The Perfect Storm Draft Occurs ...

Manny in CA : 12/4/2017 2:18 am
When Need marries Best Player Available. The draft site that I've learned to trust best over the years, (2nd to Mike Mayock) is CBS Sports. So according to their BPA rankings (and Giants position needs), here how I look at he 2018 draft ...

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2018/all

(3) Quenton Nelson - OG . Notre Dame

(5) . Orlando Brown - OT - Oklahoma

(6) . Saquon Barkley - RB - Penn State

(7) . Roquan Smith - ILB - Georgia

(8) Lamar Jackson - QB - Louisville

(10 Courtland Sutton - WR - Southern Methodist

(11) Darius Guice - RB - LSU

(12) . Mason Rudolf - QB - Oklahoma State

(14) . James Washington - WR - Oklahoma State

(15) Colton Miller - OT - UCLA

(17) . Josh Rosen - QB - UCLA

Several options are available

First of all, don't reach, despite your need; trade down if the quality is not worthy at your draft position; trade draft picks for a worthy veteran; or trade those high picks for future multiple draft picks.

Rosen and Darnold are going 1-2

Unless Darnold stays in school, which I tend to doubt and which would be extremely foolish

And Baker Mayfield #3.

To us.

I don't know about you....if I'm Mara or any incoming GM...I try to kiss Elis ass as much as possible and have him play out his final 2 seasons. Then after that I draft Barkley.

Yes I know if you draft this high you should take a QB but the object is winning right? Eli hasn't lost the physical skills he can still play. He will have his WR's coming back next year and a more experiened Engram. Draft Barkley and now you have a dynamic offensive weapon out of the backfield.

Now the offensive line is shit...but spend the rest of your offseason and draft if need be on fixing that. I think you do that, the defense plays better, add some depth there and I think you're looking at a playoff team the next 2 years.

if we pick Baker Mayfield in the first round. Mediocre arm, questionable personality, doesn't read defenses well. I'm not yet convinced that we should pick Rosen or Darnold if we have the chance. We need to pick the best damn football player available. I am curious right now about the possibility of Josh Allen falling to the second round. He is the most gifted athlete of the QB group, aside from Lamar Jackson.
Pick Rosen or Darnold

and let him sit behind Eli for a year. A perfect answer.

I wished that would have happened. Thanks to McAdoo, I doubt it will.
A couple thoughts
Rjanyg : 12/4/2017 7:47 am : link
First, I love the idea of Quenton Nelson in blue mainly because I think he is gonna be a fixture on the interior of somebody's O Line. A can't miss player.

Smith from Georgia and Chubb from NC State are complete studs that will do the same to a defensive front.

When the final grades for the QB's are in, I think the order will be Darnold, Rosen then Mayfield. Since we have the 2nd pick right now and assuming Cleveland stays in the one spot and takes Darnold, I would assume Rosen will be the first pick. I can see a scenario where Cleveland trades back with Denver with Denver taking Darnold and Cleveland taking Mayfield.

If Eli were to stay and the new GM/HC like Webb, I would love Barkley in the backfield. He is a field tilter and would balance out our offense immediately.

This is all dependent on what Mara and Tisch do with front office personnel.
my wish

I hope Webb shows potential when he is finally put in a game - enough potential to keep Eli a couple more years and pass the torch to Webb ... that said - trade down with team that is going QB and get a stud RT !

Probably. But if the Niners end up 2, they may stay and take Barkley. Also Lamar Jackson could break into the first 2.
BPA
fkap : 12/4/2017 8:25 am : link
is misunderstood, IMO. there's usually various tiers of players. You don't pick a lower tier to fill a need under the BPA theory. After that, position mixed in with ability to fill that position in a lower round is heavily weighted. IF a stud QB is available, as well as a stud RB, take the one you need most coupled with which is the hardest to address. and this also balances with virtually every position being a position of need, on most teams. With a top 5 draft spot, there's going to be a plethora of players in the top tier available. Therefore, position will count just as much as BPA, as it usually does in round one.

BPA according to Reese means nothing. This is a guy who thought David Wilson was BPA. And
If the Giants touch Mayfield with a Top 5 pick
gmen9892 : 12/4/2017 9:20 am : link
It would be an incredible reach. The guy has talent, but there are a BUNCH of question marks with his game and personality. 2nd round? Sure, sign me up.

Top 5 pick, and Im looking at Barkley, Darnold, Brown, Nelson, or Chubb.
Has Allen been downgraded?
bhill410 : 12/4/2017 9:31 am : link
Everyone on this board seems to love mayfield because they actually see Oklahoma games, but I thought the consensus among experts is that Allen is top 3 above mayfield.
I love Nelson
Powerclean765 : 12/4/2017 9:32 am : link
and would be pretty excited about Orlando Brown too.
I wonder where Lamar Jackson
Simms11 : 12/4/2017 10:03 am : link
is going to be drafted. I think he's going to move up draft boards. He would be a defenses nightmare. A better version of Vick.
I don't get the love for Lamar Jackson.
Section331 : 12/4/2017 10:06 am : link
Tremendous athlete, but I don't see the accuracy. The top QB's are Darnold and Rosen in some order. I'm not even crazy about Mayfield. I have questions about his ability to throw outside the numbers, and he gets happy feet when pressured.

He's gotten better this year. Some team will take a chance on him in the first.

I can see that, but not with a top 5 or even 10 pick. He's definitely worth a flier late in the first, for example, he will almost certainly be better than DeShone Kizer.
