This could be an interesting development. Possibly looking to go to a market that has not or does not have a Successful Japanese player in its history.

Also looks like the Ham Fighters will post him today.

you are citing something else, Morosi's tweet is about a current Japanese star, not in it's "history".

Dan

I based it on these comments as well. All speculation at this.

Brandon Laird, who offered a similar suggestion (Twitter link): “I feel like he just wants to come and not be compared to other guys who have already been here — to start fresh on his own, show what he can do by himself.”

Just heard on high heat
mitch300 : 12/1/2017 1:44 pm : link
That his brother said that he wants to come to a team that has no history of a Japanese player. Wants to be the first. If and I say IF this is tru, he is leaving out a lot of good teams. Watch him pick the Brewers. LOL
Brewers had Aoki
Heisenberg : 12/1/2017 1:47 pm : link
How many teams haven't had a Japanese player at this point?

By saying he doesn't want to join a team that has no history with a Japanese player, it basically eliminates the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Padres, Mariners, Marlins, Mets, Cubs, Rangers, Astros, Angels and Giants.

In other words, just about every major media market in the U.S.- which undercuts two major points he has also claimed- he wants to win and he wants to be a star.

I think this is more likely bad translation or someone trying to throw up smokescreens.
Yeah this one doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
bceagle05 : 12/1/2017 1:53 pm : link
We're talking about a global star here - he won't be any less of one if he goes to a team that happens to have another Japanese player. Every roster in baseball is a melting pot at this point - I don't think there's any novelty to adding a star from Japan or anywhere else.
On a similar thread on SoxProspects,

they have a slightly different version.

It's from a Jon Morosi tweet:

Shohei Ohtani development: Multiple @MLB team execs believe Ohtani may actually prefer to sign with a club that doesn’t already have a Japanese star; Ohtani’s camp has not commented on that. @MLBNetwork
Fuck, I think the Yankees are gonna miss out on him
DennyInDenville : 12/1/2017 1:55 pm : link
Fuck
That really makes no sense at all
BigBlue4You09 : 12/1/2017 1:57 pm : link
Is it because he doesn’t want the comparisons to Ruth if he goes to the Sox or Yanks? Even then still foolish and lots of other good teams he’s ruling out. Going to a small market team with no history doesn’t make him any more marketable.
Let's
mitch300 : 12/1/2017 2:02 pm : link
Face it, coming to MLB doesn't make financial sense right now. Who knows what he is thinking.
Good luck finding a team without a japanese player
Heisenberg : 12/1/2017 2:02 pm : link

not sure I can find a team not on this list - ( New Window )
Maybe "star" was the key word?
Bill L : 12/1/2017 2:03 pm : link

eh, sounds like some extreme speculation
Greg from LI : 12/1/2017 2:07 pm : link
If he likes everything else about the Yankees, for example, I can't imagine that he'll pass them up just because they have had Tanaka and Matsui (and Kuroda for a few years).

ah, yeah, I guess that does narrow it down.
the other rumor
bhill410 : 12/1/2017 2:50 pm : link
that is even weirder, IMO, is that he wants to be in the center of the country because he hates cross country flights. I honestly have no idea how to take that, but kind of jives with the wanting to become his own brand type thing.

I'd have to do the math, but off the top of my head if you were on a coast, especially the East Coast, most of your away games would have shorter travel times than if you were in the mid-west. How far is Boston from NY for example?
yep
Greg from LI : 12/1/2017 2:57 pm : link
The Yankees play 38 of their 81 road games against the AL East. Of those, only Tampa is more than a short flight away.
Of course to be fair
Bill L : 12/1/2017 3:02 pm : link
he might not be well versed in US geography. And even NY to Tampa probably is a cross-country flight to him.
That
mitch300 : 12/1/2017 3:10 pm : link
rules out the Mariners then.

not buying this Otani Japanese player stuff. capone would know far more than me but I was told by a writer that DiPoto has been "working this harder than any other GM". Ichiro is the best Japanese player of all-time and a future HOFer. They just brought back Iwakuma, if this "rule" were true why in the hell would they have brought back Iwakuma?
Silly

Yeah that sounds suspiciously like some weird smoke screen stuff from agents, to encourage all teams to stay in the game, not just assume it’s a 1 or 2 or 3 horse race. Who knows, we’ll find out soon enough

They aren’t the Nippon “Ham Fighters” they are the Nippon Ham “Fighters.” I’ve seen lots of people say it this way and until I was smartened up myself I wrote it that way too. It’s Fighters.

Right now it's the #SFGiants who have slight edge over #StLCards for Giancarlo Stanton, but it could go either way
