Eli's HOF Chances- Does This Past Week's Nonsense Matter?

CRinCA : 12/7/2017 9:05 pm
I realize there's been alot of BBI debate in recent years about Eli's shot of making the HOF. My personal/biased opinion is "hell yeah".

That said. I was curious if folks feel that all the b.s. over the past week is good/bad/neutral for his chances.

I realize it's 5-plus years away, but the voters remember all this shit- for better or worse. And hey, I just read where Eli's jersey sales jumped up dramatically in the past 2 weeks. Maybe that's a positive indicator in general.

Anyway, just throwing this our for conversation. Have at it.
No, but Eli deserves it way more than Phil

I’d say this - it was nice to see the outpouring of respect for Eli

from other players and media not associated with the Giants. Not sure what effect that may have on his HOF candidacy, if any, but it couldn’t have hurt.
Eli will get in

Eli has 50,635 K and 334 TDs and 2 SBs

Ben has 50,052K and 323 TDs and 2 SBs

I dont see how Ben gets in and Eli doesn’t. Yes Ben has less picks but those big ticket QBs numbers are nearly identical and in Elis favor with the 2 SB MVPs

Ultimately the Hall will not be able to disregard that
I do say that this whole thing helped Eli’s Hall Case

It made everyone acutely aware of his importance and significance

The outpouring was widespread and unanimous

It was the type of reaction one would expect if you bench a HOFer.
I don't understand how there's debate on this.

He's a HOF QB. 2 SB MVP's, top 10 in yards, TD's. 210 consecutive starts. NY Sports Legend. Classy. No brainer.
What will hurt Eli
EmpireWF : 12/7/2017 10:17 pm : link
is at no point in his career was he ever considered among the very best QBs in the league. His best performances was over two months of playoffs over his 13+ year career. If he does get in, it will be the Super Bowls that get him the votes. Nothing he has done since then will be more convincing.

I agree 100%
Eli is such a polarizing player ...

... and he has anti-NY bias working against him as well.

As far as his overall record goes - Joe Namath made it into the Hall of Fame with bad stats and one historic upset.

Eli has good stats and two historic upsets.

You mean same players that vote him as one of the most overrated qbs in the game?

importance and significance? I swore the Ginats were 2-10 and had not scored a td in 24 possessions.

He's not getting in.
The RS W-L record, picks/pick6s, decisions, QBR, incompletions, and any other knocks WE put on him, so do the voters.
It should have been different, and it would likely have been different to very different if JR had made more than ONE top 2 rounds OL pick his first 6 seasons, and/or better choices of OL with the picks he had the last 5.

But what happens next might. Eli shoilf be HOF, if he retired today.

He is a historic figure, on many fronts. I can't see a reasonable argument how he isnt HOF already
i think it helps
markky : 12/8/2017 6:12 am : link
if he had just continued playing and ended his career with a losing record (which was a real possibility if he played all of next season) i think he would have been screwed.

this debacle made it clear that he's been working inside of a broken organization and it ruined the last third of his career.

i think this helps him.
forget the regular season stats
Tuckrule : 12/8/2017 7:55 am : link
his playoff numbers overall are great. Comebacks, INT to TD ratio hes a sure fire HOFer
I think he would be a lock,
Doomster : 12/8/2017 8:48 am : link
if he were to go to another team, and lead them to the playoffs and beyond, by having a good OL in front of him.....it would validate what BBI has been saying for the last 6 years....

And by lock, I mean sooner than later.....

This knock on Namath is ridiculous, the guy changed the way the game was played, before him it was mostly 3 yards and a cloud of dust. He was the first college player to demand and get a huge bonus coming out and pretty much put the AFL on the map resulting in the merger. His affect on the NFL was gigantic and he was a great player.
I think it helps

in subtle ways. It also shines a light on what is arguably his most impressive statistic -- the 210 games started that would have been more, but for a HC with 28 games on his resume.

He's getting in. The haters will keep him off the 1st ballot, but he's getting in.
