NFT: Yanks- Arizona Fall League Wrap-Up...

BC Eagles94 : 11/21/2017 10:19 am
Season ended late last week, and figured it would be a good time to review how the Yanks kids did...particularly with roster now set for rule 5 yesterday. I'm sure there are other Yankee nuts like e that followed the box scores every night, but I think most Yanks fans didn't. So here goes...

--SS Thairo Estarda: 2nd on team in AVG (.342), 3rd on team with OBP (.381), 5th on team in SLG (.430), 2nd on team with TB (34), and 3rd on team with runs (13). Not sure how he looked defensively but he played SS primarily and had 2 errors in 20 games.
*Easy to see why Yanks added him to 40 man. He is coming off a year where he hit over .300 in AA at only 21 years old as a middle infielder playing SS primarily. A lot to like with this kid.

--CF Estevan Florial: 7th on team in AVG (.286), 2nd on team in OBP (.383), 9th on team in SLG (.414), 1st on team with 2B's (5), 2nd on team with 3B's (2),2nd on team with runs (14), and 2nd on team with K's (29).
*Our bar-none #2 hitting prospect behind Torres. Mashed in low A and high A this year at only 19 years old and playing CF no less. And he continued to do very well playing against the best competition for him yet. Didn't have to be put on 40 man yet, and still a couple years away. One gripe is he has to cut down on his K's.

--OF/1B Billy McKinney: 8th on team in AVG (.279), 4th on team in OBP (.373), 6th on team in SLG (.426), 1st on team with 2B's (5), and 1st on team with RBI's (20).
*Also added to 40 man yesterday. He is a former 1st round pick and top prospect for A's and Cubs. Prospect status fell last couple years before ascending again this past year as he mashed in AAA and is still only 23 with a sweet lefty swing. An OF, he played 1B all fall, and while I don;t know exactly how he looked he only had one error in 19 games there. Adding 1B his ability as a corner OF will only enhance his ability to get up to the Yanks and add value. He is the younger, higher ceiling, lefty version of Tyler Austin at this point.

--SS/2B Kyle Holder: 3rd on team with AVG (.333), 6th on team in OBP (.367), 2nd on team in SLG (.511).
*The biggest surprise of our hitters, as he hasn't shown that much at plate yet in the minors and is much more well known for his glove at short. His sample size was the smallest though of only 11 games. Our other 3 all led players with 19/20 games. He played mostly 2B although has been mostly a SS in minors. Also wasn't required yet for 40 man. 23 years old now and had an average season at high A, not a big-time prospect in my book. But due to his glove a lot of people still really like him.

--SP Albert Abreu: 1st on team with IP (27.2) with 1.27 WHIP, 23 K's and 2.60 ERA over 6 starts. Only 21 hits but 14 BB's.
*Just added to 40 man as he is one of our highest regarded pitching prospects (acquired in McCann trade last off season). Just turned 22. Righty who has a solid season last year albeit with injuries and some control issues, that carried over to fall league.

--SP Justus Sheffield: 4th on team with IP (20.1), would have pitched few more innings but last start cut short due to getting hit by a comebacker. 0.84 WHIP, 22 K's, and 3.10 ERA. Only 3 BB's and 14 hits.
*Our top pitching prospect, a 21 year old lefty that did very well in AA last year before an injury cut his season short. Not eligible to have to be protected on 40 man yet.

--RP Cody Carroll: 1st on team with 0.00 ERA and 0.60 WHIP in 11.2 IP along with 18 K's.
*Really dominated fall league, but he did just turn 25 and is a former college pitcher. Big righty who had a very good year at high A and AA. Another guy who wasn't needed to be protected on 40 ma yet. Fringy relief prospect due to his age IMO. But is certainly climbing after this season, and then fall league dominance.

--RP Andrew Schwaab: I had never heard of him and he was one of worst pitchers on the team in fall league. And he is already 24 and a former college pitcher. Not wasting my time writing him up anymore than that.
Thanks, very nice

one thing about holder

I've heard he would be a top 3 defensive SS right now in the majors. Kid can play defense so any hit tools and hes gonna be in the bigs.

On a FA note

Yanks trade with Miami gives them 250,000 more for Otani. We now have the same amount of international BP money as Tex. SO I think it will come down to Matsui and Tanaka luring him to us.
The future's so bright

I gotta wear pinstriped shades!

Thanks for the rundown. Good stuff.
Holder had a kind of odd season at the plate

Got off to a horrific start in April but improved his numbers every month, and was hitting well by the end of the season. He has absolutely no power, but he was making good contact. Don't need much offense with a glove like his.
Another managerial candidate throws his hat in the ring....

The Yankees are still looking for a new manager and the Sports Pope believes he's qualified.

On his Monday show, WFAN host Mike Francesa said he feels he has what it takes to be the manager of the Yankees after being asked if he'd ever take the job if offered.

"Do I think I can manage the Yankees? Sure, but I'm not gonna get a chance to manage the Yankees," Francesa said to a caller in audio captured by Twitter user Funhouse.

Wonder when the official words comes down on Ohtani. I really have a hard time thinking he wouldn't choose Yanks with all the factors. Most money to offer, Yanks history and reputation, DH in AL, Tanaka on staff, Matsui on payroll. Only drawback is distance from Japan. But LA and Giants are NL with no money to offer. No way he goes to rebuilding Padres or A's. Maybe Mariners are a darkhorse. Who knows. I just can't see Rangers matching up to Yanks with a guy from Japan when the money is equal.
there is a lot

good to hear about Holder

He was 271/317 in high A this season - better than some projected for him. Facing this higher level of competition without getting embarrassed is a good sign. I love to watch a really good fielder and I'm hoping the other young infielders coming up will hit well enough to allow the Yanks to fit a potential gold glove guy into the lineup in a couple years.
Thank you

This way of building a team is so much more interesting and fun for those fans that are invested and follow at this depth
