The Redskins will "purposely lose" the final game of the season to try to get one of the young QBs in the draft seeing that Cousins is most likely history with them.
IMO. There’s no way they would “purposely” lose - you cant tell professional athletes playing not just for pride and bc it’s their job, but are playing for their future job opportunities, to throw a game.
The only way to try and “tank” is to bench key players - which, if healthy, is an extremely questionable concept for an organization to try and justify to the media, to their fans who have paid for tickets, and to sponsors who paid you to advertise too.
John Mara said as much when asked about the Giants tanking the rest of the way.
don't play to lose to get a better draft pick. They are playing for their jobs. It's ridiculous to think that players will tank a game so that the team can draft somebody that may take their job away.
Skins have been trying to sign him for 2 years now but Cousins doesn't like their offers. He cost about $24M on the tag this year and if tagged again he'll cost almost $35M for 2018.
So either they work out a long term deal or Cousins leaves.
He's leaving DC. Will be interesting to see what happens to him. LA and SF are out. Keenum has impressed in MN.
Clev will most likely draft a QB with the #1. The Jets? I don't see him in NYC. He could do it if they pay him top, top dollar.
I see four landing spots: Jax, Den, Ariz, and Buffalo. But, Den will be close to the top of the draft and AZ close enough to move up. Does Den think they can get right back in it? A team thinking they are several years away won't want to spend the money. AZ, Buff, and Jax are close. Not sure what their cap situations are, but my money is on one of them.

Sigh, you can call for 4 yard routes on 3rd and 7 though. You can call an ill timed blitz when the other team is looking to throw long. So yeah you can't tell the players to tank but you can put them in a position to rather easily.

That assumes your coaches, who are also thinking about job security, are on board to “tank” by way of play calls. You think that’s ever happened? Named one example in the history of football that you’d cite as to when that’s possibly been done.
As mentioned before, the Colts tanked when their HOF QB was out for the season. Had nothing to do with players and/or coaches losing on purpose.

I can think of just 1. Ben McAdoo's play calling in 2016/2017.

Looked like he wanted SF but JG changed that.
I think he still wants western US, so of the 4 I see AZ.
will fight 100% because their jobs are on the line. This bs of tanking some of you believe is a joke. Maybe the Colts "Sucked for Luck" but remember after they sucked, everyoone was fired...Pollian, Caldwell etc.

I have no proof because the league would allegedly come down hard on that for ever admitting it, but yeah I'd wager that at some point in the history of the league a front office somewhere told their coaching staff not to push too hard in order to secure a better draft pick. Do you find that so hard to believe?

Yes, having played college football, and knowing multiple guys who have both played and/or coached in the NFL at some point, I can share that the idea an organization has ever told its coaches and/or players to lose on purpose by intentionally throwing a game by either not playing hard, or making intentionally bad play calls, is one of the stupidest fucking ideas that’s been brought up on this board.
The Colts losing Peyton for a season is apples and oranges. They didn’t tank by telling their players to lose on purpose, or telling their coaches to intentionally make play calls to throw the game. They lost bc their HOF QB got hurt, and they had to start a scrub backup the whole season. Teams have “mailed it in” by playing backups before - that’s not what the discussion here has been about.
Sorry, still not following the theme. Cousins and the Redskins Â
Didn’t the 49ers win the SB that year how did they tank ?
Many feel they tanked the last game of that year, to let's just say, keep an east coast team out of the playoffs. I know it was just one game, but it did work out for them.

The Colts tanked from day 1 when they started Curtis Painter.

They started Painter for fuck's sake. They could have found a better prospective starter in the dumpster behind the stadium.
They won 10 games the year before and 11 the year after. They couldn't muster more than 2 wins? They mailed in the entire season, from top to bottom.
