Handley is off the hook.

Ralph.C : 12/4/2017 5:23 pm
Before I write this, I must give a (dis)honorable mention to Dan Reeves since he cut Phil Simms after a 1993 season where Simms made the Pro Bowl in order to insert Dave Brown as the starter. Not to mention that horrible series of play-calls he issued when we had first and 10 at the Cowboy 14 with the NFC East and number one seed only a Phil Simms TD pass away. He ran three times. I still shudder when I think about it.

Anyway . . .

I believe Ben has released Handley from the rank of the most hated head coach in recent Giant history. Ray was inept and in over his head, but as a guy whose sole job it was to manage the clock before he was thrust into the position of head coach, I can feel sorry for him with hindsight. There is a more "finger-nails-scrapping-across-the-blackboard" feeling that McAdoo leaves behind.

He benched Eli. Seriously?? The arrogance. The pulled back hair. The grease. Did he really wear shorts and sneakers to the stadium today?

Good bye and good riddance M*****

To me...

His name will go down in the Giants history books as the guy who ended Eli's consecutive game streak. Maybe unfair but oh well.
Hell no

Handley inherited a champion and ran them into the ground. 13-3 and a title to 14-18.
There's plenty of room on the hook

for multiple disastrous coaches.
11-5
jeff57 : 12/4/2017 5:32 pm : link
Handley would have died for that.

Maybe but they were an aging champion.
So age is why they went 14-18?

Is that the story you're going with?

Funny that the nothing-special Dan Reeves managed to get that aging 6-10 team to 11-5 and the playoffs.
Both guys were in

way over their heads.

Handley retains the #1 spot for the reason Greg mentions.
even the dave brown led

94 giants went 9-7. Handley is still king. Mcadoo may have had the worst single season, but he had a winning season and a playoff game. Handley had 2 miserable years and was shown up by Reeves using largely the same core team, just a couple years older.
Not totally kidding

but the first time I saw McAdoo with that slicked back hair, I knew we were in trouble. Last year with the fat suit and not owning a comb, I like him a lot better when he made it look like he didn't give a damn what he looked like.
Handley

I have to say Handley still holds the title for worse head coach. Mac at least had a winning season.

Best. Handle. Ever.
The two are so similar its erie
PatersonPlank : 12/4/2017 6:29 pm : link
Almost the same record, both screwed up the QB position, both were just terrible communicators, hell they even sort of look alike.
Yup Only McAdoo could out Handley

Ray Handley
No he s
joeinpa : 12/4/2017 7:00 pm : link
Not. Guys that cared about Simms the way you care about Eli will never forget.
if u wanted him fired - understandable
bc4life : 12/4/2017 7:04 pm : link
If you hate him, you're pretty pathetic, IMO.
Wait...I thought we couldn’t mention his name.
Steve L : 12/4/2017 8:13 pm : link
He’s the coach we can not name. When did that stop?
Handley

was never as bad as S2 McAdoo but never as good as S1.

And George Young was responsible for the Simms debacle not Reeves.
Are people still going on with this stupidity?

Ray Handley took over a Super Bowl winning team and couldn't break .500. Please stop with this foolishness.

Parcells almost quit the team after the '89 season because he thought it was likely headed for downturn. He stuck around and we won the Super Bowl, but the '91 Giants were the team that Parcells was concerned the '90 Giants were going to be.
This season is worse than either of Handley's seasons.
an_idol_mind : 12/4/2017 8:58 pm : link
However, I think Handley still holds the crown for worst Giants head coach of the past 30 years or so.

For all McAdoo's flaws, he at least didn't go out of his way to wreck the defense. Remember that Handley took guys like LT and Pepper Johnson and threw them into Rod Rust's read and react.

The problem with that argument is the second Dan Reeves took over, they won 11 games with Simms and LT on fumes. The following season, they won 9 games (more than Handley won) with a QB with absolutely zero NFL experience.
