Revisiting the 2016 coaching search

Looking back, it never really felt like a search. “Dog & pony show” was how it was described by asshats here. It seems like it was McAdoo all along, but these other candidates were interviewed:

Steve Spagnuolo
Doug Marrone
Mike Smith
Adam Gase
Teryl Austin

I also think they may have tried to interview Hue Jackson but he cancelled.

The search felt half assed from the get go, and I wonder how authentic it was. The main priority seemed to be continuity for Eli. Looking back, hiring a coach off an existing losing staff never seems like a good idea.

This feels different. It feels like a true search which is exciting, no existing situation will influence who is hired. I could definitely see Smith & Austin interviewed again.

Half-assed. There seemed to be a real premium on continuity, which feels ass backward. When things are bad enough that you’re firing the HC, continuity should probably be more of a dirty word than it is a requirement.

The eagles hired a LESS inexperienced and qualified coach. Pederson had two years of experience as a coordinator, and didn't even call plays while doing so.

He puts them all on the right path and doesn't spend the whole time talking about Johnny Unitas, the Baltimore Colts, and John Elway. Oh and his time as a Baltimore sports writers. You can't forget that.

Hopefully, and I think EA will tell him: John, any qualified GM candidate is gonna want HIS guy as HC, and likely lots more control than you've given. You need to trust your GM, and HC more.
The rest is up to JM and Tisch.

TTH, at least Pederson was in the NFL as a player and involved in meetings and gameplans. McAdoo had no such experince.

Parting ways with Coughlin was tough for Mara. Â

I think he let emotion blind him, hence the desire to return most of the coaching staff, promote from within, and offer Coughlin an advisory position.

It really seemed that the Giants felt like they had to fire Coughlin for the sake of making a move after three losing seasons, but weren't really ready to turn the page. They really should have parted ways with Reese at that point and let a new GM choose his own coach.

Mara should have cleaned house in 2016 when he said that the change form TC to Mack was really Jerry's Fault.And Reese continued to neglect parts of the roster that needed serious upgrades (O-line and linebacker). If not for the free agent signing that bolstered the defense last year this team could have easily finished 5-11 instead of 11-5. The problem was there all along and Mara was afraid to pull the trigger on Reese.

And I'm sorry, but Mara blaming TC's firing on Reese is another example of him passing the buck. He told us it was his decision to fire TC and to keep Reese. If Reese was on the firing line in 2015, why allow him to fire and hire the HC?

Mara is full of shit, and I don't trust him to make the right choices.

I think he meant after 2015. Or in JAN 2016. I think they should have canned Reese along with TC too
