Blue Blogger : 11/20/2017 12:22 pm : link
...is that he went into the draft with significant durability concerns. While we can hope the injury issues are behind him, and that he will enjoy a long, healthy career, there are good reasons a major-college LT with NFL feet went undrafted.

Actually, I think the thing that was "undersized" was the number of 225 lb. reps he did at the combine
Fluker
giants#1 : 11/20/2017 12:51 pm : link
I don't expect Fluker to get a big contract this offseason. While he's been an improvement, particularly in the running game, John Jerry was awful at RG which likely influences our perception of how well Fluker has played. He's likely an average at best RG and would be the weak link on a "good" OL.

Yea, he’s a big guy, but needs to add muscle. That’s what he’s lacking. His technique looks sound, but with experience under his belt and a weight program, he could definitely fit the bill. Let’s just hope he continues this play for the last 6 games, then we can all talk.

He's not Marshall Yanda but the run game improved when he started playing. I think its an indictment of the coaching staff that Hart played over these guys. Not to mention Perkins....
understrength is more accurate for Wheeler

as it is for most young men when they hit the NFL. He looks like he belongs, now root him on to keep Hart on the bench.
Hart really struggled

It should not have taken as long as it did to give Wheeler a shot.
Wheeler credited himself being an avid surfer
giant24 : 11/20/2017 3:17 pm : link
is why he has good balance and fast feet. Could you imagine that monster coming at you on a surf board! Yikes!

That is a good point, especially with the poor play of the OL overall!

It strikes me that Wheeler would be the clear choice over Hart when the Giants face a 3-4, as he has better quickness to deal with an OLB and strength is not quite as important.

#1) Wheeler was new and under strength so he did not know the plays earlier in the season and maybe not until recently did he become comfortable with the plays,

#2) Hart knew the system and while not good against speed rushers was ok against normal DEs.

#3) Wheeler likely has gained significant strength since July and Hart has a badly sprained ankle.

#4) Wheeler looks much quicker and has better feet than Hart, not debatable.

#5) Until Pugh's back gave out he was the RT and may be again once his back gets better.

Therefore, Wheeler was probably not a viable option until recently.

Could be, he looked very comfortable and well prepared in pass pro, appears he can cover more ground laterally than Hart.
I've read about RT not being his normal position.
TC : 11/20/2017 5:51 pm : link
Is it LT, because he looks like he could develop into it? If he is a fast enough learner, it might be interesting to see him compete with Flowers. And even if he just gets a back up role, it might be nice to have him be able to back up both tackle spots.

And while I hope and expect there to be additional OL help next season, an eventual roster of Wheeler, Flowers, Jones (Or a replacement.) Fluker and Pugh wouldn't be the worst thing I could imagine, and might actually be not bad.

And while Jones is undersized, I can't see any point in paying Richburg much to stick around when little to nothing was lost when Jones came in. It really shouldn't be that hard to replace either one.
