They now have 4- likely go to Abreu, Torres, Estrada and Acevedo. However, they likely want to protect Jose Mesa Jr., McKinney and possibly Johnathan Loaisiga. They need least 3 more spots- possibly one or two more to be safe. So let's say 3-5 spots more.
I think they can safely waive Garrett Cooper. I think he would go unclaimed- but the Yanks would not lose him. They could then outright him to AAA, and he cannot refuse the assignment because he does not have enough ML service time.
I think they will try to trade Jake Cave before 8 PM tonight. They have a LOT of OF, but they don't want to lose an upper level guy for nothing. If they keep Cave, it MIGHT mean they have to leave McKinney unprotected.
I think Caleb Smith, Bryan Mitchell and Gio Gallegos have to be concerned about whether they get moved today.
Herrera had quite a good year last year. I can understand
Yup, that brings them up to what the Rangers have, if I'm not mistaken. And if Atlanta's big guys are set free, you've gotta think that the Yanks would be in on them if Ohtani doesn't come to them.
"as expected, the Yankees added top prospect SS Gleyber Torres to the 40-man. Also added were RHP Albert Abreu, RHP Domingo Acevedo, IF Thairo Estrada, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga, and OF Billy McKinney. The 40-man roster is now completely full."
Really surprised the Yanks left Jose Mesa Jr. unprotected
He has REALLY good stuff- and demonstrated down the stretch that he might be a SP. His only weakness is command.
I think with his high 90's stuff and AA experience, not only is he VERY likely to get picked in Rule 5, but is also very likely to stick with that team at least as a reliever- but possibly a SP.
"Among the notable prospects the Yankees are leaving exposed to the Rule 5 Draft are IF Abi Avelino, LHP Nestor Cortes, OF Rashad Crawford, RHP J.P. Feyereisen, 1B Mike Ford, RHP Anyelo Gomez, RHP Brady Lail, OF Alex Palma, and LHP Stephen Tarpley. I suspect Cortes and Gomez will get selected in the Rule 5 Draft. Feyereisen and Tarpley are candidates to get picked."
I guess that it's the cost of having such a great system

Its a gamble. Any team taking him would have to put him on their 40-man roster and keep him there the entire year; or send him back to the yanks. He may not yet be worthy of a 40-man spot.
didn't have to waive anyone, picked up a few more pieces, got the guys they really wanted onto the 40-man. I guess we'll see who gets taken in the Rule 5 draft - it is on December 14.

No 25 man roster all year. So he has to be on the pro team.

They'd have to keep him on the 25 man all year, not the 40.
dammit, I should read to the end before I chime in.
to the Marlins for a pitcher and INT signing $. Link - ( New Window )
Oh well. Our household will always have a soft spot for Caleb Smith- he tossed a ball to my daughter during BP at one of the Citi games this year vs. Tampa.
RE: dammit, I should read to the end before I chime in.
plus, it doesn't hurt to remind people about the rule. 3 out of 4 of last year's Rule 5 draftees came back to the Yanks as they couldn't stick on the other team's 25-man roster for the full year.
I figure they want to protect: Acevado, Abreu, Torres, Estrada...maybe Mckinney? So 1 more IMO.

But really not a needed guy for us, with Austin (and even Headley) able to back up Bird at 1B.

Mmmm. Lasagna.

Yes. Also recall, three of the four taken last year returned to the Yanks. We ended up only losing Torrens to Rule 5.

No, it is like reporters confirming with two sources...redundancy is not always a bad thing.
