I have never seen here a definitive explanation of who does/is responsible for/has the authority to make what decisions in the inner circle of personnel. Confusion seems to abound over the roles of John Mara/Chris Mara/Jerry Reese/Marc Ross, etc. It's amazing that with people on the management team coming and going over the years, the true story has never come out. Or has it?

Their drafts have been marginal at best, this season was inevitable. The housecleaning has just begun, perhaps Mara's should remain further in background like they did with George Young.

Saying that he is ultimately responsible is the politic thing to say. It's like Eli saying that he's responsible for how a game turns out. But those statements hide, more than reveal, the truth and particulars. If the buck totally stopped at Reese, with him gone should we expect totally different results, or will the existing infrastructure just carry on like the "deep state", lol?
If that's the case, swapping Reese out with another GM who doesn't demand more authority won't change very much.
If Reese's role was toothless because his Boss forced his hand on decisions, then shame on him for allowing things he felt was not in the best interest of the team to be executed.
And as you say Bill...good luck to the next guy.

yeah, Jimmy, it could come down to a matter of personal/professional integrity. He had a great job title, good pay, social status in the big city. And up until this week he had great job security- most of us never believed they would ever fire him. Even if he had no real authority, there were plenty of reasons to suck it up and not rock the boat. Hopefully they get a guy with talent and balls to keep Chris and John out of football ops. But then again, John is doing the hiring, and if he like having his finger in the pie, he'll find someone who will keep it that way.
Beyond that, the Giants always said in the Coughlin years that decisions were handled between the JM-TC-JR triangle. TC absolutely had a significant say in personnel and scouting. He was a presence at the combine and he was in the draft day picture as a decider.
That's about all we can say we know.
