What's changed offensively from 2015?

an_idol_mind : 11/24/2017 9:40 am
The 2015 Giants scored 420 points (6th in the NFL) with these players:

QB: Eli Manning
HB: Rashad Jennings
WR: Odell Beckham/Reuben Randle
TE: Larry Donnell
OL: Ereck Flowers/Justin Pugh/Weston Richburg/Geoff Schwartz/Marshall Newhouse

Now, there's some talent discrepancy between the 2015, 2016, and 2017 versions, but not all that much aside from a healthy Beckham. Yet even with a healthy Beckham and a much better defense, the Giants scored only 310 points last year (26th in the NFL) and are on pace for only 250 this year.

Part of the purpose of hiring McAdoo was to keep the good times rolling on offense. So what the heck happened there?
Coughlin
Reb8thVA : 11/24/2017 9:51 am : link
Was fired. He provided a counterweight to McAdoo so the offense was more a blend of the two.
Lost Newhouse and Schwartz. All you need to know.

.
An uninjured Richburg made a difference

And wasn't a FB around to block back in 2015.
the defense sucked
hitdog42 : 11/24/2017 10:00 am : link
so we played a lot of highscoring games... which made stats look better.... is a starting point. so we called a more aggressive game

teams did not realize fully yet that if you triple OBJ you basically stop the offense.

Eli played better
The biggest change is actually
Jimmy Googs : 11/24/2017 10:01 am : link
Eli's decline...
They turned the whole shooting match
HomerJones45 : 11/24/2017 10:08 am : link
Over to the guy who knew the least. Who could predicted a disaster?

yeah, that was it. In the spirit of charity and human kindness, teams let us score.

Hint: Eli looks better in a professional offense.

Eli's play is partially responsible for the drop off from 15 to 16 - he simply wasn't as good.

This year the receivers are trash so I don't blame him - although I don't think he's been good, either.
McAdoo became
rocco8112 : 11/24/2017 10:28 am : link
head coach. There is no larger change. Giants had a hall of fame HC for over a decade. This guy got the top job and the Offense became league worst.

Important to note McAdoo was given the job to keep the offense humming and improve it. That is a joke.
The league got woke

To our particular brand of suckitude and what to dial up on D.

And then Reese doubled and tripled down on the same stuff, same ideas and biases and Mac and Sully doubled down on the same stuff further compounding the problem.
Regarding WR injuries.
idiotsavant : 11/24/2017 10:38 am : link
It's no coincidence.

During or just prior to Manning's rookie year. It became obvious.

Weak OL play leads to short dump downs and Chuck and duck and a reduced route tree

which leads the D to sit back and hammer people

which leads to WR injuries.

EE got a case if the dropsies last night. Same reason.

Maybe Mac and Sully doubled down in short pass as run, or maybe they had to due to a beliefe that the line cannot run block, or an inability to coach that aspect up or maybe it's in Jerry Reese, but that's a waste of ODB, Shep, King, EE and Lewis.
the biggest difference is Tape.
George from PA : 11/24/2017 11:46 am : link
McAdoo offense was new.....defenses figured out that cover 2....limited his offense....and McAdoo has nit figure how to break cover 2.....other then prolong drives.....and the Giants are not consistent enough.

in 2015 they were quick hit offense.

A.Rodgers mobility is perfect.
A few things
hassan : 11/24/2017 1:04 pm : link
people figured this offense out. Mac also changed it to his full wco attack which does not attack second and third levels of defense.

Beckham was not getting tripled as often.

Coughlin forced Mcadoo to run more big sets and estalish run and some playaction. Gone now.

Richburg has been exposed. Bull rush him and hes weak.
We are far
Sneakers O'toole : 11/24/2017 2:42 pm : link
more heavy handed now than we were in 15, and we dominate practice

Just look at the tape
Also hair
idiotsavant : 11/24/2017 2:51 pm : link
Both coaches and players:

MUCH improved hair, in quality, in volume AND in style.

Hands Heavy...with gel!

Styles On Point.
Lots of factors:
FStubbs : 11/24/2017 4:09 pm : link
I'd say one of the biggest differences is that Richburg was actually pretty good in 2015. Then he fell off the table.
Watching a pair of full games on youtube from 2015
shockeyisthebest8056 : 11/24/2017 6:42 pm : link
(1 great, Saints, and 1 terrible, Eagles), there's more variety of personnel and especially formations. Even though they use 11 personnel more than anything else in these 2 games, there's far greater variety in number of formations they use. There's also far more usage of a fullback than we've seen the last year and a half.

One thing that stands out even then is how much yardage gets left on the field due to Eli's lack of mobility. That's something that must be taken into consideration when choosing the next QB of this franchise.

Compared to how he looked then, it's probably safe to say Shane Vereen is cooked now.
