Shohei Ohtani’s path to MLB cleared after new posting agreement is reached before the deadline. The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports this agreement will last for three years, and will be ratified by the owners in 10 days. That means Ohtani can be posted by NPB as early as the end of next week. That means it’s time to get excited about Ohtani free agency for real. It’s time! The new agreement, the rules of which will go into effect next offseason, will grant Japanese teams 20 percent of a player’s contract if they sign a deal for less than $25 million. That includes Ohtani’s upcoming contract since he isn’t eligible for free agency this years. If the contract is worth $25-50 million, that percentage drops to 17.5 percent, and if it’s between $50-100 million it goes down to 15 percent. That addition to the agreement was a major negotiating point for NPB, as they have argued teams should get money beyond the posting amount as a way to more fully compensate teams that are losing one of their top players to MLB. |
Not to mention a young, rising team with deep pockets.

But I didn't want to come off as too much of a homer! 75% is very high, but I do think it is really over 50%. When the Yanks can offer you more money than anyone else (same as Texas), DH at-bats (that half the teams can't), a fellow Jap in the rotation, the city of New York, and the history and prestige of the Yanks...how do you choose someone else?

Yup, very good point. Selling the old, descending teams of recent years...wouold have been a tougher sell even with all the other "pro's." But the direction of the tea for next several years, pretty much makes it a no-brainer. Unless he simply just does not want to be in NY. Because nobody else is offering what Yanks are.
--DH
--The massively talented team with the upbeat reputation he would join here.
--Big-city coastal team with dozens of Japanese sports reporters.
--Hideki already said he would help recruit. He has a very upbeat story to tell.
In a DH-less world, the Dodgers would probably be the top competition. But DH probably matters, a lot. I would not be shocked if we lose, but I would be surprised/disappointed.
Consider this: we are already top two in minor league prospects. Add probably the #1 prospect to that, and we become the dominant #1.
.
Ha...where did that stupid report come from again?? I'm a Yanks fan that also roots for the Mets. But that was just silly.
Or better yet, show him around the private Japanese clubs in NY that rumor has it Hideki enjoyed regularly

So I wouldn't be too confident about getting Ohtani, Yankees fans.

It was a quote by Syndergaard early in the season.
I will buy him a Switch if he comes to New York.
On second thought, I don't want to get banned from baseball like Atlanta's GM, so we will have to stick to Matsui's porn.
The posting system was changed a few years ago. Now there is a $20 million posting fee cap. No team can bid over $20 million. If multiple teams bid the $20 million then those teams have the right to negotiate with the player.
Yanks have $3.75 mill to Rangers $3.55 mill. What happens after this year as far as contract?
Don't forget the signing of Kei Igawa, Cashman's response to losing out on Dice K!
Why only 50%? Yanks are a better organization than Texas. Rangers no longer have Darvish to help lure him. Yanks have Matsui AND Tanaka. Both are very respected in Japan. Yanks have equal money to offer. Yanks are also trending up while Tex floating (IMHO).

I'm a Yanks homer, but I have to think we have best shot at him and that him signing with Yanks is around 50%.

I would be surprised if he doesn't sign with the Yankees. It's obviously not about money as he would have waited another year if it was.
Also, if we can’t pay him, what city do you suppose garners the most ad. Dollars?
Sad!
Sad!
It's sad but consider the poster.

but I try to keep in mind guys like Irabu, who failed after so much was made of them beforehand.
