Evaluating the quality of our drafts

Rosey Brown HOF 74 : 11/23/2017 2:37 pm
There are many ways of evaluating our drafts. One way is to measure the number of NFL games played by an entire draft class including UDFA. Obviously 10 games by Eli does not equal 10 games by Zack DeOssie. While this is less than perfect I think the long term trends are interesting to analyze. Some assumption were made on players who are still active. They will be spelled out.

Summary
Ernie got about 160 more games played than Jerry out of each draft class. Generally Jerry drafted worse but also had incredible bad luck with injuries.

Jerry found 1 udfa that played more than 50 games (Cruz). Ernie found 5 udfa that played more than 50 games (Comella, Rivers, Seubert, Grant and Dockery. Ernie has 10 drafts and Jerry only has 6 in this analysis.

Think the Giants (probably already have) need to study the cause of their injuries. So many top draft choices with short careers. (Ross, Smith, Alford, Phillips, Thomas, Nicks, Wilson) These are the obvious ones most likely there are more that we don't know about. Seems to have started in 2007.
Injuries I discount. Violent game played by big fast

Reese was a good scout. I used To blame him for too much. IMO he's not fully in charge like some GMs. Bellichick has more control

I certainly believe he's in love W WRs DBs and DL guy's in the draft and FA to anfault. But ownership Had to be on board w the idiotic Vernon contract. Snacks was a great signing but they let both Hankins and Joseph which made them draft Bromley and Tomlinson. They drafted Apple and passed On Taylor Decker and Tunsil. It's how he views the positions

I think he's one of The worst GMs I the entire league when it comes to OL drafting and evaluation. The spot LB not far behind.

Never mind his record after the 2nd round is abysmal.
This is interesting,

and useful if you're trying to compare Jerry Reese's drafts with Ernie Accorsi's. It's a limited stat, but it's something.

However if you really want to evaluate the quality of any GM's drafts, the context isn't how the last guy did, it's how did the other guys around the league do at the same time. So I'd want to know:

What's the mean # of games played per draft class for each year?

What's the median for each year?

Not to mention, this discounts Jerry's drafts since he's had a narrower time frame to have his draft picks play in. Thus, the comparative stat from the same time frame would be that much more relevant.

I'm not swayed by this much at all.
Agree that narrower time frame

is a factor, but if you make a simple bar chart you can see the change--it's pretty stark. I think this is a very interesting measure even if it can't tell the whole story by itself.

+1.
As I said in a thread last week or so..in his tenure of 11 drafts... its hard to finding 22 good players.
The final straw for me was NO top 2 round OL picks in the '17 draft, then seeing how poor our OL STILL was the first 2 preseason games.
