What is Evan Engram doing playing TE , and not WR ?

Manny in CA : 12/4/2017 10:32 pm
That speed, agility and balance (at 235) ...

Combine comparison with OBJ (who is 40 pounds lighter) ....

OBJ - 4.43 forty, 38.5 vertical, 6.69 three cone

Engram - 4.4 forty, 36 vertical, 6.92 three cone

The Giants picked up TE Ellison, who can BLOCK and catch, they don't need a stallion like Engram getting beat-up by 300 pound linemen.

Creating a lot of mismatches, if you haven't noticed.
Lost season you keep him where he is
montanagiant : 12/4/2017 10:42 pm : link
Getting him better at blocking and NFL level route running and play recognition.

With OBJ back he gets covered by LB's and Safeties which are mismatches
He IS a willing blocker ....
Manny in CA : 12/4/2017 10:57 pm : link

I give him that, but I'd rather see him knocking down 200 pound CBs and safeties (like Plaxico used to, in the run game)

Not too many CBs can stop him (short of Richard Sherman)

He's having a historically productive season for a rookie TE.

I don't understand why we should want to move him when he's excelling where he is.
I think he should be doing what
est1986 : 12/4/2017 11:01 pm : link
They envisioned Brandon Marshall doing opposite of OBJ with Shepard in the slot... But who cares what you call him, tight-end or wide-receiver, he is a route-runner/pass-catcher period

You're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Ain't broke, don't fix it
Yes yes let's make him a WR!!

Engram TD vs Oak - ( New Window )
He's split out wide plenty.
allstarjim : 12/4/2017 11:23 pm : link
So he's playing both. I wouldn't worry about it.
I can see using him at WR
mrvax : 12/4/2017 11:24 pm : link
and Ellison at TE in some formations just because we only have Shepard at WR. Temp position.

Engram is multi tool/route guy. He lines up outside and in the slot as well as inline and the backfield. Why do you want to change his position? He can play anywhere.

and not in a straight jacket in a mental ward
The speed at the combine
section125 : 12/5/2017 7:58 am : link
is an aberration. I have seen him run down from behind by a safety and a linebacker, so far. He is not Vernon Davis fast.

As a tight end he is a mismatch. Not sure you can get that from him flanked wide on every play.

Put a little beef on him and some intense blocking coaching and he'll be a star.
How do..

so many people supposedly watch football but can't process what the fuck they're looking at?
He's nowhere near Beckham's level as an athlete
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/5/2017 8:21 am : link
it goes beyond timed straightline speed. Beckham is an alien. Engram is an exceptional athlete among TEs though. I can't foresee any middle linebacker in the sport trying to cover him.
Manny is just regurgitating what the idiot Ronde Barber was
Victor in CT : 12/5/2017 8:21 am : link
spewing on the game Sunday.

Engram is best at TE. He is already an average blocker and will get better because he wants to improve. He is a complete mismatch for Ss and LBs. He would not be for top cover CBs.

They follow the ball like watching 'PONG' and check the scoreboard occasionally. It all looks the same I hear.
Putting him at TE creates mismatches
Section331 : 12/5/2017 8:54 am : link
that don't exist at WR. What LB or S can cover him? I get that his size is a matchup nightmare for corners, too, but having him as a threat in the middle of the field is more valuable, IMO.

And it doesn't mean that he can't line up out wide, as he did a couple of times on Sunday.

+1... for those that want him to play inline TE.. why let him get the abuse that comes with inline blocking DEs and LBs.. when we can abuse the CBs.. ideal position for him would be in the slot but we already have shepard..
I see Engram ....
Manny in CA : 12/5/2017 1:21 pm : link

As a Kelvin Benjamin (Carolina Panthers) type receiver, who by-the-way, bigger at 6'5", 243.

Benjamin is a terror on the outside as a pass receiver and blocker on the run game.

The Giants tried had to make Brandon Marshall "that guy", opposite OBJ, it didn't work out. That's OK, they have Engram.

Brandon Marshall is that guy
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/5/2017 1:50 pm : link
he's just not healthy. When it is, he's a physical blocker.

Engram's a TE. Playing on the line is part of the job. We're nowhere near the point where his blocking is bad enough to say he shouldn't play there.
LOL...

Even the Panthers don't consider Benjamin a Panthers guy anymore!!
Doesn't change a thing, Fats ...
Manny in CA : 12/5/2017 6:45 pm : link

I mentioned Engram as a Panther because most people recognize him with his original team.

Carolina traded him because they need a speedy receiver as their "X", we don't have that problem, when OBJ comes back. I see Engram as the perfect "Y" possession type.

About Marshall (season #12) - I was looking forward to him complimenting OBJ because he's a big strong guy, too (6'5", 232). Unfortunately, he started off slow and then he got hurt. If he comes back strong, that's wonderful.
Carolina..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/5/2017 7:28 pm : link
needs a speedy receiver as their X??

C'mon - it just gets fucking worse and worse.
Panthers needed a speed receiver to open up the underneath zones ...
Manny in CA : 12/5/2017 8:44 pm : link

So Kelvin had to go, because they had Funchess who can play the big man role (and probably cost less $$$).

http://www.espn.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/27910/kelvin-benjamin-trade-a-shock-but-makes-sense-for-panthers

https://247sports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/Bolt/Steve-Smith-gives-take-on-Panthers-Kelvin-Benjamin-trade-109801930

Benjamin is a Possession receiver; big body that can play like an NBA center in the intermediate zones and go up for the ball (fades etc.) in the "Green" zone.

Engram is a terrific player now at 235. I don't want to see him get fattened up to 260 so he can wrestle with the big boys. That would be a shame.
