Regardless of where you fall on this, we have just witnessed

history. This will be something you will tell your grandchildren, and something that people will be talking about decades from now like The Fumble. When have you ever seen a situation where the coach/GM mishandled something so badly, where the fanbase rises up in unison to support a player like this, and in the end the ownership changes course based on it. The articles, the billboards, the social media activity, what a spectacle.

The Ice Bowl, The Fumble, The Gatorade Dunk, the Eli debacle.
.. Tell our grandchildren? You are probably making way to much of this

I'll probably tell my grandchildren about Manning to Tyreee and that drive.
The only reason
NoPeanutz : 12/4/2017 1:30 pm : link
for people to show up and watch this crummy season was to see what might have been the final games of the great Eli Manning. HoFer and Champion. And they benched him.
And remember: This season was over before the baseball post-season began. That's 7 home games to expect fans to show up and cheer for your team with nothing on the line. Eli was the only thing this year.
If you are a Giants fan
section125 : 12/4/2017 1:30 pm : link
and a huge Eli Manning fan, PP is right. It will be a blueprint on how not to fuck over your franchise QB...
hopefully, this bad taste will be forgtten quickly

much like the Handley era.
So the coach and GM were fired now
oldutican : 12/4/2017 1:39 pm : link
not because the team was 2 and 10 but because the quarterback of that losing team was benched?
Funny how the Giants always seem to provide historic precedents
jsuds : 12/4/2017 1:42 pm : link
for how not to do thing in the NFL.

1. Not running your franchise w/o eperts
2. Not handing off on the final play of the game with a less than one score lead.
3. Not evaluating your backups by benching your HOF QB and
ending his 210 game consecutive start streak.

What else? I know there are some other trends the Giants have instructed the rest of the NFL to NOT DO.

McAdoo was fired because he took the plan for working Webb and Geno into the remaining games, and botched it.

If he had done it correctly, he'd still have a job, for at least 4 more games.
It’s Our Eli

One of the greatest Giants in franchise history. I think his greatness will grow over time. Rising up from the flames. I forget who said this when Eli first came to town: “NY will grow to love Eli” Boy, we sure did. Maybe it was Archie or Ernie.

This is exactly correct IMO. Had he managed to work in Smith and Webb in "garbage time", he would have finished out the year. But the public outrage at the way he bungled it made it happen early.
Don't think so

That, and there's something to be said for the basic consequences of Not Doing What Your Boss Tells You To Do.

I'm not suggesting McAdoo was insubordinate or anything, but at minimum, he appeared to be completely clueless as to Eli's standing with the ownership, and how important he is to the Giants family.

Nope. Because of HOW the quarterback of that losing team was benched.
I could easily see this being a 30 for 30 or The Timeline special

Lessons learned (and a lot of people know it already)...

You don't pick a fight with someones family. I have a lot of friends who never really appreciated Eli. He is admittedly at the end of his career. Once someone messed with him however, it was likely someone was attacking your sister.

Mara admitted that the plan that McAdoo went to Eli with was exactly the one he signed off on.
