The defense under him hasn't been good two of the three years he's been back. Way back in the seventies despite a crappy offense the defense remained stout. Spags hasn't demonstrated he can muster HIS guys to stand strong.
Its like the people saying Reese is definitely not getting fired. If the team responds positively he definitely has a shot:
Ownership likes him
Players like him
He's now become a "Giants guy"
He has HC and DC experience
You have to admit he checks a lot of boxes, and he is lower risk since you know him already
Well, the next 4 games could determine his chances. The biggest problem with this season has been effort and attitude, especially with the defense. We have talent on that side of the ball but the production isn't there. I think if the defense shows more fight and the offense can actually score some points and the team looks competitive and wins 1 or 2 of the last 4 games Spags could be a legitimate candidate.
Mara used the phrase "wholesale changes" repeatedly in his remarks.
I like Spagnuolo, but I think he's of the mind to rebuild the staff from the ground up. And if it makes sense to include Eli in the ground up rebuild, so be it. But I dont think he, or anyone, knows the answer to that question yet.

All good points.
As the HC, he'd oversee everything. So who he decides to bring in as an OC and DC, which would be talked about in an interview, is key.
Being a HC IMO is more about communication and organization, and projecting forward...........
Then again, a new GM has to be allowed to make this choice and I'm pretty sure that person will want a complete strip down of current staff. I'd hope anyway.
By all accounts, Spags was a bad head coach in St. Louis Â
his defenses have been bad here a lot of the time, and they were all-time bad when he was in New Orleans. The only thing he has going for him are that he's been here. I doubt the new GM is going to keep him on, or even the new HC will keep him on staff.

The players did play their asses off for him all the way to the end. Not something people seem to recall, either then or now.
And it helps him land a gig somewhere else. Sams with SUlly. We need a complete infusion of new blood and ideas. I don't even want Gettleman back with us, I want something new
I think Spags has the potential to be a good HC. I don't think he'll get the job, though he was a lot more of the reason for the 11 wins last year than McAdoo was, and if the team responds to him these remaining games, who knows...
You go through the process and see what happens.
But you have to assume the preference is to start fresh. New GM hires his guy to coach, drafts his QB, and fresh start across the board.
After the Mac debacle, I also think what the key players think Â

Um, because he was an historically bad HC who alienated his players when he was in that role? And has had as many awful seasons as DC as he has had good ones. Hopefully those aren't the boxes they're looking to check.

Much quieter practice under Spags: No music after stretching. Spags spent most of his time with the defense, including the same 1-on-1 work he's always done.

Odell Beckham Jr in #NYG locker room. Is out of boot, beat that timetable. Tells me next step is get full mobility back then balance & strength.
media savvy than McAdoo. More charmismatic and more interesting to listen to.
It's not much, but I wouldn't say it's nothing either.
A head of cabbage would have been more media savvy than McAdoo.
I wouldn't trust Spagnuolo as far as I could throw him. While McAdoo undermined himself, I don't think Spagnuolo did much to help the situation. He wanted the job himself.
it will be interesting to see the Offense this week
because Spags said in press conference he really hasn't paid attention to offense this year because he was DC
he is still going to be DC so he is going to be relying on Sullivan
to the point where it could be argued that this week the offense will be 100% Sullivan
So I am VERY VERY curious to see if there are any changes this week in terms of play calling and schemes ..

So the Giants will hire another assistant off a losing staff?
