Gettleman was fired from Carolina after doing a very bad job. He ignored addressing the offensive line. If Reese is fired then I would like to see them go after Elliot Wolf or Decosta.
In interviews with more than a dozen team and league sources, the Observer learned that Gettleman’s brusque management style – which had made him unpopular with some Carolina players from his earliest days as GM – had begun to wear thin throughout the organization. Link - ( New Window )
the Raiders Director of Player Personnel. They have done a formidable job of turning that dumpster fire around, just the sort of experience required here.
They've also found some terrific offensive linemen...

Sorry DeCosta isn't leaving Baltimore
I know it's highly unlikely but he might be growing tired of waiting for Newsome to retire and he could be willing to consider working for a great organization like the Giants who are likely to have a top 3 pick.

Isn't he basically just a cap guy? I'd be leery of handing over the reins to a quant guy - feels a little like Idzik. I would hope that whoever is GM retains Abrams though because I think he's very good at his job.
Uh, Gettleman lost out to Reese for the Giants GM position when Accorsi retired.
To recap, the Giants originally went after Pioli for the GM job (or at least an interview, which they didn't get according to the linked article). When they couldn't get Pioli, I believe it came down to either Reese or Gettleman.
There was a video interview, that I cannot find, where John Mara was sitting with Jerry Reese. During the interview, John Mara stated "it was close" when asked about the decision to go with Reese over Gettleman.
This is an article I found when Reese became GM in 2007. It doesn't have the quote that I was looking for, however. Reese Reaches Top - ( New Window )
did a decent job in Carolina, but it is tough to evaluate his moves. His major transactions were letting go of veterans to try and get back cap $$'s his predecessor wasted.
Moving guys like Steve Smith and Josh Norman for either salary reasons or attitude reasons was fine, but when he was looking to see what guys like Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen would get in trade returns, his pissed Jerry Richardson off because those are his two favorite players. He also let DeAngelo Williams go and tried to move Jonathon Stewart.
All of those moves may have been good ones to explore, but the owner didn't like it, so they talked about his poor interpersonal skills and brusque behavior.
Interestingly enough, when he was hired, they praised his no-nonsense approach and his insistence that part of the GM's job is to make tough decisions. Then they used that same supposed positive against him as a negative.
How many times can you think of where a team fires their GM Â

I think Gettleman did a good job filling in behind a good core and in retaining Rivera. I like him a lot.
With that said, I'd argue Reese did a better job of filling in behind the core pieces when he first started as well.
I don't see Gettleman as the answer - I want someone who can serve a decade+ in that role. I'm willing to go more short-term with the HC.
I also don't think it's a certainty Reese goes. We'll see.
RE: RE: Interesting didn't know he was quite that old Â
Filling Reese's seat will be a very important task, especially with our ownerships commitment to patience and continuity
How did he do a great job in Carolina?
He did part of a great job. He got them out of cap hell while remaining competitive. Then he pushed the cap savings too far and the replacement talent didn't fire (although some of them have started to play better as this season has went on)
The Giants almost always look to hire internally, or at least hire guys who used to work for them. I'd rather they bring in someone with an entirely new perspective.

Agree, unless the guy's initials are BB and that is not happening

Remind me again of all the talent the Packers have? Because outside of Rodgers, the cupboard seems bare. Thats why I say no to Wolf.

If not, what is his other accomplishment?

Agreed. That'd be one guy on my shortlist.

Eric DeCosta is in Baltimore and has been there in role since 2007. He is legit. Has a process and a system.
John Dorsey is a name to keep an eye on. He lost a power struggle with Andy Reid, but that seems to be a common thread with Reid

That has to stick to Gettleman at least a little.

Exactly. Packers are wasting Aaron Rodgers.

is who i want as our next GM if Reese is fired.
