There's nothing more

exciting than watching Diego Maradona in a big yellow bow tie grabbing ping-pong balls out of a big bowl.

Maradona..

could go off the rails at a moment's notice!!!

I could see him picking a ball smashing it and snorting the contents!
The home team
Pete in MD : 12/1/2017 10:51 am : link
got a relatively easy group.
They usually seem to..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/1/2017 10:55 am : link
between the draw and the preferential reffing, the hosts have an incredible amount of success getting out of the Group stage.

Korea, anyone??
I'm all in on France...
bw in dc : 12/1/2017 10:57 am : link
I never thought I would ever say that...
Yes! Egypt has an amazing chance to advance!
Young Elijah : 12/1/2017 10:58 am : link
Very happy right now.

No group of death at all - my how the global football landscape has shifted.

They have really good young talent coming through.
I will be

rooting for Poland (I'm Polish-American.) I really like their draw.
England didn't do badly
PatersonPlank : 12/1/2017 11:02 am : link
Top two move on and outside of Belgium there isn't much there.

Love the combo of Griezemann, Pogba, Kante, Mbappe, etc...

shockingly Russia has the easier group

they couldn't have gotten a better group if they had rigged the draw
France is flawed
Go Terps : 12/1/2017 11:32 am : link
Lots of talent, but they don't seem to know what they want to be.

No terribly difficult group. The strongest might be the Germany group.

As a Spain supporter I don't like the possibility of playing host Russia in the first elimination match. Possibility for sketchy shit there.

Could still see them struggling. Uruguay and Egypt wont be easy outs.
Like many millions...
bw in dc : 12/1/2017 11:53 am : link
or even billions, I hope Messi gets a WC to round out such a brilliant career.

Personally, I don't think he needs it, because I think he's pound for pound the best player ever, but it would silence many who put such a premium on a WC win. And they hold that against Messi...

Plus Englands playoff game will be versus Group H, which is pretty weak. So Belgium and England should have a good path to the final 8.
I'll..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/1/2017 11:56 am : link
pull for Belgium. Love de Bruyne's game.
An interesting aspect of this tournament
Go Terps : 12/1/2017 12:02 pm : link
It figures to be the end of the Messi-Cristiano hegemony over everyone else. Who will be the next player(s) to dominate international discussion?

I think FMIC was talking about 2002,
Go Terps : 12/1/2017 12:33 pm : link
when South Korea got some enormous refereeing breaks in beating both Italy and Spain. The Spain match in particular was horrific.

Wow eat your own head? I'm rooting for Korea now! You'll have to post pictures.
GT..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/1/2017 12:41 pm : link
nailed it. While the Korea-Italy game was bad, Spain got absolutely screwed (I think they had 2 goals disallowed for offsides that weren't and Korea scored on a goal that was).

An Italian newspaper investigated and found that corrupt refs were used, but they reached a more ominous conclusion for Spain - the match was fixed, and likely from the directive of Blatter.
The Spain match went 0-0 to penalties
Go Terps : 12/1/2017 12:47 pm : link
Spain had two goals unjustly disallowed. One for a foul, the other where the ball was incorrectly judged to have gone over the end line before Joaquin crossed to Morientes to head in late. Watching that at like four or five in the morning and just sitting there stunned...

That shit was on my mind when Iniesta made things right eight years later against the Netherlands.
Geez..

Nah, it just shows how fucked up I was over it. That was like the Desean punt return game times a million for me. I think the linesman's name was al-Ghandour or something like that. May have been from Sierra Leone but I'm not completely sure.

Fucker.
Ah, gotcha!

De Bruyne will have enormous expectations on him as well, as will Pogba.

I love watching De Bruyne play. I think he's steadier than Pogba, who is very temperamental on the field.

I think the sky is the limit for Marcus Rashford, too. Apparently Real have their eye on him right now...

De Bruyne is incredible

Watching him and David Silva work together at City is a treat. I'm very interested to see what Germany looks like. Kroos has been out of form, and Ozil really needs to leave Arsenal... How will Germany be put together?

Ozil is a strange cat. You never know which Mesut will show up - one of the best playmakers in the world or someone just going through the motions like they have mono. He played pretty well for the German team in the qualifiers. But once he got back to Arsenal, it's been back to bi-polar Mesut.

Germany always seems to find a way. I didn't see 2014 coming. Then they just killed Brazil. So I just assume Low and their football machine figures it out...
Ozil
Go Terps : 12/1/2017 4:16 pm : link
When he's in the mood I think he's one of the best in the world. So, so smart with his movement off the ball.

I've felt for years he'd be a perfect fit in Barcelona. The skill set is exactly what they look for.

Maybe an Iniesta influence could be the medicine he needs to get more consistency...
