say the point is being missed and then type this shit:

My argument is that Beckham loves all of the extraneous things that come with being a sports celebrity more than actually being a sportsman

That's the EXACT point you keep insinuating - and it appears to be wrong. Do you know how difficult it is to stay at the top of one's profession? The other shit he's doing is no different than coming home from work and posting stuff on Facebook.

You can't seem to separate the two. That's on you - not Odell.
Get. Off. Beckham's. Back.

He works hard. His teammates love him. He's a generational talent and a celebrity in one of the biggest market's in the world. He's a good kid who needs to grow up a little. So get off his back and let him breathe. Btw, he's back at the facility rehabbing and ahead of schedule.

The way I look at it, he'd be a fool to not maximize his personality and charisma in off the field endeavors while he is still at the height of his career.

We all saw what happened to Shazier. Football is a brutal game and it can all be taken away in five seconds.
OBJ
darren in pdx : 12/8/2017 5:06 pm : link
is the reason why McAdoo became a head coach. Any offensive production has been a result of OBJ being on the field, and we've seen McAdoo's offense without OBJ. He's an easy target for the media, but I'd be upset to lose a player of his caliber because of that. If he can't fit the cap, that's understandable, but also disappointing to lose.
"he only cares about celebrity"
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/8/2017 5:18 pm : link
seems to be the common complaint of people who only know anything about the player through reading the rags.
The chances of Odell being traded are nil.
Mark C : 12/8/2017 6:46 pm : link
The chances of Odell staying off twitter, staying home at night, and getting fewer incomprehensible tattoos are probably slimmer.

The question is, what are the chances of hiring a head coach who commands enough respect that he can effectively get in Beckham's face and tell him to shut the fuck up when he's acting like he's in gym class with a substitute teacher?

when you don't have any legitimate color from the giants... please dont speak like your color is accurate... comments like this are just annoying.

"Let me let you all in on a little secret. The Giants aren't enamored with Beckham and see him as a necessary evil right now."

you don't have any secrets actually... you are relaying second hand stuff from people who are not related to the giants...
the same type of garbage that produces "asshattery" that the giants are going to draft Myles Jack... a guy who you were told by me time and again that IS NOT EVEN ON THEIR BOARD. But the GREAT contacts who have nothing to do with the giants told you that "little secret.".

also things like "he only wants to be a celebrity he doesnt want too be a productive player." ??? like i dont even know where to begin with that. that is lamer then the "bad teammate, doesnt work hard, should focus more on his craft nonsense".

the kid has a few things he needs to reign in and control... but lets not just make stuff up because it fits ones personal incorrect narrative about a guys work ethic and character.

or at least dont present it like a fact... or run with media garbage.

I have never been anything but transparent.

Combined with what I am told plus why when pressed John Mara didn't just answer that "anything is possible but Odell is a big part of our team and under contract" is how the narrative is shaped.

My comment was not that Odell doesn't work hard or is a bad teammate. My comment was that Odell enjoys the side benefits of being a star athlete more than being a star athlete. That's not a fact that's an opinion.

I'm glad to be corrected though. Admittedly you are way more tuned into East Rutherford than anyone.

He's never done anything to disrespect any of his coaches or even position coaches. And it certainly would have been understood if he did blow up at a coordinator with how awful the team has been.

Plus, Coughlin had his chance. Didn't seem to think it was an issue either.
It's extraordinary how some people's imaginations
eclipz928 : 12/9/2017 8:13 am : link
run wild when it comes to Odell Beckham - perceiving things about him that are not bore in reality. The way you hear many here, and in the media, describe him gives the impression that they look at him as one of these players that has had verbal confrontations with the coaches, try to embarrass his QB, missed practices, and has a criminal record.

Beckham is a great wide receiver, with a obnoxious bleached mohawk and end zone celebrations. Ultra competitive, subject to an occasional emotional outburst, but has never directed it negatively at a teammate. Seemingly a very good and decent person when he's off the field, and a hard worker on the field and in practice. Typical millennial that spends a lot of time using social media, which positions himself often to post things subject to misinterpretation.

. . . anyone can feel free to correct me if I missed anything.

Nothing to correct. It’s just a bunch of holier than thou white dudes that can’t relate to today’s athletes. Their bullshit narrative that “things were better back in my day” is their calling card. But back in their “wonderful” day they didn’t have social media 24/7. They honestly think their favorite players all went home each day to their wives and children and led perfectly innocent lives because they didn’t hear about things. It’s called ignorance.
For the most part

The only "Saints" in the NFL are associated with the New Orleans team, and they aren't necessarily saints.

The NFL is pro sports, and all that matters is winning and making money, both for the ownership and players. Every player will be considered available for trade or cut if that makes the team better. That includes Odell, that includes Eli. Management/Coaches are not exceptions, either.

And yes, there are loyalty considerations. It's not good business to tick off your fans and sponsors, but that only goes so far.

When the team is winning, everyone is more tolerant of a player's idiosyncrasies. When a team is losing, everyone is less tolerant, and are looking to assign blame.

The key to winning in the NFL is having deep healthy talent that's motivated to play. If your starting players can't stay on the field, don't have talent, don't have good players to replace them if injured, or aren't motivated, they aren't going to win.

This is why the next coach selection is critical. I think you need either Saban, or someone like him to manage a high strung talent like Odell. The team needs someone who commands respect as a head coach, and Saban fits the bill (if he's interested).

The Giants are facing a long period of mediocre or worst, and that will hit their bottom line as much as anything. Saban is worth it, even with the large buyout necessary. The Giants are far from a poor organization, and presuming Mara is committed to winning, he'll find the money to do this...if Saban is interested.

I think the attitude of the players reverses 100% if Saban is hired, and I think we start winning as early as next year.

and look at this situation objectively.

The article is right on point.

Beckham is looking to be paid 20 million dollars a year. You need to be a team leader to even sniff that. An example. A role model. A calm ship in the storm.

Let me let you all in on a little secret. The Giants aren't enamored with Beckham and see him as a necessary evil right now. They have waited and waited for the "light bulb" to go on with the guy, where he matures a little to understand that a WR can't be great in the NFL without a good team around him, meaning QB and O-Line and even cohesive coaching. Beckham makes it impossible to create any kind of unity with his constant "me first" personality.

This has been told to me by a few different people connected with the NFL, and lost in ALL of the bedlam this last week was this tidbit from John Mara at his press conference. When asked about Beckham he said

"I certainly expect him to be a part of this team in the future, but that will be a discussion also with the incoming general manager and the incoming head coach. We'll make whatever decision we think is appropriate going forward."

Read between the lines. He is standing in front of reporters and saying that a young cost controlled star will have his situation evaluated by the organization and that the Giants MAY be ready to move on. Have you EVER heard anything like that with someone of Beckham's talent on a rookie deal?

The Giants braintrust screwed the pooch because they thought just maybe a 36 year old Eli could sprinkle some magic dust on his arm and give us one more run, and maybe he still can, who knows. The time to trade Beckham was last offseason for a mega haul. Don't tell me a team who thought they were 1 or 2 players away wouldn't give us two firsts and a good player for the guy. The phone would have been ringing off of the hook for the marketing concept alone of having Beckham on the team. People make trades like that for guys who never played in the league. The Bills traded 2 firsts and a fourth to move up 5 spots in the draft for Sammy Watkins.

So what do we do now? The answer is still work the phones and try to get 2 extra first round picks and a good player and hope someone bites. The injury is going to make that hard. Having 4 first round picks in the next 2 years is the surest way to rebuild this thing, especially if the Giants used their pick on a stud QB. By the time the Giants are really competitive again Beckham will be out of contract or holding out (which he threatened last year briefly). My point is that you can't build around Beckham. That would be lunacy. No bad team has ever been built around a WR before.

Bottom Line:

a) Beckham loves being a sports celebrity.

b) Beckham does not love being a productive NFL player and sees that only as a means to achieve (a) above.

I agree. I'd look to get a 'Herschel Walker' type deal and move on.

OBJ is a tool, but he’s our tool
trueblueinpw : 12/10/2017 11:23 am : link
I think OBJ cares very much about winning and I’m not an OBJ hater. Having said that, punching a wall, especially when you make your living with your hands, is really just dumb. The sideline antics with the net and all the rest of the clownery with OBJ indicate, to me at least, a kind of histrionics and look-at-me centric persona which lays somewhere well outside of competitive fire. I cheer for OBJ, he’s a Giant and a whale of a talent on the football field and by most accounts the young man is a prodigous worker. But the dude brings the haters with his own self inflicted ridiculousness. I’m happy when OBJ makes plays for the Giants on the field but I can live just fine without ever hearing anything else from this guy.
