FA OLs, LBs, RBs On the Radar?

adamg : 12/5/2017 5:16 pm
I was looking at 2018 FAs today to see who we might go after in FA with Casillas, Shepppard, Thomas, and Robinson all set to hit FA; Vereen and Darkwa are both FAs; and Fluker, Pugh, and Richburg are all gone.

I know OLB Telvin Smith was a name on a lot of people's lips early on, but he already signed a huge four year 11 mill per year extension with Jacksonville in October.

Nate Solder has been mentioned lately as a potential pick up, but it seems unlikely the Pats will just let him get away.

Luckily the RB market looks like it should be good, though we may use a pick plus a Darkwa re-sign to hold it down.

But I was most interested in getting other people's opinions on the FA market and who they think we should have in mind to target when free agency opens up in March. I was especially hoping people would address these three areas of need that seem most paramount to shoring up our roster. Thoughts?
What's wrong with the Linebackers

Who is the one Giants FA you would spend money on I can’t think of one help me please? Then consider only an ass whole wants to join a sinking ship even for Big money.

Nothing, Jerry.
Anthony Hitchens
Breeze_94 : 12/5/2017 6:22 pm : link
is a good young LB from Dallas that is a good fit in a 4-3 and has excellent coverage skills. I think he can be had for a reasonable price and he will likely be available because Dallas has some cap issues.

But, then again, no one even knows what type of scheme or philosophy the Giants will have on defense next year. They could switch to a 3-4 defense for all we know.
As for the OL
Breeze_94 : 12/5/2017 6:27 pm : link
The Tackles in FA are HORRIBLE.

Solder is the only starting caliber LT, but he has regressed severely this season. If you have the time, search his name on twitter and read some of the things Pats fans and beat writers are saying about his play. He is the equivalent of Ereck Flowers in NE (They know how to scheme to help him better though).

The rest of the guys are swing tackles or depth guys. A lot of teams are seeing the shortage of OL in the league and locking their guys up.

I think a good option could be exploring a trade for a guy like Cordy Glenn in Buffalo.

Oline in free agency
Big_Pete : 12/5/2017 7:15 pm : link
Having looked at what is likely available in free agency this year, this is what I would be looing at next offseason.

Resign Pugh as RT, Fluker as RG

Bring in Andrew Norwell as the key free agency signing.

That gives us an OL of Pugh, Fluker, Jones, Norwell and Flowers with Wheeler, Halapio, Bisnowaty and Hart for depth.

In the draft I would look to bring in an OT and C to develop behind the starters.

I looked through Spotrac already. That's why I made the thread. There aren't many guys that pop off the screen except at RB. That Carolina OLG sounds like an interesting guy to bring in.

And it does seem like bringing back Pugh and Fluker may be necessary if we want progress on the line.

Hitchens is a good call too.
I’d look at
WillVAB : 12/5/2017 8:30 pm : link
Jon Bostic and Zach Brown at LB. both relatively young and probably won’t command a ton of money.

OL is slim pickings. I’d only consider paying for Swanson and Shwenke at Center.

The Giants need to be smart this off season. Find value in FA and use the draft to rebuild deficient areas.

Pugh is going to look to get paid because there is not much out there.
Not sure with his injury history to pay him top dollar.
Draft a tackle and guard in the 2nd and 3rd.
I hope Fluker is back at RG
Rjanyg : 12/5/2017 9:18 pm : link
Blue Houston RB might be an interesting player. Hitches is a good choice. Jonathan Cooper for LG. There are players out there, the just have to look pretty hard and so their homework.
I like Zach Brown
adamg : 12/5/2017 9:54 pm : link
I was shocked he got less than 3 mill from the skins. If they can lock him up for 3 years at under 12 mill, that'd be a steal imo.

Alfred Blue doesn't have impressive numbers. I know he's behind Miller, but I think there are a lot of better choices in FA at RB.

And I think re-signing Pugh is a necessary move. Yes, he'll cost a lot, but he's among the best OL players hitting FA. I don't know a better player who's going to be on the market. PErsonally, I like bringing back in Pugh and Fluker and drafting Billy Price in round 2. And have Price battle with Jones for OC. Price ought to be a big upgrade at the center position and hopefully would help stabilize the line.

Flowers-FA-Price-Fluker-Pugh may be good enough.

So we re-sign Pugh, Fluker and a LG? I hope we have enough cap room for that.

If Fluker can be had for a similar deal to Jerry, I think it's doable.

Pugh's cap hit this year was around 9 mill, so I imagine a long term deal could be structured where the cap hit isn't significantly more.

+1

It already was, and likely 3 unless they nab 2 immediately, and 1-2 none Giant FAs. When JR didnt draft OL in round 1 and 2/3 last year, that was the ultimate doom for this season. Most of all we need to use draft picks for young legs AND cap management. FA is to supplement.

Riley Rieff as well
Kevin Zeitler was the only FA OL that interested me last year
Milton : 12/8/2017 10:39 pm : link
What kind of year has Zeitler had? Was he worth the money he was given ($12M/year, I think)? A quick Google shows that he received the Ed Block courage award from the Browns for fighting through a thumb injury all season.

I also liked Fluker once he was released (based solely on my love affair with him leading up to the 2013 draft). And before Marshall was signed, Robert Woods was the WR I had my eye on.

And speaking of Fluker and Marshall, neither was an UFA. My point being that OLs, LBs, and RBs not currently listed as UFA will become free agents over salary cap issues (and others currently listed as UFA will be re-signed before hitting the open market). It's premature to get worked up over who will and won't be available, the landscape will change between now and March.
