Wonder what happens with Marshall after this year. I believe we can save about ~5M in cap space if we cut him.
I'd kind of like to see him stay and get another shot here next year but there are obvious reasons why NYG would view it as more logical to cut ties.
in his limited action this year he sure didn't look very impressive
He didn't - but this team was an absolute mess from jump street and he got banged up in the preseason.
There are several reasons why I feel like the ~4 games we saw him play probably aren't a good indication.
The drop in the Lions game was really bad. But he didn't even see a look in the Dallas game until the very end.
I'm a little biased - I like the guy and want to see him make amends for a disappointing 2017 here. But cap-wise, it probably makes more sense to cut ties.
I'll preface by saying I was strongly in favor of the signing. While he didn't look great at the beginning of the season, it seemed like he was starting to come on before his injury. At the same time, I recall several Monday morning QB articles, with film shots, indicating opportunities where Marshall had gotten open and was either missed or not the read by Eli. On top of all of that, new guy in the system, poor line play, general broken-ness of the offense, etc. - I just feel like it's hard to make any determination on him.
TL;DR I don't think we saw enough and I'd be interested in bringing him back at the right price.
I actually think (gut feeling) Marshall is due for a bounce back year. It could very well be his last. I think the stink of this year is not how he would want to be remembered. His career has been very up and down. I think he has value if healthy.
his deterorating skills are questionable. If hes willing to re-neg down, invite him back to camp. Another reason tho btw we need an experienced HC who can handle different personalities...
"in his limited action this year [Beckham] sure didn't look very impressive"
Really? Guy played on a bum ankle for 3 1/2 games, caught 3 TDs, averaged about 7 catches and 75 yards a game (again, hurt). He made a TD catch in Philly that was one of the most magnificent catches you'll ever see. The Giants offense has been one of the worst in NFL history since he left.
Yes, his shitty, knucklehead behavior gives reason to pause before committing long-term to him. Question his behavior if you must, but don't question the talent. In the brief snapshot of him we saw in 2017 and considering his health, I thought the Beckham we saw on the field was pretty impressive...
being a poor fit for Eli's skills, I don't think it matched Marshall's any better.
I don't see how you can evaluate anyone's skills with this offense, no running game, no pass blocking and no screen game. This all thanks to JR as he was unable or unwilling to put any value into RB's or O-lineman!

I could be wrong, but I always pictured Marshall as more of a downfield, go up and get it, kind of player.
I don't see the problem with giving Marshall another shot. It's like we have some world beaters behind him that we'd be benching. Unless they draft Anthony Miller... but that's my own personal dream that is just not likely to happen.
Hard to really get a good evaluation on much of anyone who has played on this team this season.
Even Landon Collins has seemed to take a step back - though it has been reported that he has been playing through a HAS.
I'm not necessarily advocating to bring him back. I'm just not sure I can take much from what I saw from him in just 1/4 of a season on a new team under these circumstances.
He couldn't have been less impressive. Invisible when he wasn't dropping passes. Time to move on. Engram should be out there anyway. He's not a TE in any real sense and has the skills/speed to be a WR.

Using Engram as a TE off the line is exactly how you utilize the mismatches he presents against linebackers in the middle of the field. None of them can cover him.
He's going to see plenty of snaps out wide - but there's no reason to treat him as a pure WR. It diminishes his value.
He's not a TE in any real sense and has the skills/speed to be a WR.
This could use some breakdown. Because it's nonsense and you should defend your point.
He's simply not big enough (236) to block at the end of the line like the average 250+ lb TE does. He's limited to being schemed to block safeties and the occasional LB. I think the Giants would be better served with he, Shepard and OBJ as the WRs and Adams/Ellison as the TEs. He could take Marshall's spot and the Giants could concentrate on upgrading other (OL!) positions
Engram is a mismatch against CB as well. Runs 4.4s at 6'3" 236! That's legit WR speed in and over sized package. And I'm not saying 100% of the time on the outside but he's a liability at the end of the line as a blocker.
OBJ, Shepard, Engram at WR, Ellison/Adams at TE and they're set. The way it is now we're overloaded at TE and have a hole at WR. That's my take anyway.
it's one less hole to fill in the draft that can be used at another position.
I would agree with this. Heading into the season, a #2 WR was a huge need. It was a fatal one the previous season. Getting Engram mitigates that somewhat but I'd rather not being counting on a Lewis or King if I could help it.
Agree with you - we just don't know. I went back to the ESPN box scores for games 1-4, where targets for Marshal were 4, 5, 11, and 10. So they barely threw his way the first two games. I remember that wondering what was going on and what the plan was.

If you believe that his weight is a flaw, it's an incredibly correctable one. Jeremy Shockey played at 250. If sixteen pounds is the make or break between 'can play on the LOS' and 'can't', it's not really a big concern. With his frame, that's nothing.
Is it coincidental that these guys showed up in the locker room right after McAdoo was fired ..... I have a feeling someday their is going to be a tell all about this season because the way everything has gone down to me something smells...

Spotrac: Potential Out: 2018, 1 yr, $5,468,750; $1,000,000 dead cap
What a stupid take. How in the world do you figure that, because Myers stayed healthy?

I agree - it didn't seem like a good fit for him.
So, I'd like to see who we hire and what type of system they'll want to implement. It's possible it is a better fit.
My guess is the next guy will want to move on. But hey, who knows.

I agree. When your big flanker does not want to take the contact any more he's no longer an asset.

Marshall was garbage before he got hurt. Keep that poster boy for losing off this team.

I liked the Marshall signing, but no sense in throwing good money after bad. I don't see Marshall on the roster next year.
