My son played 4 years of varsity. Watching every play is a combo of making sure he gets up and is healthy every play and watching the game and rooting for his team.
Brutal game.
I have an orthopedic friend. He said Mon mornings are almost all football players from Fri/Sat coming in with ailments.
In his recovery. Been watching football a long time, seen some injuries that almost made me puke, but the one that sticks in my mind is the Johnny Knox injury. He literally got bent in half backwards, IDK how he's walking around.
Call me insensitive, but watch the way defense is being played in this league (Bengals being a prime example). Defensive players are throwing their bodies all over the place, exhibiting a complete disregard for form tackling, their own safety, and the safety of the opposing team. It needs to stop.
Always keeps his head up, hits with shoulder and wraps.
Just like how they taught us in JV/varsity football in the late 80's. Don't why most players now just launch with their heads down and don't attempt any wrapping.

Was fortunate enough to know Ryan a little bit back when he was at Ohio State. Nicest guy in the world and a fantastic player. Not that that's a prerequisite for hoping someone is alright, but it was horrifying watching him seemingly be unable to feel his lower half.
Hopefully he's able to adjust his tackling style, should he be able to return to the field. Just glad he seems to be doing well, compared to what it could have been.
That was a brutal game last night with some of those hits. I agree with the OP, really tough to watch at times.
...it was great while it lasted - pricing fans out with insane ticket and PSL prices are one thing - but injuries are the death knell - particularly the concussions.
Inevitably, litigation will change the game to the point where it's very different from what we grew up with.
many defensive players haven't learned the proper technique and simply try to hit a player as hard as possible by leading with the head, and for some, it is their only chance to stay in the league.
Just look at the way the Redskins tackle (or Nat Berhe for that mater). They propel themselves to deliver a hit intended to knock a player out of bounds or to knock them down with a shoulder blow instead of dragging them to the turf.

The Seahawks, Buckeyes and Univ of Washington among others use a rugby company to improve their tackling form. Not only did they lower their missed tackle percentage but they keep their head and neck out of harms way
I'd say fewer guys use the head now. Many get it. Some don't. Shazier often lead with the head. He hit guys with the crown. But I don't think he ever got s penalty.
He had a kill shot on a Bengals player 1-2 years ago. Just crushed the guy with the crown on a swing pass. No penalty. No fine.
I think it was the game Brown got KOd but nobody talked about Shazier hit with the crown: I thought it was worse than Burfitct hit on Brown. Burdock got a few games. Shazier got a few pats on the back for the big hit.
He's improving! Read he's getting movement back in lower extremities. Hope he makes a full recovery. Might be due to the advancement of medicine and urgent care. Again All The Best!!
Did he ever do it? Maybe. He played for 13 years and has been retired for 24, so I'm sure I don't remember every moment of his career. It would have been unusual for him to do so.
Watch the highlight clip linked below and tell me that he did a lot of leading with the helmet. In almost all of them he keeps his head up and hits with his shoulder or chest. Link - ( New Window )
I've seen Shazier make some dirty plays over the years

Read he is improving, thank God.
The injury is a result of bad tackling and leading with the head. The exact thing football is trying to prevent.

He needs to stop leading with his head. But, it was pretty scary to watch.
Exactly!

Don t mean to be cavilier about any injuries. But that game last night was a throw back to another era.

I have no stats to refer to but it sure seems teams have as many if not more serious injures this year than in the past.
