Is my memory correct about when Dave Jennings got cut?

njm : 11/30/2017 5:09 pm
I believe it was the final cut before the 1985 season. If memory serves, Parcells made all the cuts but 1 the day before the deadline. Parcells then made "the toughest cut I've ever made" and announced Jennings was cut the day of the deadline. I think that's called respect.

I spoke with Dave the day he was cut by the Giants. He was devastated and completely torn to play for the hated Jets. He was a Giant through and through. One of the nicest persons I have ever met.
There are a few guys

I wish could have stayed with the Giants a couple of years longer so they could have been on that '86 team.

Dave Jennings tops the list.
He graduated St. Lawrence the year before I got there

Two of my freshman roommates were football players (one was really gifted for D3) and Jennings came up to our room to meet them. Still wanted to be part of the SLU family. Really good guy.
I met Dave when I was a foster parent for a mentally

challenged child and Dave volunteered at a Special Olympics event in New Haven CT. Nice guy, very friendly. I recall how heartbroken he was when cut by the Giants. He tried to respond to reporter's questions but soon could only hold a towel to his face and cried.
A great Giant

Would love to have heard his take on all the ass clownery of this current regime.
Watching him punt was a thing a beauty

He was one of the Giants you could always be proud of as a fan even if the team was losing.

In the 80's I used to run into him frequently at the same corner store when getting a morning paper, coffee and roll on the way to work. He was always very pleasant.
If he didn't play during the Ray Guy era, he would be in the HOF

... I LOVED Dave Jennings... for many years there was only Dave Jennings that gave me any joy on many Sundays.
R.I.P Dave Jennings...

when our team was horrible in the 70's and the offense could not move the ball, Dave was a busy guy. We needed a great punter back then and he and Ray Guy were the best punters in the league at that time.
We grew up in the same neighborhood and I caught many of Dave's punts

(and his passes - he was a very good athlete) back in the day. He didn't take up organized football until quite late, I think senior year of HS. But back to the cut - yeah, painful. He was the one bright light for a few years there.

That had to be pretty awesome. I couldn't imagine trying to catch a punt that went higher than I could see.

On Monday, the Giants trimmed their roster to 51 by cutting eight players. Asked today why he hadn't announced Jennings's cut along with those others, Coach Bill Parcells, his voiced choked with emotion, said quietly, ''I don't know why.''

After a lengthy pause he added: ''I didn't want to put him in a group with those other guys, because he's not. We're talking about about one of the best guys who ever kicked.''

'Most Difficult Cut'

Parcells called the move ''the most difficult cut I've had to make as a head coach,'' and added, ''This is one of those days when you wish you were in another line of work.''

Jennings was a favorite of mine as well. But if Ray Guy had never been born, Jennings still would never be in the HOF. Guy is the only pure punter in the HOF and he got there because of LITERAL fame, not because he was the best punter. Jennings was neither famous nor by any metric close to being the best punter of his era.

This was in Garden City NY in the '60s. Dave's dad was a dean or something at Adelphi U. and Dave lived right next to the Adelphi campus, which then had a lot of open space. I lived a few blocks away. We had a regular sandlot two-hand touch game going there after school. Dave would punt by himself until we all got there - that's where it all really started with his punting - and, yeah, his punts were pretty amazing even as a teenager - although not like they were when he was fully grown. We were mid-teens at the time.
