Giants interim GM Kevin Abrams is a cap guy by trade but has worked on his scouting chops and has attended NFL job seminars to prepare for a full-time GM role. Wouldn’t dismiss him as a candidate.

But since scouting isn't his primary background, they would really need an ace scouting director. Have to nail Marc Ross' replacement.
Someone who isn't

a personnel guy by trade doesn't really strike me as a great move. But hell, he could be good, what the hell do I know. If he's a hard worker, good with the media, and knows how to manage a roster, I'll support it.
well if he's attended seminars

on how to be a GM then I am good with him.

Seriously, he may be okay if we get a name HC who wants a big say in personnel matters. Let Abrams handle the contracts and cap stuff and supervise the scouts etc but the coach is the real decision maker in the organization.
Hell if I know anything much about Abrams

No.

He's been here with Reese during this disastrous downfall in regards to personnel management.

How can you give him a shot at running the whole show?

He's good at what he does which is cap and and the business ops side internally which is the only reason he's not getting fired himself.
Two years ago the team hired an

This was my point. There are different GM styles. Some are very hands on with personnel, some more involved with the business side. Either can work provided that the right support staff is there.
Bruce Allen is a cap guy

... So there are good and bad results with these types.

Until this past year, Roseman had a LOT more misses than hits. I'm not sure I'd hold him up as some kind of success story.
Maybe pair

I'm ok with this too. A professional manager who paired with a coach/personnel guy could work.

Managers are rarely thinkers. So you need a team. Thinkers are rarely managers.

Trick is establishing authority in the right places and listening when and where it's best.

Bill B. Obviously does this.

It's results oriented as opposed to process oriented to a degree, my guess. It has to be.

Well said bigbluehoya. A clean sweep is needed.
I am not thrilled with the idea of bringing back Gettleman
Jay on the Island : 12/4/2017 6:39 pm : link
Dorsey would be an excellent hire. Gettleman basically ignored the offensive line while in Carolina.
Abrams would need somebody like Jerry Reese under him.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/4/2017 6:52 pm : link
So did Jerry Reese. Unfortunately, he hired Marc Ross instead.
Success in the NFL involves a lot of random chance.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/4/2017 7:08 pm : link
Even with the best blueprint/roadmap, a team can be derailed by a few bad picks or crucial injuries. So predicting whether Abrams would succeed or fail is largely guesswork.

My gut feeling is that a longtime staffer with minimal scouting expertise would have a hard time keeping the Maras out of the football side, which a successful Giant GM might need to do at times. For example, it's hard to imagine Abrams sidelining Chris Mara, even if he felt it was the best thing for the organization.

Dorsey is a mixed bag. Some real finds in the draft but overall the personnel on KC isn’t that great, especially on defense where they’ve aged very quickly back there.
