If Eli is released...

NorwoodWideRight : 12/6/2017 3:48 pm
If, for financial reasons, or because a new head coach wants to go in a different direction, or because Eli has under-performed and is no longer worth the contract price -- basically, for any reason.... Would you be okay with that? Would you protest/pay for billboards or anything else along those lines?

What set of circumstances leading up to Eli's release would you be okay with? What would the Giants have to do to appease you in order to make Eli's release more palatable?
Whoever the new GM and coach are,
Go Terps : 12/6/2017 3:50 pm : link
they have to be given the opportunity to build the team as they see fit. If that means a different quarterback, so be it.

But I don't think you can hire people to lead the organization and then tell them they have to keep any particular player.
It was the messenger & the fact Geno took over..
Sean : 12/6/2017 3:50 pm : link
We’ve all seen Geno & no one likes McAdoo.

It’s very likely a new HC will want a new QB.

this is a business...elis time may be up here. all we can do is be thankful for the memories and look forward to a new era of giants football. personally id like eli back in 2018, but if the new regime wants a new QB, im okay with him starting day 1 of 2018. i am a firm believer in guys learn by playing. draft darnold and take some lumps in 2018 and 2019 we could be set up like the current day eagles. again not happy if eli goes, but its part of the business. its not like eli is in his prime, so if the new regime feels its time, then im cool with it
I will understand it. Eventually the team will have to go
Section331 : 12/6/2017 3:51 pm : link
in a different direction, but a lot of it depends on how it goes down. If they're drafting a QB, and rebuilding from ground up, I get it. But if they go half way and sign some scrub vet and tell us that we'll compete for the SB, then I'll be pretty pissed.

BrettNYG10 : 12/6/2017 3:51 pm : link
If the Giants choose to move on from Eli in the off-season, I'm fine with that. I'll be upset, but understand. The handling of his benching last week was abominable - but I always fine if they chose to release or trade him in the off-season.
Basically..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/6/2017 3:52 pm : link
the shitstorm Mac created almost relieves the need to release eli in a certain manner.

What needs to be learned in all this is just communicate properly and it will all be OK.

The point that's been muddied is that almost the entire fiasco could've been averted had they prepped Webb to get snaps and just made the substitution in a middle of a game from Eli to Webb without fanfare. People will understand that, especially in a 2-10 season.

In the end - it actually works out well for Eli. If he's wanted by the new staff to stay, he probably can. If he's not, he can leave knowing the gratitude that has been shown by fans and former players.
If we were getting a couple #1 picks

I would be OK with it.
it almost makes it easier
Rocky369 : 12/6/2017 3:54 pm : link
regardless of when/why/how that we've already seen him benched. we've had the shock that he's no longer the guy, so when it happens next year, or the year after, or whenever, everyone will at least have an easier time of it.
New GM and coach have to be given the oppurtunity
nygiants16 : 12/6/2017 3:58 pm : link
To do what they see as the best for the team and that will be part of the interview process as well..

Mara will have to ask gms what they are going to want to do with eli..

I could see get coaches or gms wanting to keep Eli and younger wanting to go with the draft pick
The only reason I would have a problem is it is a bigger cap hit
Matt M. : 12/6/2017 3:58 pm : link
to do that prior to 2018 than after.
Release Eli?
Alwaysblue22 : 12/6/2017 4:00 pm : link
Only if he agrees in writing to a non-competition agreement that would bar him from ever playing for the Dallas Cowboys. You know that if Dak Prescott gets hurt or Jerry Jones's patience wears thin that he will sign Eli. That is rub it in your face Jerry Jones.
Eli is only not on the Giants next year if he asks for a trade

If Eli wants to leave then I will be fine if they let him go
Jay on the Island : 12/6/2017 4:07 pm : link
I am hoping that they take a QB in the first round and keep Eli for another year to serve as the veteran mentor. I completely understand if he doesn't want that and wants to go to a team like Jacksonville who is a QB away from contention. If the Giants do right by him I will be fine with the situation.

I just hope they bring in a stop gap veteran like a Josh McCown.
I am fine with the Giants cutting him
larryflower37 : 12/6/2017 4:36 pm : link
Have a press conference thanking Eli for his service but we need to get younger and give Eli the opportunity to chase another SB.
He did not deserve to sit on the bench and watch Geno Smith start.
The camera flashing to Eli on every play Geno made or didn't make was painful.
I think people will be surprised how many coaches would want to keep
JCin332 : 12/6/2017 4:44 pm : link
him...Gruden has already weighed in on that...

If he is released, although I agree with PP this is unlikely, I will be bitter because of the shit talent they surrounded him with late in his career...

I don't believe it is. At least two ex-head coaches said coming into this job they would prefer to have the guy drafted in April sit behind Eli for 2 years.
I think

Mara tells the new GM:" You own Eli as starter for at least '18...if not '19 if he performs well".
Mara has to do more face-saving from this recent debacle by having Eli still the starter for, at a very minimum, we owe him that. If Eli sucks then fans will understand a change, especially without the pressure of the Streak at risk as well.
If Eli is released, the PR will be twice the Débâcle's.
The only way fans will be OK is if he requests it, or signs off on a trade(just don't expect great draft position from it).
That would be my reaction.

joeinpa : 12/6/2017 5:34 pm : link
There is no chance Mara would do that.

If Eli would be willing to stay knowing a young high draft pick is waiting in the wings, that d be great; don t believe Eli wants that. He probably believes he has two + years to play. He won t get that chance with the Giants.

Eli is a great Giant, but other greater quarterbacks have been shown the door when they still has some years left.
If
mattyblue : 12/6/2017 6:04 pm : link
an opportunity for Eli to play somewhere and he wants to continue for any extended amount of time he has to take it. If the Giants draft a QB first round we will have two young QBs right behind him. He chased out Warner and he knows what it will be like for him. However, if he just wants to play next year with the understanding that he would be on a shorter leash than ever before he will stay. I think it comes down to what he plans on doing after 2018.
I am okay with it...
Dan in the Springs : 12/6/2017 6:41 pm : link
in fact, I expect it. I can't imagine a new regime wanting to come in and deal with an ugly transition from Eli to another QB any time soon.

On second thought - it might not happen if they don't really make many changes to the coaching staff. If they pretty much keep it intact - hire Spags and keep Sully, then I expect Eli will be back.

In that case I think we would continue to struggle on offense, because I don't have any confidence that Sully will build a great offense that we'll be able to execute.
Nope
Bernie : 12/6/2017 7:00 pm : link
and I think everyone should just assume Eli will no longer be a New York Giant once the clock hits 0:00 at the end of the Redskins game on 12/31. All great things come to an end at some point.

Um, what? For a 37 year old QB with $33MM/2yrs?

Whatever you're smoking, please share it.

Ah, opinions stated as fact are the best. You may well end up being right, but you don't know that at all. None of us know who the new GM or HC will be, what kind of offense they'll be running, whether they're embracing a full tear-down/rebuild, etc.

In other words, what you're hoping for is not in any way a certainty. So saying it like it is a certainty is ridiculous.

Gruden, who was playing to a popular sentiment, and who else? And even Gruden didn't say 2 years.

This wishful thinking shit has to stop.
You realize, if Eli is released
Bill L : 12/6/2017 7:47 pm : link
We consign ourselves to the top pick In the 2019 draft as well. Which is alright by me actually. Just so long as we’re reconciled to it. Darnold/Rosen won’t be ready and there’s no better interim QB that would take a one year let’s win contract. Especially not one who is better than Eli. In your haste to jettison him, you lose out on the BPA if you want to succeed next year.
I wouldn't bet on Eli being released...
Slade : 12/6/2017 7:53 pm : link
Part of the thinking behind bringing in Ernie was to help with this PR disaster... Ernie's love for Eli is well documented and they have a bond. The McAdoo Asterisk will go down in infamy... They are hoping for a happy ending. They want to restore the class in which the organization has prided itself on.

Is that what happened to the Eagles when they took Wentz? What about the Bucs when they took Winston? Or the Giants when they took Eli?

Unless he decides to retire. No sign he'll do that either.
Tough question
WillVAB : 12/6/2017 10:11 pm : link
Personally I’d like to see a commitment to him and then trade down for a king’s ransom. I think that’s the smart play short and long term — the picks would provide the new GM with a ton of ammo to infuse the team with cheap, young talent and get the Giants right back in the mix. Long term, this isn’t the last year QBs are allowed to be drafted. I’m not really in love with any of the prospects this year and the Giants could use an acquired pick to take a QB in the future.

If the organization decides to move on from Eli, they better have a plan and do it this off-season. Use the savings this year and in future years to sign/extend the right guys. The QB you take in the draft better be a franchise QB. The “both” option makes no sense from Eli’s perspective of the long-term health of the franchise.

Whatever the case, this is the first decision the new GM is going to be faced with and it’s not an easy call. Whatever he decides to do will be compared with the alternative (Eli vs new QB) for years to come.
I want
Rolyrock : 12/6/2017 10:22 pm : link
him to retire a Giant.
But if forced, draft a QB, and gulp trade Eli for draft pic(s)

saves 10M in cap in each of the next 2 years......if this team is not a contender next year, why have Eli? He is not part of the rebuilding process...and I seriously doubt he wants to be part of a rebuilding process...
