NFT: Knicks Chat: Teams asking about Courtney Lee

Ex-Knick Chris Smith, the younger brother of J.R. Smith, has signed a 3-year deal with Israeli team Ironi Nahariya in the first division, league sources say. Smith, who was with the Knicks during J.R. Smith's tenure in New York, has also converted to Judaism. His agreement with Ironi Nahariya was first reported by David Pick. Daniel Hazan, Chris Smith's agent, helped him through the process of religious conversion, he says.

Around the league

Ingram 21, 7 and 6 (I was hard on him last season but the kid has really taken a step forward. He has a shot to be a very nice player, Ball gets all of the publicity but I'd take Ingram over Ball 10/10 times).

Ball 10, 8 and 8, 5-11 from the field, 3 steals, 4 blocks

Simmons 12, 13 rebounds, 15 assists.. WOW

Embiid 33, 7 and 6 with 5 blocks... it must be so much fun to be a Sixers fan right now

Bradley Beal is averaging 42.5 points per game over his last 2, 34/59 from the field, amazingly only 6 3's.

Warren 23 and 8, he's a nice player

Melo... 5-20!, might be unfair but the Melo is a loser narrative isn't being helped by the Thunder's 11-13 start... 33/19% over his last 5... yuck

Levert 21, 10 and 5 for BK

Mitchell 26, 4 and 4, kid can play

the Melo trade
Del Shofner : 12/8/2017 10:47 am : link
looks better and better.
I think it's unfair to say he's a loser,
Keith : 12/8/2017 10:47 am : link
but he's not a very good basketball player anymore. He cannot score like he used to, all he can do is shoot now. He does nothing else to help the team win games. In the past, when he'd score a ton in the paint, he helped his team.

Regarding Lee, it's a really tough spot. We have a good team and the chemistry is great. I would hate to break that up unless the offer was too good to refuse. YOu have to think long term, but that's a hard sell to the players.
Chris Paul
DanMetroMan : 12/8/2017 10:50 am : link
is still fucking awesome. He has to be top 5 all-time at PG right?
Dan, its hard to argue,
Keith : 12/8/2017 10:51 am : link
but when has he never won anything....or come close? This will be a defining year towards his legacy, IMO.
Yeah.. maybe it wasn't just NY
LawrenceTaylor56 : 12/8/2017 10:53 am : link
Maybe Melo isn't the all-star some fans (not so much here) thought he was. His problems are magnified now more than ever. Inconsistent, 6 jab-step chucker.
Melo used to be an elite scorer. He was a good shooter
Keith : 12/8/2017 10:57 am : link
he could take the ball to the rim, he could play with his back to the basket and he can face you up and play mid range. He could score in many different ways in his hayday. He never played defense and he never really played great team ball, but when you shoot close to the rim, it opens things up for everyone. As time went on, specifically after he hurt his knee, his shots were getting further and further from the basket. When he missed, the defense would get an easy rebound because everyone was standing on the outside watching him dribble for 20 seconds. Now he's taking long shots, he doesn't play defense and his game is not conducive to a team oriented offensive system. He's a bad bball player.

I mean Stockton didn't win a ring (yeah he made the finals). Nash never won a ring. Considering how unusual it is for a star to carry a team on his back alone I have a hard time dinging Paul too much. He's been consistently awesome for a very long time.

-3 time assist king (10th all-time)
-4 times with steals (16th all-time)
- 9 time all-star
3rd all-time in assists per game
6th all-time in PER

Yeah a ring might move him closer to mount rushmore but I think you are looking at Magic Johnson and Oscar Robertson and then a tier where Paul belongs.
It would have to be a pretty good offer for Lee
Heisenberg : 12/8/2017 10:58 am : link
He's really a leader on the team and an incredibly valuable guy who will absolutely do whatever the team needs.

To me it depends upon where you rank Cousy, Nash and IT, but he's sure right there. Great, great PG.

Without a doubt for me. All time great. Remember when he actually wanted to come to the Knicks? That Rockets team is really good.

Sixers/Lakers game was incredible last night. I know he missed the game winner, but Embiid is a force to be reckoned with. Holmes was also very impressive. Philly will be major players in the FA market.
Lee has played well
Jay on the Island : 12/8/2017 11:08 am : link
But I would like to see him dealt while he still has value once THJ returns.
When Melo was a top scorer,
Keith : 12/8/2017 11:10 am : link
he was shooting 35-40% of his shots from within 3 feet of the basket and 10-15% of his shots were 3 pointers. This year 11% of his shots are from within 3 feet and 38% of his shots are 3 pointers and his 3 pt % is no better than it was in his prime. Most of those shots are easily rebounded by the defense because the rest of the guys are watching him play with the ball.
It all depends upon what Lee could bring.
yatqb : 12/8/2017 11:11 am : link
Does a non-lottery #1 do it? Does a young piece do it?

Its a tough spot. I'm not sure he will lose any value unless he gets hurt. I think the knicks would be best suited to wait until the deadline to deal him. The guys in the lockerroom probably wouldn't be too happy if we dealt him. I understand that we need to do whats best for the team, long term, but what if we are a 5-6 seed at the time?

My thoughts as well. I was at the game last night with clients. Embiid was absolutely unstoppable in the 4th quarter. His touch got a big man is unbelievable. When I saw the final stat line on Simmons I was shocked. Quietest triple double I’ve ever seen. In fact, during the game I kept thinking “man Simmons is having an awful game”. If he can develop even a semi-respectable jumper the Sixers look destined to be the class of the Eastern Conference.

It's a tough choice but if they could get a 1st round pick for him it would be in their best long term interest to trade him. Even if they make the playoffs this team isn't ready to compete for a title.

Keith : 12/8/2017 11:39 am : link
Not to mention, we want to keep KP around long term. What message is that sending to KP?

If Lee is tradable now, he will be tradable at the deadline or in the offseason. He's a solid player on a solid contract

Yeah, when is Lebron gonna declare that Donovan Mitchell "should be a Maverick."

If I were GMEN46, I'd be starting Donovan Mitchell threads every day on here - so far he's 100 percent right. I still like Frank, but Mitchell looks great. Those Dwyane Wade pre-draft comps aren't so crazy. It's a shame Utah is such a non-starter for free agents - they run a great franchise and could be a legit contended if one star player got on board.

mitchell is two years older than Frank. While Mitchell and Tatum have been the two biggest impact players. Mitchell def has more NBA readiness with 2 years of college.

In Frank 3rd year in the NBA he will be the same age as Mitchell is now.

WTF are you talking about? I couldn’t care less to see you getting in a pissing match over players potential. Hindsight is always 20/20. Just interested to see how the chatter was on frank and other picks. Calm down.

GMEN46 : 12/8/2017 12:22 pm : link
To go back and look but I remember explaining myself that it wasn't about summer league. It was the improvement in shooting, work ethic, top flight defense, good shooting form and elite athleticism and the chance to be a superstar and having the pure desire and worth ethic to be great. 6'9 wingspan. And I was aboslutely ripped on here as someone who knows nothing about basketball talent, yada, yada.

Has been incredible but remember it's a marathon not a sprint. There's been a lot of guys who have burst on the scene strongly only to fade or plateau. Not saying that's the case with DM but it's still early.

You definitely have to consider the age factor with Frank but they are some concerning things- his explosiveness/ quickness/ first step and ability to finish at the hoop. Has he dunked yet?

I know he didn't play the other night but it got me thinking, does Mike Conleys game remind you of Frank? Conley has never been an explosive player and definitely struggled early in his career. He seems to improve every year though and would love if Frank turned out similar.

we should all be thrilled if Frank turns into Conley. My concern about the pick at the time was that there were guys available with higher ceilings than Conley.

It's a funny line, but a lot of people confuse sucking with rebuilding. The Knicks have sucked the past 15 years, but they haven't been rebuilding. No rebuilding team gives away first rounders to acquire vets with big contracts - they do the exact opposite. Trading Courtney Lee is the right thing to do, and I think KP is savvy enough to understand that.
