NGT: Greg UVA might have a shot this year

BigBlueDownTheShore : 11/21/2017 2:13 pm
The Hokies have a banged up secondary, and stopping that spread attack is going to be tough.
Yeah, we've had a shot several years
Greg from LI : 11/21/2017 2:24 pm : link
2015 - had 20-13 lead in the 4th, lost 23-20
2014 - 20-17 lead with 3 minutes to go, lost 24-17
2012 - 14-7 lead in the third quarter, lost 17-14
2008 - 14-7 halftime lead, lost 17-14

I'll get excited when there's no time on the clock and we still lead. Till then, I expect nothing.
What's the best UVA

win you have seen over the Hokies Greg?
because honestly last years drubbing of

UVA has got to be my all time favorite.

Second favorite, was 2004 when both teams were respectable. Jimmy Williams chased your RB down at like the 10 limiting UVA to 3 points, when it looked like they were going get 7 for sure. I think the final score was 17 to 10.
It's not as if I have many to choose from

Six wins since I started following Virginia football in 1990. 5-4 in the first nine, 1-17 since.

The 1998 comeback in Blacksburg was epic. We looked so, so bad in the first half, and then it was as if a completely different team showed up for the second half. Brooks threw for like 250 yards and three touchdowns after halftime and the defense, which was excellent that year, came to life after a crappy early performance. Byron Thweatt had a pick six, which was cool because that punk punter of yours, Kibble, had tried to start a fight with him earlier in the game.

2003 was great because we had lost four straight and Schaub and Miller just dominated. Schaub passed for close to 400 yards and Miller caught 11 balls and a TD.

And that's it. 1995 was a particularly bitter loss because we were the better team and flat out gave that game away. 2002 was a big letdown because we had just blown out Maryland, who were ranked at the time, and you had lost 2 in a row coming in. Most of the time we simply were not a good team and never had a chance.
Seems like we can have a civil conversation

every once and a while.

What is the story behind why you hate the Hokies so much? I'm sure you realize there are some good people in their fan base.
Well, losing 17 of 18 helps

Then there was this from 2007. Remember?

[quote]
Just when Virginia football fans were starting to get over the "Hokie lovefest" in the regular season-ending Virginia Tech game at Scott Stadium, they were reminded of the whole scenario by the "Hokie flyover" at the Gator Bowl.

Prior to UVa's bowl game against Texas Tech on New Year's Day, an airplane flew over Jacksonville Municipal Stadium with a banner attached that read: "WE HOKIES HAVE ACC + BCS ... U HAVE VA PRIDE."

Cavalier fans were already steamed over what many of them perceived as an excessive show of unity between the two football rivals prior to their annual clash on Nov. 24, won by Virginia Tech, 33-21. With the win, the Hokies won the Coastal Divison title and a spot in the ACC Championship game, where they defeated Boston College. They went on to lose to Kansas in the Orange Bowl.

Littlepage turned that game into a de-facto Tech home game out of sensitivity after the shootings, we proceed to lose, and then some Tech fan or fans actually spends a fair amount of money to have a plane fly over our bowl game with a banner mocking us? Class all the way.

There's also the fact that you've had more than a few extremely hateable players like the Vicks and Me-Lo Hall. There's the dipshit car keys. The delusions of grandeur that you're some kind of elite program when you get waxed every time you play an actual elite team. The fact that you get mostly dominated in every other sport but since half of your fans cheer for other schools in those sports anyway, it barely matters. (eg - the hordes of Hokie football/Tar Heel basketball fans)/ Etc, etc.

The losing streak amplifies all that. It's a lot easy to shrug things like that off when you win at least occasionally. Once we win one, a lot of the hatred will simmer down.
I don’t think I ever told you this
BigBlueDownTheShore : 11/21/2017 8:23 pm : link
But I know the person who put the T on UVA Field.
Let’s Go Hokies!

(Sorry, I couldn’t resist ambushing your conversation.)
If UVA can get over that...

bitter defeat to the U then I like their chances. That was a tough beat. They caught U at the right time after the emotional win over ND. And they should have been up much bigger at certain points as they were in control and marching to a great win...

It’s all about Benkert. If he plays well, and can show that 2nd or 3rd round talent that’s he got, then this is the time to end this VT dominance.
For reference
BigBlueDownTheShore : 11/22/2017 8:45 am : link
Yes, I remember
Greg from LI : 11/22/2017 9:40 am : link
I also remember when a bunch of them painted Ts on the big painted Vs on the street by the Corner. That was in 1996 I think? Very clever.

Benkert has the physical ability to play in the NFL, but he's so maddeningly inconsistent. He has GOT to stop staring down receivers. He does it all the time and it's led to several pick-6s, including against Miami.

He's also gets fairly panicky when blitzed, which is rather a problem against Pud's defense. If they can give him time, he could carve up Tek's secondary, but with our weak OL I can't say I'm confident. I can see this being similar to the Louisville game. UL doesn't have a good defense, but they do have quick guys in the front 7. They blitzed the shit out of KB all game long and brought a ton of pressure, which protected their crappy DBs. It was pretty much the standard Pud gameplan, only with lesser defensive talent, and it was very effective.
Greg did you hear about UVA's

motivator this year? Miami has the chain, Tech has the lunch pail,... UVA has toast in the toaster?
Toast is the Answer - ( New Window )
Bronco is an odd duck
Greg from LI : 11/22/2017 10:39 am : link
But if he makes them a consistent winner, I won't care.

Mormons are weird people man. I worked with a few out in LA.
Weird, but almost pathologically nice
Greg from LI : 11/22/2017 11:02 am : link
One of my neighbors is Mormon. Couldn't ask for a better neighbor - I asked to borrow his ladder once to clean my gutters, said I'd come by to get it the next day. Before I could do it, he had actually come over and cleaned them out for me. Seriously!

Yes, but the women are seriously abused. The niceness covers the crap they do behind closed doors. I worked with the brainwashed wives. Also don't forget about their magic underwear that they wear.
Virginia actually voted VT into the ACC
dpinzow : 11/22/2017 1:35 pm : link
The ACC originally wanted Syracuse almost 15 years ago but Duke, UNC and Virginia kept on voting against Syracuse. So VT was the next choice, and Virginia voted for Tech. Of course, Syracuse got into the ACC later

Well, Syracuse originally was in the trio with BC and Miami to jump ship from the Big East. But Boeheim flexed his muscle and said Cuse shouldn't leave. So there may have been some backlash there...
Mark fucking Warner forced that
Greg from LI : 11/22/2017 8:34 pm : link
He's the reason we have to share a conference with Cousin Eddie.
