NFT: Yankees Managerial Search

Beer Man : 12/1/2017 5:04 pm
Cashman says the team is close to deciding on the next Manager, and he will be selecting 1 from the 6 already interviewed.

In the meantime, Philly has announced that Rob Thomason will be announced as their Bench Coach next week (so I guess Cashman will actually be selecting from 5 of the 6 interviewed)

I know, shame on the Beer Man for starting a Yankees thread while the Eli vs. MacAdouche cluster fuck is occurring

No problem with starting a Yankees thread here right now.

This place could use a thread about one of the actual very good teams in town right now.

My guess/prediction at the hire is either Mueller or Boone, at this point. The entire time, I've had a weird feeling that Boone will be the guy. Just a guess/feeling.

Was on with Kay and said heíd guess that Wedge and Boone are the final two. Kay said that his guesses were Boone and Mullens.

Both admitted that it was simply their opinions as there somehow havenít been any leaks. Kay was actually flabbergasted by Sherman thinking Wedge was a contender.

Kay said that Beltran will be on the staff

even if he doesn't get the managerial job.
I hope it's Muellens and Beltran on the staff

I don't know what it is but I don't see Boone as the guy.
Yeah I'm not a Boone fan either
bceagle05 : 12/1/2017 5:14 pm : link
but I'm not gonna lose sleep over this either way. None of these candidates are all that thrilling - Wedge is the only choice that would annoy me.
Bam Bam Muelens as manager... never saw that coming.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 12/1/2017 5:18 pm : link
I guess I should prepare myself for Jesus Montero as Yankees manager in 2036.
Both Madden and Sherman have Boone in their final 2
Gatorade Dunk : 12/1/2017 5:19 pm : link
I wonder if it's Boone as manager, Wedge as bench coach, Beltran on the staff in some capacity.

For Muellens, it's obviously manager or bust. For the others, they could add some to the staff.

Haha indeed. With Ruben Rivera as bench coach and Brien Taylor as pitching coach

From my distant vantage point as a fan who follows the team but doesnít know any of the inner workings, I just donít see the appeal of Boone...but he must have shown a lot of the qualities Cash and company are looking for, for him to be considered so prominently

Would love if the note about Beltran joining the staff prove true, seems like a perfect mentor to a lot of the young guys coming up, and the bilingual part is a big plus

Boone is regarded as a very intelligent man that has baseball in his blood. He comes from a long list of baseball Boones. He loves the game and knows it inside and out.

I think people have allowed his stint in the television booth to cloud their judgement a bit. Who knows how good or bad he would be, but Iím not surprised the Yanks are at least a bit intrigued
Yeah, I admit to being a little down on Boone
bceagle05 : 12/1/2017 5:36 pm : link
because he's a bit of a goofball in the booth. Probably unfair to him. Hell, even Buck Showalter showed a sense of humor while working for ESPN, so these guys are different people when the uniform's not on.

I'm definitely prepared to be wrong on this because Sherman listed him as one of his two guesses, but I think Wedge was always the safe fallback option as they interviewed a lot of inexperienced candidates, and I think to some degree, he was seen as a potential bench coach for whatever manager they decided on if it wasn't him. Of the other options, I think only Muellens would be given anything close to resembling carte blanche with regard to choosing his staff.
I just want them to pick someone
RasputinPrime : 12/1/2017 6:41 pm : link
who will fit the players we have. If that is what they are looking for then i'm confident the selection will prove to be the right one.

Cannot understand Wedge at all. He doesn't fit anything Cashman outlined that he was looking for or am I mistaken? I just don't see it.

The Yankees have made their decision on a manager, two sources tell The Athletic. Itís not down to Boone or Meulens; theyíve chosen one of them. We just donít know who yet.

Gotta think it's Meulens
illmatic : 12/1/2017 7:18 pm : link
I'd be surprised if they chose Boone to lead this young team with no experience at all. He would've had to really wow them in the interview and with the way he would implement analytics.

I doubt he wants it but I can see Boone in the bench coach role to get him some experience in that capacity. If he really wants to be part of the game again, he might enjoy doing that. I know the ESPN job is supposed to be cushy and all but I can't see him staying there for years and years. Especially if he wants to be a manager one day.
Does that mean theyíre skipping the fly finalists

to Tampa to meet with the Steinbrenners? If so, Cash must feel really good about whoever his guy is

Greg from LI : 12/1/2017 8:21 pm : link
Leaving aside the fact that I am biased against Boone because he seems like such a dork as a broadcaster, I really find it difficult to believe that they're hiring a guy with no experience as a coach or manager to take the toughest job in MLB.
Boone may well be a great manager
Essex : 12/1/2017 8:22 pm : link
but we gave up a very good manager, who had overachieved with this team, for an absolute unknown quantity. Thatís not a smart decision in my book. I just think Cashman wants to manage and found a stooge. I didnít want Girardi fired, but would have been fine with Muellens, this is just stupid and way too much risk.
