What will make the next coach successful?

Reale01 : 12/5/2017 1:18 pm
I think it is about getting a head coach who can assemble a great COACHING STAFF. Hire top guys as assistants. We can talk all we want about the next head coach, but the fate of the Giants will rest on the type of coaching staff he is able to put together. The Eagles, Vikings, Cowboys, and others do not go for the up and coming OC or DC who they will lose after a year if they are good. Getting a young head coach is fine, but surround them with proven coaches, who may have failed as head coaches, at key positions. Coaches like Schwartz, Marinelli, Shurmer, Sporano, Phillips, and Callahan are examples. Coaches like Dick Lebeau and Jimmy Johnson (Philly) are examples that kept their respective teams relevant for years. Coaches that might get fired this year would be a great place to start. I don't know who will get fired, but guys like John Fox (DC), Hugh Jackson (OC), Gase (OC), O'Brien, etc...
I think it is up to the head coach to set the tone and motivate. They should manage the games, and the season, get great coordinators and coaches to manage the X and O.
Personally, I would want great coaches at OC, DC, ST, OL, and DL. I think the coordinators are the brains of the team and the line coaches are the heart.

The single most important thing...

is a coach who can adapt a style to the players that he has. this takes into account drafts, free agents and backups who replace injured players.

Too many (most?) head coaches come with 'their scheme' and force it on players who lack the specialized skill to make it successful. I think this is the secret to Belichick's success

This....I feel this is what separates Belichick from the rest because if he adapts and overcomes.

different players psyches/personalities is key. You cant treat divas and lunch pail guys the same way all the time. some guys keep to themseves and do their jobs. others kneel down and go on Instagram. You have to bring them all together for one common goal.
I agree about adapting to players you have

I think being humble and learning from what others do is also a good attribute to have. IMO Coaching is more important in football than it is in any other sport. Good football coaches can develop schemes that accentuate the strengths and mask the weaknesses of their players.

I think you have to have an identity in mind and try to build a team that matches it with the correct players.

I get that Belichick can use a more chameleon approach; but the Patriots are a tough team to model things after.

I want someone to come in here and make a real commitment to being a strong, physical football team that wins in the trenches and plays defense. I want to be a run-first team that uses more play-action passing.

No more "pass to set up the run"

I want the Giants to be a hard team to play against.

Build the team from the inside out. Significant importance must be placed on the trenches.

And for fucks sake, LINEBACKERS. Prioritize them. They matter.
Better cohesion between how the head coach wants the team

to look/play and how the GM gets those type of players. One very legitimate criticism of Jerry is he seemed to be hung up on the blueprint that won 2 Super Bowls as opposed to recognizing how the game had changed. In addition, he didn't make the best use of resources for the particular coaches he had. One example of this is we won 2 Super Bowls with very little resources used at the LB position (outside of AP, who was an Accorsi signing). The game has changed... spread passing offenses require more talent and athletic ability at the LB position. Damn near everyone has pointed out that we waited too long to re-stock the OL when that was such an important part of the TC/Gilbride success. One of the greatest strengths of Bill Belichek has been his willingness to change with the game. Just because he had a ton of success with LBers that looked like Tedy Brushci didn't prevent him from getting guys like Jamie Collins when the sport changed.

who can evaluate talent and find quality depth on day 3 of the draft.

It's not just about adapting the system to the players you have...
Dan in the Springs : 12/5/2017 2:14 pm : link
it's also about adapting the plans to the opponents you face. We've seen what happens when you build a system around players on the roster. You need a team of coaches and coordinators that can decide on Sunday night what they want to do the next week, which might be a 180 degree turn from what they did the week before, and find a way to execute it in a few days prep time.

Maximizing the talent you have gets you a good team. A better team adapts to who they face.

But the bottom line is execution. All the plans in the world go for naught when your prep fails to turn into execution.

You cannot be tied to a system , have the Flexibility to adapt your personnel and game plan to your opponents.
Make sure you and your GM are on the same page and gives you the tools to succeed.
