NFT: DNA testing, anybody here tried it?

MadMax : 11/21/2017 5:35 pm
I'm thinking about using MyHeritage DNA for this but also considering 23 and Me or Ancestry.com.

Any feedback/experiences with this would be greatly appreciated.
Too easy for a joke

Well, to tell the family secret,

my grandmother was Dutch
I used heritage.

Very happy with the results.

Probably the same with all, but it gives you regions on continents. Pretty cool, if indeed legit (I lean toward being a skeptic). Hard to quibble but I did wish it could have pinpointed a bit more. But still, pretty focused on given areas of origin. If nothing else, it’s entertaining. I haven’t tried to connect with distant relatives, but apparently that’s an option. Not really interested. lol
At least six people here...

tried and failed. You know who they are.
My brother did it

It was pretty cool how they give you a book that describes all your bloodlines. We never realized how much German we had in our family since my mother was adopted.

One funny part was it gives you a % of how much neanderthal you have. Avg is 3% my brothers measured 10%
23andme has ancestry-only kits for $50 right now

my wife and I used ancestry.com's... it was OK. Skimming over the results was fun for about half an hour.

Cool thing was downloading the raw DNA and using promethease.com
Yes and I have some expertise in this. Can we PM on this site?

ha, I was just looking at this for Christmas gifts

Good to have BBI's opinion on them

23 and you is on sale for $50 if you buy 2 or more, MyHeritage is also on sale for $50. Ancestry, com is $79 with each additional one after that for $69 each.

I was kind of leaning towards the AncestryDNA one just because they have the big network. But thinking about getting 4 or them so at $50 each is looking pretty attractive.

Do anyone think that AncestryDNA is worth the extra money???

one thing I left out is AncestryDNA identifies possible family members... most are "4th Cousins", but it identified a 2nd cousin with strong confidence
That DNA testing thing...

is something I'd probably try.

Did Ancestry. The family connection proved it to be valid as my brother did it year later and got added to my family connections as a close family/sibling.

I've actually traced one family branch back to the 1500's.
Thanks for the feedback everyone,

even the clowns! (Ok, I could have phrased the question better!)

J, the promethease.com link seems to be very interesting.

My wife and I used 23 & Me
Montreal Man : 11/23/2017 9:12 am : link
Happy with the results. Very informative about people connections and info about the stats about some of your genes. They e-mail you questions about your health, which they put in a data base.

But the BIG news is that my younger brother has a daughter he never knew about. They've gotten together, we've met, great family, great grandkids and, for me, nephews.

Turns out she was someone he knew when he was early in college or late high school.

Now THAT was a great revelation.
For 23 and Me
eclipz928 : 11/23/2017 9:19 am : link
After you sent in the sample how long did it take you to get the results back?
Not sure, but maybe a couple of weeks.
Montreal Man : 11/23/2017 9:37 am : link
But don't hold me to it because we weren't counting the days. It didn't take long, though.
i read an article recently
Les in TO : 11/23/2017 9:38 am : link
that showed outraged posts by white supremacists on a 23 and me forum who compained that the tests showed they had a trace amount (less than 1%) of Asian, African American or Jewish DNA. they suspected that 23 and me was a Zionist/globailist conspiracy to promote multiculturalism and tolerance and reduce antisemitsm. so if 23 and me pisses off the likes of the KKK, I fully support that business!
Neanderthal
Montreal Man : 11/23/2017 9:56 am : link
According to 23 & Me, we ALL have a smidge of neanderthal. Everyone I've talked to got that in their report, too.
I did ancestry and found out that I am 93% Ashkenazi Jewish.
Elisha10 : 11/23/2017 10:25 am : link
Before this test I was always under the impression that I was part Polish, German, Russian/Eastern European, etc, and Judaism was my religion. I would be very interested to see the results for Sephardic and Middle Eastern Jewish populations, but don't happen to know anyone from the those backgrounds.
