Will Redskin game, be the biggest of this season?

Doomster : 12/9/2017 12:06 pm
It may be Eli's last in a Giant uniform.....

The only way Eli should be back next year, is if the new GM thinks we can do a one year turnaround with him.....that means drafting for now! Possibly going OL the first two rounds....

If drafting a QB for the future, then it doesn't make sense to keep Eli and his 22M cap on the team, just for mentoring purposes.....cutting him saves 10M per season the next two years, which can be used to rebuild this OL in free agency....keeping him DELAYS the inevitable rebuild......

I would rather see Eli playing on another team behind a decent OL with weapons, rather than continue to struggle with the OL problems we will still have....he should not be part of a rebuilding process, at this stage of his career....
It's not a given

but could be Eli's farewell game as a Giant. The end of an era is usually sad.

Looking forward to the future face of the franchise.
not drafting a QB this year would be short-sighted
GiantsFan84 : 12/9/2017 12:36 pm : link
There are some very good QBs coming out and it's hopefully not often you pick near the top of the draft. You don't pass up the opportunity to draft one even if you think Eli has 1-2 good years left (in my opinion he doesn't).
The Giants would be making a huge mistake
Jay on the Island : 12/9/2017 12:59 pm : link
If they don't go QB in round 1. The worst thing they could do is draft for now. The draft is for the future with free agency used as a tool to fill immediate needs.

I don't understand the point of cutting Eli to save 10 million. They would be taking a 12 million dollar cap hit by doing so and to sign a viable stop gap starter they would likely spend 7-12 million on a 1 year deal. So it basically cancels out anyway. If Eli is genuinely willing to return then he should be brought back. Would you rather have Eli or Josh McCown, Matt Moore, or Alex Smith for essentially the same amount?
How does keeping Eli delay a rebuild?
Jay on the Island : 12/9/2017 1:04 pm : link
The truth is it doesn't. If Josh Rosen is the pick he could be ready to start week one but the truth is Darnold, Allen, Mayfield, and Jackson all really need time to adjust and would be much better off sitting for a year. The Giants would have to sign a veteran stop gap anyway why not have keep Eli who would be the perfect mentor. After next season the Giants could release Eli allowing him to pick his next team if he wants to continue playing. The dead money would be significantly lower as well. The Giants would then have their franchise QB on a cheap deal for 4 more years where they could use the money to strengthen the rest of the roster like the Seahawks did when they have Russell Wilson on his rookie deal.

The argument is cutting Eli for 2018 saves about $10 million in cap space. The benefit of keeping Eli is he can start and mentor the future QB.

My guess is Eli will ask to be traded or released so he can play for a contender. I can't imagine anyone thinking the Giants can compete in 2018, and he could get benched at any time in favor of the rookie. Based on this, I don't see Eli on the Giants next year.

Giants can either keep Geno Smith as their vet starter or find someone else.

I understand they save 10 million in cap room but most if not all of that will have to go to a stop gap starter anyway. I might be in the minority here but if the Giants address the offensive line in the draft and FA I could see them competing for a playoff spot next year assuming they hire the right HC. The defense is still talented and if they add a solid LB and Goodson stays relatively healthy they could be a top 10 unit again.
If Eli is gone
Jay on the Island : 12/9/2017 1:28 pm : link
I would rather see the Giants sign Josh McCown than Geno. McCown is having an excellent year when you consider the talent around him on offense plus the offensive line in front of him. He is a great mentor for a young QB and wouldn't complain if he is benched later in the year if the rookie QB is ready to start.
Draft Pick
nkleppel : 12/9/2017 1:29 pm : link
If available, Mayfield, Rosen, Darnold or perhaps one other QB could be a great pick. Then keep Webb. Eli starts next year with TWO young QB's to mentor. No matter which one eventually becomes the starter, breaking the new one in gradually over 1-2 seasons, the other is a great back-up (if he accepts the back-up position) and the QB situation is solved for many years. Other teams have prospered in this situation. It keeps the starter on his toes and also allows Eli to retire gracefully as a Giant. You are also protected against a bad injury to a QB. Use lower picks to rebuild a solid offensive line, in combination with free agency. The defense is better than it has shown this year and doesn't need much, perhaps a LB. The TE situation is already solved and the WR's should be healthy again. With a good O line, 22 and 26 could be enough as RB's. It may take a lot of bucks but it is doable and could make for a strong future.
i think you move on from eli
GiantsFan84 : 12/9/2017 1:43 pm : link
let the coach and GM start fresh with new faces to the organization. see what you can get for Eli from the Broncos, Jags, Dolphins, Cardinals, etc and let him try to win there.

Plus let's be real. Eli has not been good at all. Move on. Get what you can in terms of value and cap space.
Drafting a qb in the 1st round whether Eli stays or goes would be
SterlingArcher : 12/9/2017 1:46 pm : link
a huge mistake! If the Giants do not rebuild the oline it won't matter who the qb is. If the draft a qb and he has a lousy season fans will be screaming they picked the wrong qb, he's a bust. Look at the success the young qb's around the league are having, what do they all have in common? Good olines! So be careful what you wish for, you just may get it!
Why does Eli have to
Doomster : 12/9/2017 1:55 pm : link
mentor anyone?

Who mentored Dak? Who mentored Wentz? Who mentored Watson?

Cutting Eli saves us 10M, this season, AND 10M next season....this can be used in FAcy for OL.....and the second round pick can be OL.....a quicker way to fix the OL.....

If a drafted QB needs to sit one season, then he shouldn't be drafted....

Getting Eli off the books, and having an extra 20M to work with, quickens the rebuild....

Think we win a championship with Eli next year? That would be the only logical reason for keeping him....

Hard decisions have to be made, not sentimental ones...
Eli’s last game?
Giant John : 12/9/2017 1:55 pm : link
Hell no. This team has 2 wins. Explain how any game left is the biggest of their season?
It's the biggest,

Great so you're suggesting reaching for an offensive linemen because that is a need? There isn't blue chip LT in this draft. While Nelson could become a great guard using the #2 or # 3 pick on him over a QB is a horrible decision. In theory let's say that the Giants do take Nelson and use their 2nd round pick on C Billy Price. What if Webb isn't a starting QB as the odds are surely against him? The Giants are not likely to be bad enough to pick in the top 10 next season with a decent HC. By the time they do finally find their next franchise QB Nelson and Price's rookie contracts will be up and we will be debating which one we should keep. Get the QB in the draft use the 2nd and another pick on offensive linemen and add a veteran or two in FA to the offensive line. Do not reach for need!

Carson Palmer sat for a year behind Kitna. Aaron Rodgers sat for 3 years behind Favre. Brady sat for a year behind Bledsoe. Eli sat for half a season behind Warner.

How much would the Giants save by cutting Eli and signing another vet QB?
If Giants want a veteran
joeinpa : 12/9/2017 3:15 pm : link
For a young quarterback to sit behind unti he s ready, Eli, under contract is the perfect guy.

If he wants to move on, I m ok with that.

I really had difficulty understanding the uproar over The Giants wanting to get a look at their other quarterbacks.

I know it was handled poorly, but better quarterbacks than Eli have lost their jobs when they could still play, with hardly a whimper.
You all talk as if the Giants draft position guarantees them a shot
jsuds : 12/9/2017 5:33 pm : link
at a franchise QB. It is a wonderful theory. Good thing that everything works in theory!
There are possibly 6 QB's with 1st round value
Rjanyg : 12/9/2017 8:35 pm : link
1. Darnold
2. Rosen
3. Mayfield
4. Jackson
5. Allen
6. Rudolph

One should be selected with our first pick, it just makes sense. I love the idea of Nelson as the starting OG and probable All Pro. It could happen but the Giants would have to win 3 more game and fall down in the order for that to happen. It's all about value.

Eli should finish this year out as the starter. Hopefully the new GM can figure out the best plan after the season.
People are clueless
mdthedream : 12/9/2017 8:40 pm : link
We will draft a QB in the first round.Eli will be back next year and there is no reason to get rid of Eli at all. For one its not Webb if it was he would be already seeing reps. If he he is he obviously is not close to ready so again Eli would play next year.

That is about as dumb a comment I have seen...Go ask the Browns, Jets, Bills, etc etc who have not found a franchise qb in years and years and years....An oline is much easier to fix than getting a franchise qb....
The big question is:

Hey, if we end up with Jim Kelly that's worth it too - except for the losing Superbowls part.
