but if management does indeed want to keep Eli on through next season to mentor his replacement....
Does he get a financial apology of any sort, for being dragged through the mud this year?
Sorry, I have to laugh in advance at the responses that this is going to get, but it's not out of the realm of possibility, so some of you "Eli is overpaid" crowd might want to refill your blood pressure medication prior to this offseason.
An extension?
Eli is under contract 2 more seasons, financially it always made the most sense to part ways after 2018.
It could be sped up, if anything, but I'm not sure what you mean by financial apology. I doubt the Giants do anything with Eli's contract.

A clever restructure that is beneficial to both parties, but guarantees more money to Eli that he would have normally gotten.
Ding ding
I don't believe Eli is overpaid, but there are too many guys on this team who unfortunately are.
Jesus H ... hail naw!!!
I still think the odds on bet here is Eli plays for Jacksonville next season (with all respect to Bortles somewhat decent game yesterday)
Get a new coach, fix the OL and keep Eli as the #1 while his replacement learns. Not forcing his exit is in the Giants best interest.
But more money? He's been paid a quarter billion by NYG. Or close to it.

I see no reason the Giants would do that and Eli has zero leverage. His only option is to retire.
it wouldn't piss me off, just think it would be unnecessary and stupid.
I can't recommend Gary Kubiak enough for the offensive coordinator role.

So pushing a massive cap hit further into the future and possibly making it larger?
They absolutely should.
I am sick and tired of the media blaming Elis "diminishing skills" Ask OBJ if his receiving records over his first three seasons would have been even greater if Eli hadn't sucked so much.
There are no guarantees that Webb is not the QB of the future, or that any of the guys in this draft are franchise QB's. Or that our final draft status will net us that guy.
I personally wouldn't saddle the incoming coach with this same issue next year.
Imagine December 2018 and the Giants are 2-9, with an uninspiring season at QB.
This could so easily happen again.
I've been saying a financial apology is a possibility if he is to return under center this past week. If the no-win, drunk-driving McNabb could earn a financial apology, then Eli certainly should demand one. Not just a financial apology from the organization but a financial commitment that goes beyond the year to year option that exists on the remaining 2 years of his contract. The final 2 years of his contract contains $32M in unearned salary and bonuses. Next year alone his salary and bonus is $16M. So he should sit with the owners and work out a compromise. A restructure with a $25M signing bonus?
If the Giants are unwilling to compromise, then Eli should collect his $5M on the 3rd day (not the 5th like some have mentioned) of the league year and tell them that he will see them in September.

Good post, but I think if the Giants get a top five pick they will target the QB they like and Eli will be done in blue.
Hope I am wrong

Agreed. I'm telling you.... People better be prepared for it.
I don't care how great he was 6 seasons ago.

1% chance.
Hey, I'm agreeing with you that it's a possibility.
This shouldn't be about money. Eli has been compensated very well as a Giant. I think the organization can restore a good relationship with Eli without an unnecessary gesture like this.
They'd be better served spending the money to put a better team around him.

I'm fine being alone on the idea. I was reading the tea leaves this past summer and realized that Eli's future was uncertain. I advocated Eli holding out while his cap hit prevented the organization from moving on from him. I was obviously alone on that one too. I'm good. I have big enough shoulders that I can take it.

If the Giants are truthful in that they want to keep Eli until he retires and he has $32M in salary/bonuses remaining, then what is the harm in committing to those financial incentives? The contract contains $16M in salary and bonuses for next year. So if $16M is the floor and $32M is the ceiling, why can't a compromise be made since the Giants would likely pay the full $32M when he would retire?
So the moron section is heard from, how much do you think two-time SB winning QB's make?

He's been overpaid for most of his career, why stop now?

That same moron section should consider starting FA quarterbacks (not cost controlled rookie contracts). For youth, there is Mike Glennon who signed for $14M/yr. For old (recently retired) never won anything, there is Jay Cutler at $10M/yr. Eli will earn a salary of $10.5M next year. To me, he is underpaid based on current market conditions.
