uninspired by the accorsi move

japanhead : 12/4/2017 10:08 pm
love the idea of bringing on a badass consulting guy to run the GM search but accorsi is 76 years old and mara went against his advice several times in the past, re: coughlin, fassell, etc. why bring him in? because he is a former giants GM? mara's sickness for fetishizing anyone who has ever been involved with the giants in any capacity severely limits him.

His Wiki facts:

Consultant work

On November 9, 2012, Accorsi was hired by the Carolina Panthers as a consultant after general manager Marty Hurney was fired.[11]

On December 29, 2014, it was announced that Accorsi had been hired by the Chicago Bears as a consultant for their general manager search after Phil Emery was fired.[12] On November 25, 2015, Accorsi was named a consultant for the Detroit Lions' search for a new General Manager.[citation needed]

On December 4, 2017, John Mara stated in a press conference that Accorsi would assist the New York Giants in hiring a replacement for former general manager Jerry Reese.
Special Adviser to the Detroit Lions
After Accorsi assisted the Lions in their search for general manager Bob Quinn, Accorsi was named as a permanent Special Adviser to the club on January 10, 2016.

Now,it would be good to have someone other than EA bring some input into the search too. Like you and I and BBI!
It's input

From a guy NYG are not only close to, but has a good track record. Nothing wrong with input, we need all the help we can get......CONSULTENT

have him in the mix I would have prefered Bill Parcells helping out.
He will no doubt give his feedback on
EricJ : 12/4/2017 10:59 pm : link
the QBs in the draft too
He will ask Mara:
old man : 12/5/2017 12:57 am : link
What kind of team specifically do you want? That will at least focus the search with specifics, rather than the hodge podge slap guys together approach theyve done. Then likewise that question for GM and HC, and will help fit the kind of GM and HC that can find that kind of talent and put it together , as well as the other aspects of being GENERAL MANAGER.
Accorsi is the reason we won Super Bowls

It was he who wanted Eli Manning and was willing to go against Wellington Mara, trade the house and get rid of kerry Collins. He risked it all.

It was he who hired Tom Coughlin

As we know its the HC/QB combo that delivers titles and he got them both

It was he who instilled the philosophy "you cant have enough pass rushers" and stacked us at DE that put us over the top when thet got hot.

Yes he got alot wrong as all GMs do but the major pieces to win titkes here were put in place by Ernie Accorsi

Except he didn't Tom.
Didn't hire Tom..

And it's been reported many times that he wanted to fire Tom before both titles.
All of these

guys are disciples of George Young..it is time to go outside of the organization to bring in some new blood and new ideas. Both Ernie and Jerry learned from George Young,Gettleman will be more of the same as will Abrams.

EA was the GM when Tom Coughlin was hired. He had a huge say.

Everyone wanted Coughlin fired in 2006 and the fact is - he wasnt fired by EA who was GM.

EA was not with the Giants after 2006 as GM so i dont know what you mean that he wanted him fired after both titles

He wasn't fired by Accorsi because it wasn't Accorsi's call. Mara wouldn't let him fire Coughlin.

TC was hired over Ernie's objection by the Maras (Accorsi wanted Saban/Charlie Weis)). Ernie also unprofessionally got in an argument with Coughlin in the locker room at halftime of the 2006 Bears game after the Hester return. Ernie also leaked a ton of shit to the media. Let's not make it seem like Ernie / TC was a lovefest.
Not an Acorsi fan but...

I would rather he pick the GM than John Mara
I hope he also
TrueBlue56 : 12/5/2017 10:42 am : link
Consults on the quarterback as well. Say what you want about EA, but he knows quarterbacks. He got us out of the malaise of quarterback issues we had by taking a chance on Kerry Collins and then gambled it all on Eli. He also drafted Bernie kosar.
I know that
twostepgiants : 12/5/2017 10:57 am : link
Wellington Mara did not want the Eli trade and wanted to keep Collins and told him of that fact yet Accorsi went and did it anyway.

Accorsi had alot of power as GM.

The Coughlin hire happened very fast with very little search. I doubt Accorsi had any serious objections.

The Giants dont make one person decisions and these type of moves get various inputs from several people. Im sure Accorsi considered firing TC in 2006 - who didnt? Tiki probably saved his job in Washington that year.

We can only go by what was done - not rumors, innuendo, speculation. Maybe the word you heard was from before tbe Washington game and mot after.

EA was GM and Coughlin was hired and not fired. Those are the facts.

Are we really going to reference BBI myth that something happened at halftime at the Bears game?

Accorsi was on board with the Coughlin hiring and worked well with Coughlin. In 2006, when Coughlin was at peak unpopularity, he tried to distance himself a bit from the coach but never said he hadn't wanted him hired, even when he had a chance to in his book.
He has his finger on the pulse of the NFL
montanagiant : 12/5/2017 11:03 am : link
He is extremely well thought of by other front offices. He is media savvy and has access that many do not. This was the first smart decision by Mara in the last 3 years
wow

this should scare you even more

@AKinkhabwala
When Ernie Accorsi retired as #Giants GM, he advocated very very strongly for Jerry Reese. He ultimately convinced ownership Reese was better choice over John Mara's own brother, Chris. Expect him to be an influential voice.
Wait, we should be afraid that he said Reese was a better choice
Greg from LI : 12/5/2017 11:20 am : link
than Chris Mara? I don't like Ernie but that one certainly isn't a strike against him.
Reese's time..

to move on came, but let;s not make it seem like the guy was an incompetent boob.

EA is highly respected for his consulting and has helped several teams help decide on leadership, and for the most part, he's steered those teams in the right direction.

Not sure why this move is "uninspiring"?

I agree. Maybe if they said they were hiring Accorsi you could question it at this point. But, as you point out, his work as a consultant has still proven valuable to a few teams. What can it hurt to have someone from outside the organization help with the process?
The Giants haven't had to look for a GM since Robustelli

Rozelle is the one who talked Young into taking the job. Makes sense to get advice from someone who has advised others how to go about it.
