NFT: The Godfather or The Godfather Part II?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 12/6/2017 8:08 pm
Got a nasty cold so I took today off. AMC is running the trilogy and while I've seen all of them more times than I can count, I'm always drawn in. While Part III is a good film, the first two are probably in the top ten of all time in cinema.

I'm partial to the original, but what say you BBI?
The book the Godfather

Is part one plus all the good flashback stuff from part 2... read the book... its an all-time great book
I liked the first movie alot... It was the best
est1986 : 12/6/2017 8:20 pm : link
And I think the second one was OK, I liked the flashback stuff but I think I liked the third movie better than the second

(TV I think) where they rearranged I & II in chronological order. It's amazing.

HBO did it. You can probably still watch it. It was awesome.

I think my fav is #2.

To the guy who said #3 - sorry you lost your head coaching job this week, but you donít have to ruin the giants message board too.
That's easy

#1 had Brando, #2 didn't.

Case closed.

DeNiro and Pacino at their best.

And Cazale was the best of them all.

Better than II. I could never really get into the second to be honest.
Pacino in I

I thought was the greatest acting Iíve ever seen in going from Mikey to The Godfather in a few hours
II is just about my favorite movie

The flashback scenes to the young Vito are fantastic. I love watching them because it's like a window into the world that my great-grandfather lived in when he came from Italy to NYC in 1913.
First one has the charm and is more accessible so to speak
djm : 12/6/2017 10:10 pm : link
Second one does all the work. Apples and oranges in many ways. And both set the standard. They are great on their own or as complements to each other.
Partial to the original

It has everything, not that 2 wasn't great. I agree on the Brandon comment. It often said people are made for roles. Can you imagine any actor of any era delivering that performance?
I talked with Mario Puzo

several times. His son, Joey was in some of my high school classes. I worked at a local bookstore in a mall and I would approach him in a way to not let other customers know about who he was.

We spoke about Joey and books in general. He was a nice man. (Short guy).

it wasn't and HBO thing

An all-American mutt - an Italian grandfather, a southern grandmother whose ancestors came here hundreds of years ago, and my mom's family is almost all Irish (one German in there)

My ancestors, too, though, sadly, some of mine were much more nefarious than yours were (see my great-grandfather's wiki link below).

My great-grandfather... - ( New Window )
Love I & II, but I definitely have to go with the original.
Section331 : 12/7/2017 9:40 am : link
The ending scene, with Michael "taking care of business" while serving as godfather in a baptism ceremony is one of the finest in cinematic history. That and Marlon Brando puts it over the top for me.
I did not like the Godfather saga
Joey from GlenCove : 12/7/2017 9:45 am : link
I 100% would not recommend watching it as your first
or 2nd viewing.

i really took away from part 2

Wow....from Corleone, even! My family came from Northern Italy, a few villages near the border between Liguria and Emilia-Romagna.

Funny story - my Italian grandfather HATES The Godfather because he gets his back up about anything that ties Italians to the mob. My dad told me that, at my parent's wedding, the band played the theme from the Godfather when his parents were introduced at the reception (the movie was hot stuff at the time, this was 1974) and my grandpa hit the roof. "That's not an Italian song - it's a song about criminals!"
try watching
GFiLA : 12/7/2017 10:16 am : link
The Godfather Epic. They take both 1 and 2 plus some unseen footage and splice them in chronological order.
2 is my favorite.
Beezer : 12/7/2017 10:21 am : link
1 is hard to beat.

I'm not as annoyed with 3 as many, but it clearly isn't the film the others are. It does allow a great story to play out, so I give it leeway there.

Greg - My mom has NEVER talked about that side of her family. She always said that her mother (my grandmother) grew up without a father but she never would say why, just that he died young. I've learned what I have from other relatives and the internet. But nothing ever from my mom.

As an aside, my great grandfather's brother (Cyro) was known as the "Artichoke King" which is a pretty good nickname.

Just re-watched The Godfather
mrvax : 12/8/2017 5:36 pm : link
for the 1st time in almost 40 years. Back when it came out in '72 I was only 12 so I probably saw it when I was 18. It was very good.

Question: The long scene when Michael Corleone traveled to Sicily, got married and his wife died in a car bomb, was that during the time he was in hiding after he went to Los Vegas? He was sporting a bruise under his left eye that he may have gotten from the corrupt police Chief.

I'm going to watch part 2 soon.

Eric from BBI: Get with the the program or I'll have to make you an offer you can't refuse!

He's in hiding after killing the cop and Sollozzo.

OK, thanks. Did he go there straight away then to Vegas or the other way around?
