I did not see this discussed will delete if it is.
Last night the MNF host told Gruden that the over/under is 35 to 1 on him and the Giants. He asked Gruden if we should take the over or under.
Gruden answered the under if Eli stays.
Interesting. Did not slam the door on that!!
With all due respect, who would be inspiring to you? I’ve noticed you’ve basically trashed every name that’s been thrown around. There’s only so many options.
And Callahan not changing any of the calls even though he was facing their former HC.
By the way CNBC guys are making fun of McAdoo. Cramer and the two other hosts this AM.
You mean the same Pat Schurmur who did a bang up job being the HC and also calling plays for the Browns? I know he is on another level, but isn't that the same shit we just had with Mac?
I don't find that very inspiring either....I would be all in on John Harbaugh though.
John Harbaugh will not be available.
Not sure why he gets so much attention for job openings. He was a decent coach and won a SB, but he isn't some genius waiting in the wings.
I really don't think he wants to coach again anyway. He was burnt out after TB, which is why he stepped away. The guy is fun off the field and a prankster, but he's told many people he was killing himself working as a HC.
Moving on ...
Fats spelled out my objections to Gruden nicely. He's been out of the league for a decade. He was a supposed offensive guru whose offenses in Tampa were never more than mediocre. He won a title via the defense Tony Dungy built and because Bill Callahan has the common sense of a tree stump.
Because he's on TV, and people think he knows what he's talking about. I would file him under the least inspiring hire we could find.

In something like 11 seasons he won his division like 5 times and won a SB. He also turned around a crappy Raiders team. Thats about as good a resume as we will be able to find.
But, I'd be open to a first time coach too. In theory, Mac was a decent choice until it became apparent he stuck to a rigid scheme, had poor communication skills and tried to undermine certain players.
If we can get a guy with a flexible offense, excellent communication skills and somebody who has their pulse on the team - I'm on board.

I would be very happy with John Harbaugh or Arians but Arians will likely retire if he is fired.
Hire him as OC or QB coach then. I don't want him as a head coach.

He's thought off as a great offensive coach (which is probably overstating it a good bit: the 1999 Oakland Raiders is the only top 5 offense Gruden has ever HC'd) which is why his name keeps coming up.
But he's been out of the coaching game for nearly 8 years now.
He might have the notion of coming back in the back of his mind, but like Cowher I think the work/live balance will always mean that the opportunity won't be right.
Gruden gets discussed every year - as does Cowher and each year they are still out of the league. Gruden last season was 2008 and people still refer to him as a QB guru and offensive genius.
Jim Fassel was pretty good with QB's and he went to a SB, and I doubt anyone would sign up for him.
So its somewhat disingenous to only look at the Bucs, which were obviously stacked when he arrived... but were old and untalented towards the end of his tenure too.
I'm also not concerned about him being stale - unlike Cowher who i see vacationing on Bald Head Island for most of every summer.. he's seemed to have stayed a lot closer to the game, to the young QBs and college game/trends,etc. And his brother is an active head coach and son is on that staff too so just seems like he'd be a lot better positioned off a layoff than Cowher would.
But obviously his ego is likely off the charts too and he's not a guy i'd roll the red carpet as far as giving him GM AND COACH duties to... so if there's a match there, i'm supportive. If not, there will be other good candidates.
Wasn't Reich a college teammate of Boomer's? I'd be careful of Boomer's take on Reich - it's likely to be a bit biased by friendship.
Gruden is never going to win another title as coach. He might still be able to right the ship, restore order, even get the Giants to the playoffs. That would be an improvement. If you just want a "competitive" team, he'll give you that.
I give the Giants credit for trying to get a young coach on the rise when they hired Ben McAdoo. They were looking for a guy who would coach a long time and bring them the next title. It didn't work out, but it was the right idea. Unfortunately those guys are high-risk/high-reward. With McAdoo we saw the risk part. A retread like Gruden has less downside but also less upside.
Tom Coughlin was the big exception. Notably, he'd never won a title with the Jags. IIRC no head coach has ever won a Super Bowl with two different teams.
Bwhahahahahahahaha. Those names are more inspiring thsn a rested Gruden that has the itch to come back? Bwhahahahahahahahahaha

Make it stop. Gruden would be a very uninspiring pick.

Only bill parcells would inspire Greg. And it has to be the parcells of 1989 with the hair and the short shorts. And that's ok.
Ravens would be insane to can harbaugh. Ain't happening.
Isn't that what we've looked for?
I think Gruden had a 5-11 season and a 4-12 season with the Bucs.I'm sure we'd all be happy with that.
So I'd put my money on McDaniels or Mike Smith. Unfortunately. Hate Mike Smith. Very average coach. IMO
