Announcement?

nkleppel : 12/3/2017 10:11 pm
I have been attending NYG games since 1936 and this my 80th year of being at them. Except for time out for my service in the USAF during the Vietnam period and for the period of my surgical residency I have been there for the good as well as the bad, including Super Bowls and have known the Mara family (Tim, Jack & Wellington) since the 30's and the Tisch family (Bob, Steve & Jon) since they took over Jack's share from Timmy. I was speaking to Lance Meadows on the postgame radio show tonight and expressed my disappointment at how the Manning issue has been handled. Wellington, who was a Prince of a man would never have let it happen the way it did and John's statement late this week seemed to me to be "buyers remorse" though offered too late. The coach's story that they needed to do evaluations of the QB situation is lame as there is no way you can do judgment of QB talent with no running game, no offensive line, all of the starting receivers on IR and so many other players also continually on the injury list. Sid Luckman, Red Grange, Jim Thorpe, Bret Favre, Sammy Baugh or even Tom Brady couldn't do any better than Eli with that kind of support when so much time is spent running for your life or lying on the ground looking up at the sky. And you couldn't have more of a gentleman and team player trying to make the best of it than Eli Manning who deserved to be treated much better. Lance Meadows said to me on the air "Look for an announcement from Mara and Tisch tomorrow." Us fans are rarely privy to inside info, but the media often is. What surprise can we expect? Something regarding the coach, the GM or something else we don't expect?
Hell yeah

But Wellington has his warts too
Pete Roselle had to step in and intervene so the Giants could hire George Young
I hope the coach is gone tomorrow

my old man would have loved talking football with you. I do agree with your points about the team around Eli falling apart being the root of our problems

The dream scenario (albeit within a larger, garbage context) is a clean sweep by noon tomorrow.
Heard you on the show
joeinpa : 12/3/2017 11:11 pm : link
You sounded much younger than your age 87

You made many good points thanks.

Did I hear you say you were the doctor for the Dodgers when they were in Brooklyn.

I wasn t certain what you said.
Reese will also go..
deegee1 : 12/3/2017 11:28 pm : link
If there going to get rid of Reese they need to fire him now so they can get a new GM in place by the beginning of the year.. Can't interview new GM's with Reese in place and if you get rid of Reese than McAdoo goes too... Makes sense.. ..

I was team doctor in 1958 (as the left Brooklyn) and first team doctor for LA Dodgers their first year in LA. Came back to Brooklyn and remained there (still, though not in active practice now) in practice till 2002. Still on staffs of 4 hospitals and Professor of Surgery at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn (Formerly called SUNY Downstate) from which I graduated and later trained as a surgeon. My Dad's brother (my uncle Louis) was Wellington's baby sitter when Well was a kid in the 30's. He was a friend of Tim Mara, and everyone in our family was a Giants fan (or we weren't fed). That included NY Baseball Giants, though we lived in Brooklyn. Even my grammar school teachers picked on me (gave souvenir photos of Red Barber to everyone in the class except me). My Uncle Lou's nickname was "Books" (he was a voracious reader and always had a stack of books under his arm) and he was president of the Section 5 club at the Polo Grounds in baseball season. If you "Google" his name you will find many citations about him, articles by Ring Lardner, New Yorker Magazine (he was quite a character) He served as a radio operator on B-17's in WW2 and died in the VA Hospital in Phoenix. When the Giants played their first game against Phoenix when they mover to Arizona, I contacted Wellington who had a "day" for him and the other vets on the Saturday before the Giants-Cardinals game. I have photos they took and Wellington game him a Giants sweater and a book of the history of the Giants (which I got after he died and still keep in my den) and which was inscribed "To Books-----who lived all these days...Well". I was at the PG for Mel Hein day (Pearl Harbor Day 1941 when they played the Dodgers, went to Yale Bowl for the loss to the Jets, saw the Herman Edwards Fiasco at Meadowlands, attended three of our Super Bowl wins--the first with tickets from Wellington when I lost the lottery for tickets---and can be seen in Sec.137 and/144 where the family has a total of 8 seats--with my wife, kids and grandkids. So you can see why I am so upset with the Manning stuff. Hopefully, I will live long enough to see it get better!!!!

Post - as a fan of that duration (not to mention a doctor) you have likely seen a lot. What are your thoughts of the dynamics of current Giants decision making and the relationship between the two owners?

I would ask a question how would you have done this because no matter what you believe it was time for a change. The most simple reasons lack of production and the team record under his leadership or the chance to evaluate other QB’s. That’s the fault with all this needless noise no one threw him to the wolves for dinner he made a decision all by himself. Eli has always said next man up well this time it was the guys behind him who are next men up.

As for the bad media stuff that’s on the fans, announcers, writers and former team players. Now to blame the Ownership, GM, HC about a decision that was discussed between them just showed how foolish fans believe they can control a team decisions. I felt it was time to walk away from JPP he resigned at present he looks like the person we could be saying next man up before this season is done. I’m a Giants fan been one it seems all my life I’ve no hard feelings towards the HC, GM, Owners because non of them wanted this team to be 2-10. In life you take the good with the bad there is a beginning and an ending for players but the Team remains, yet many have done much to harm the reputation of this Team because one player was benched. I’m a vet who sees the disrespect being shown to our presidential position, how many believe if Thrump is replaced his replacement will just regain all the respect lost? Eli may play again for the Giants I can’t control that just as you can’t he will not get the farewell tour many want but he still will be a former Giant player one day. Remember that if you throw stones at your own house all the world will laugh at your stupidity.
The Giants need more fans like you Doc...

Every Giants fan needs to read about longtime fans like this.

It is especially important now as the direction and reputation of this franchise has never been more in question.

Thanks for sharing nkleppel. Sounds like you've had one heel of a successful life so far! Thanks for your service and be well.

Was never a great football man, he made plenty of bad decisions, but he was never a classless individual and too loyal if anything. The worst thing he did was have too much faith in ex Giant players to be great coaches and front office people, Alex Webster and Andy Robustelli. Then could not get along with his nephew and made several bad coaching hires and bad trades. The Fred Dryer trade, the second Tarkington trade, the Morton trade. They also had many horrible drafts. But I never thought Wellington ever did anything classless, the worst thing that happened was the Bavaro situation, he sacrificed the rest of his career for the 1990 Super Bowl and they botched up his handling after the season badly. I do believe they did correct it though, but still did not bring him back, that was the worst I remember.
