NFL

Benoit MMQB: Thanksgiving Football: Everything You Need to Know About the Three NFL Matchups
“N.Y. GIANTS AT WASHINGTON
New York Offense vs. Washington Defense
A defense must have a plan for tight end Evan Engram. He’s the only Giants skill player who can hurt you from anywhere in the formation. Safety D.J. Swearinger has often been Washington’s tight end matchup piece in man coverage. Swearinger has had a nice season, but he’s not quite twitchy enough to contend with a wide receiver-caliber athlete like Engram. Perhaps that’s part of the reason Washington’s foundation is zone coverage.
Often, your zone coverage is only as good as your pass rush. Washington’s has been inconsistent, and in Ben McAdoo’s scheme, Eli Manning gets the ball out quickly. That’s tough on a defense; in the very least, blitzing becomes pointless. Washington’s best pass rushers are edge men Ryan Kerrigan and Junior Galette, but with the quick-timed passing game, your interior defensive linemen become key. That’s also true against the Giants’ ground game, which is built on inside zone runs, usually from shotgun. This game could come down to the performance of Washington defensive tackles Stacy McGee, Matt Ioannidis, Ziggy Hood, Terrell McClain and Anthony Lanier.
Washington Offense vs. New York Defense
With running back Chris Thompson breaking his leg against the Saints and tight end Jordan Reed once again battling injuries for much of a season, Washington’s wide receivers must finally step up and play. The team appears to have given up on Terrelle Pryor, who is now out with an ankle injury anyway. Last year’s first-round pick, Josh Doctson, has lately seen an expanded role and must quickly develop into a No. 1 receiver—easy to say, hard to do, especially midseason, and even more especially when you’re facing cover artists like Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple. Both corners have had disappointing seasons, but they’re still talented.
Besides playing well at outside receiver, Washington must exploit New York’s depleted linebacking corps. Thompson would have been a wonderful weapon here. With him gone, expect Jay Gruden to pound the rock with third-stringer-turned-starter Samaje Perine. In that case, the game comes down to strength on strength: Washington’s big, athletic offensive line against Damon Harrison and Olivier Vernon, as well as defensive tackles Jay Bromley and Dalvin Tomlinson, who had their best performances of 2017 last Sunday against the Chiefs.
Prediction: Washington 20, Giants 17”

3. New York Giants
Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma. I'm not convinced the Giants are ready to move on from Eli Manning. Because of that thought, in this mock, New York addresses the offensive tackle spot with Brown, the enormous but athletic left tackle from Oklahoma. He'll immediately help the Giants run game and serve as a quality pass-protector.

Giants on 11-23

11-23-1930 Giants 13 Green Bay 6

Benny Friedman 22 yard passing TD; 3 yard rushing TD; XP

“It isn't often that a fighting team bites the dust but that's just what happened here at the Polo Grounds when Benny Friedman's New York Giants, augmented by Red Cagle, formerly of West Point, nosed out the Green Bay Packers by the score of 13 to 6 in a thrilling combat before a crowd of some 37,000 wild spectators, who nearly went crazy as the cowhide was grilled up and down the chalk marked field. This was the largest turnout that has witnessed a pro football game since Red Grange joined the Bears back in 1925, fresh from Illinois, and played here in Gotham. Some of the veteran New York scribes ran out of adjectives trying to describe the exhibition. They all agreed that it was the greatest football game they ever witnesses and what's more added they had some doubts if the better team won. However, in football, touchdowns and goal kicks decide the winner instead of first downs and  penalty yardage. Record show that the Packers came through with fifteen first downs to the Giants' nine, while the Bays were penalized some 72 yards while the New York gridders only lost ten.”

11-23-1941 Giants 20 Washington 13

George Franck rushing TD’s of 3, 7 yards; Ward Cuff 38 yard FG; XP (2)

Giants' Ten Points in 55 Seconds Defeat Redskins, 20-13, to Win Eastern Division

“The Polo Grounds clock showed less than five minutes, the scoreboard read Washington 13, New York 10, the Giants were temporarily halted with fourth down and three on the Redskin 30-yard line when they packed ten points in to the next minute, one the Redskins will never forget.
Ward Cuff, who has beaten the Redskins before with his expert field goal kicking, stepped back to the 38-yard line and with Tuffy Leemans holding booted the muddy ball high and true through the posts for a three-pointer and that made it 13-all, with the Giants virtually home with a tie.
Poole Intercepts
Cuff lofted the ensuing kickoff into the end zone for a touchback and now it was up to the Redskins, needing a touchdown and possessing the ball on their own 20-yard line. Sammy Baugh stepped back for a short pass, let it go for what would have been a first down gain but suddenly a figure in blue, big Jim Poole, the two-time all-league end, stepped in front and made his way back to the Redskin 7-yard line with an interception, before Seymour knocked him out of bounds.
On the first play from scrimmage George Franck, Minnesota's all-American of last year who came into ins own last week as a pro star, darted, around left end on a naked reverse and with an unbelievable burst of speed in the thick mud sped to a touchdown. Cuff converted and barring a miracle the best the Redskins could get was tie.
The Redskins went out for a tie, Baugh heaving first down and would-be-touchdown passes in the gloom of the rapidly approaching dusk and fading minutes of the ball game but the Giants finally took over on their own35 and had time for a play before the timer's gun barked the end of the Redskin hopes.”

11-23-1947 Giants 24 Green Bay 24

Paul Governali TD passes of 15, 7 yards; Ken Strong XP(3); 27 yard FG

“The Green Bay Packers, who have spent recent Sunday learning how opponents can come from behind to win football games, tried the same trick in the Polo Grounds here Sunday, but had to settle for a 24-24 tie with the New York Giants. There was no special glory in it, however, for the Giants have the league's worst record and yet looked better than the Packers virtually all the way. Green Bay was lethargic and at times disinterested. The principal beneficiary of that attitude was Paul Governali, midseason acquisition of the Giants and hero of the Bronx. A "Governali day" helped bring the crowd to 27,939 paid attendance, and the Packers helped Governali look good. When he wasn't finding receivers for his accurate passes, the former Columbia star frequently eluded Packer defenders to run with the ball.”

Giants Rip 'Skins In 30-0 Onslaught Summeral's Talented Toe Does Trick Alone

“Veteran Charlie Conerly passed for two touchdowns and placement specialist Pat Summerall booted three field goals as the New York Giants rolled over the Washington Redskins. 30 to 0. today to remain within one game of the Eastern Conference leading Cleveland Browns. A Yankee Stadium crowd of 46,752 saw the Giants handcuff Washington's passing pair of Eddie Lebaron and Ralph Guglielmi to post their first shutout of the National Football League campaign. The Giants tallied in every period as they registered their sixth triumph against three defeats. The loss was Washington's sixth in nine games.

THE GIANTS, thanks to Summerall's accurate right toe, built up a 9 to 0 lead before they crossed Washington's goal line, late in the second period. The touchdown resulted from a ten-yard Conerly pass to Ken McAfee into the end zone, climaxing a 95-yard march. Summerall's first of three conversions put the game on ice. 16 to 0. The Giants' last two touchdowns were scored by Frank Gifford and Bob Schnelker. Gifford caught a 13-yard pass scoring by Conerly in the third period and Schnelker grabbed a four-yarder from Don Heinrich in the fourth quarter. The Giants outgained the Redskins 359 yards to 215. More important, they held Lebaron, the league's leading passer, and Guglielmi, his replacement, to only 90 yards in the air. Lebaron, who had completed better than 55 percent of his passes previous to today's encounter, was able to complete only three of eight passes for 21 yards. He gave way midway in the second period to Guglielmi, who did little better. Guglielmi threw 24 times and completed eight of 24 for only 69 yards. Each had one pass intercepted. CONERLY, on the other hand, connected with nine of 14 passes, good for 154 yards and two scores. Heinrich, who gave way to Conerly in the second period and returned in the last quarter when Chuck suffered a minor injury, hit with four of seven passes for 29 yards and a T. D. The Giant defense also did a workmanlike job on the Redskin runners, holding them to 125 yards. Of these, Guglielmi and Lebaron, accounted for 53. Don Bosseler. with 32 yards, was the Redskins' chief ground gainer. . Phil King, the rookie from Vanderbilt, and Gifford, led the Giant rushers. King, aided by a spectacular 38-yard run, piled up 61 yards and Gifford grounded out 51. Gifford also caught four passes for 28 yards and Mel Triplett, the fullback, snagged three for 63 yards.

The game was marred by six lost fumbles. The Skins recovered four by the Giants but could not j capitalize on them. Both of Washington's fumbles were pounced upon by Harland Svare, the Giants' veteran linebacker, and New York converted each for a score. SVARE RECOVERED Johnny Olszewski's first fumble early in the opening period on the Redskins' 47. The Washington line held after the Giants had .advanced to the 34 and Summerall came in to boot a 41-yard field goal. SummeraU's 37-yarder a few minutes later gave the Giants a 6 to 0 lead at the end of the auarter. Svare's recovery of another Olszewski fumble early in the second period on Washington's 13 paved the way for Summerall,s third field goal. This one from the 20. Conerly's spectacular passing sparked the Giants' 95-yard touchdown march late in the second period. He completed six passes to four different receivers, climaxing his aerial show with a 10-yarder to McAfee in the end zone. Conerly's second touchdown pass, a 13-yarder to Gifford, completed! a 54-yard surge midway in the third quarter.. New York's third touchdown was set up by Svare, who intercepted a Guglielmi pass on Washington's 26 and raced to the one before he was finally' brought down.”

“Leroy Kelly scored three touchdowns and ran more than 100 yards the first time this season to lead the Cleveland Browns to a 28-17 victory Sunday over the New York Giants. Kelly, flashing his brilliant running form of past seasons after a siege of injuries, totaled 124 yards, the 19th time in his career he has cracked the 100-yard mark. belly's three touchdowns got the Browns out to a 20-0 lead before the Giants scored in the first half. After the Giants cut the margin to 21-17, Bill Nelsen threw 24 yards to Gary Collins in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

1970: Eagles Upset Giants in Monday Night Game
“The New York Giants were riding a six-game winning streak as they came to Philadelphia for a Monday night contest on November 23, 1970. Head Coach Alex Webster’s team was 6-3, having lost its first three games before catching fire. While QB Fran Tarkenton remained the key to the offense in his fourth year with the club, the addition of HB Ron Johnson, who played his rookie season with the Browns in ’69, added a versatile ground-gaining element. Veteran WR Clifton McNeil and rookie TE Bob Tucker were good receivers who were also newcomers to the club. While the defense had talent in DE Fred Dryer and FS Carl “Spider” Lockhart, there were concerns about the remainder of the line and linebacking corps. The Giants had not been to the postseason since 1963 and were looking to keep pace in the newly-formed NFC East...”

It's going to be pretty tough this year to name a rookie of the year in the NFL's National Conference. The two standouts after 12 games are Billy Sims of the Detroit Lions and Earl Cooper of the San Francisco 49ers.

“But Cooper also provided quarterbacks Steve DeBerg and Joe Montana blocking help on passing plays and also caught three passes for 86 yards and one touchdown. It was the only touchdown of the game as the 49ers snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Giants saw their modest winning streak snapped at two, but worse than that they were held to only 131 yards in total offense, and their quarterback, Phil Simms, was sacked 10 times...”
