NFT: 'What Made Maddy Run'

Anyone read this? It's a book about Madison 'Maddy' Holleran, a track freshman at Penn, & the months & days leading to her jumping off a bridge to her death in Philly in January 2014. It was written by Kate Fagan, an ESPN writer who occasionally is on 'Around the Horn'. Holleran was from NJ so I'm sure some Jersey BBIers might be familiar with her story.

I thought it was a tremendous if obviously not heartbreaking read. While I can't necessarily relate to her life events (I didn't go to an Ivy league school or play college sports), the overarching themes were ones that I believe we all know & face: the day to day stress of work/life (in her case, track & doing well in school), the image we present of ourselves to the world via Facebook, Instagram, etc. is often not based in reality, & that we as a society still have a negative stigma towards quitting, that it's weak & unmanly, if you will.

Anyways, just curious to the thoughts of others who have read this book. Again, I thought it was a really interesting & quick read. I finished it while waiting in the airport/on the plane earlier today.

I haven't read it, but I am very interested. I have a similar personal experience with a close relative, from what you describe about Maddy Holeran.

Gregorio, I can't recommend it enough. A college buddy of mine committed suicide two years ago & I racked my brain for weeks trying to see if there were signs I missed or just ignored.
Thanks SF,

The book but pulled this article which includes her suicide note. Unfortunately, a lot of freshmen have trouble with the elevated pressure competition and expectations not to mention loss of support, new freedoms and temptations that come with it. Very sad story and eye opening that every 15 seconds someone will take their own life.
