Giants not looking like they’re going to have a lot of salary cap space to roll over to next year. NFLPA lists them with $1.028 million left for this year.

GM

Rapoport NFL.com: Dave Gettleman emerges as favorite in Giants' GM search
“And several sources informed of their GM search say the Giants do have an early favorite: former Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.
Owners Mara and Steve Tisch almost always hire individuals with ties to the organization, and Gettleman has that. He was the Pro Personnel Director and the Senior Pro Personnel Analyst with the Giants until Carolina hired him away in 2013.
While he led the Panthers out of cap hell and built a Super Bowl participant, he stayed in touch with friend and confidant, Ernie Accorsi, who is serving as the consultant for the Giants search. The two have remained in contact recently.
Interim GM Kevin Abrams, a respected executive in the league, will also get serious consideration for the head job. One upside of Gettleman is that Abrams would likely stay in the organization if he were hired, perhaps with a promotion.”

Two notes on the #Giants GM search: 1. They would've interviewed GM John Dorsey, which may be why the #Browns moved on him. 2. Keep an eye on #Panthers DC Steve Wilks as coach if Gettleman is hired by #NYG

Schefter ESPN: Giants' interest in John Dorsey affected timing of Browns' decisions
“Dorsey was scheduled to fly to New York this week to interview with the Giants on Tuesday, sources said.”

“Dorsey was in the running for the Giants' general manager job, which the team would like to fill before it hires a head coach. With Dorsey out, former Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman is a leading candidate to become the Giants' next general manager, sources said.

Princiotti Boston Globe: Quick turnaround as Patriots again prepare to face Dolphins
“While Belichick has been the coach, the Patriots have played 74 games against an opponent they have already faced in a season. That includes two playoff games against the Jets, which were the third meetings between the AFC East rivals in those seasons (2006 and 2010).
In those games, the Patriots have a 50-24 record, or a .676 winning percentage. That’s lower than Belichick’s overall winning percentage as Patriots coach, .743, which reflects that a team good enough to beat the Patriots once has a better shot at beating them again than an average team.”

“A surprisingly-tough Eagles team gave the Giants a run for their money to end the regular season at the snow-covered Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Given that New York had already clinched the division and had easily rolled over the Eagles in the first meeting, they may not have been sharp. A 61-yard rush by Swede Hanson in the middle of the fourth quarter gave Philadelphia a 14-13 lead and apparent upset victory, but it was to be short lived. The 8,000 fans who withstood the winter weather were stunned to see Newman complete a 61-yard touchdown pass to Richards immediately after. The 20-14 lead held and 11-3 New York closed the season on a seven-game win streak and with a perfect 7-0 record at home. Despite the championship game being held in Chicago, Owen and the Giants were confident.”

12-10-1939 Packers 27 Giants 0 (Championship)

Mil JS: Bays Crush Giants in Title Game

“Green Bay’s mighty Packers increased their football prestige Sunday in the State Fair park Dairy Bowl by defeating the New York Giants, 27 to 0, for the championship of the National Football league. A record crowd, officially announced at 32,279, saw the Packers triumph in amazing fashion.
It was a great battle the first half, the Packers holding to a 7 to 0 lead at the intermission, but in the second half it was all Green Bay as the Packers, vengeance bent because of their title game defeat last year by a 23 to 17 score, completely routed the Tim Mara forces with a devastating attack that piled up 10 points in each of the last two periods.
PACKERS IN CONTROL
The Packers were complete masters, both on the ground and in the air. The ground attack functioned smoothly with Joe Laws and Arnie Herber directing the strategy that crossed the defense up with spinners, short side and power shots. Then they slipped in their passes where they’d do the most damage.

In contrast, the Giants hardly got started against the powerful Bay front wall that came through with a remarkable display of defensive prowess and turned in some blocking that opened up great holes through which the Bay backs pounded. In the air it was the same, the Bays, with Charlie Brock leading the way, intercepting six aerials that were as instrumental as anything in enabling the Packers to pile up their defensive margin of victory.

MANY OFFENSE STARS
There were any number of Packer stars, but on defense it was that man Brock and on offense it was the passing of Arnie Herber and Cecil Isbell, the running of Ironsides Hinckle, Andy Uram and Laws and the pass snatching of Don Hutson, Milt Gantenbein and Harry Jacunski that kept the Packers in complete control.
Hutson was pretty well covered, but set up the first touchdown with a catch on the 6 and then decoyed the defenders out as Gantenbein took a pass over the goal. A pass to Laws netted the second touchdown and Ed Jankowski’s 1-yard plunge the third, while Tiny Engebretsen and Ernie Smith booted placements of 29 and 42 yards, respectively.
Brock seemed like a man possessed. The Canadian mounted never trailed a man like that human hawk who was swarming all over the field. With the score 7 to 0, (New York’s Tuffy) Leemans caught a pass and was headed for the wide open spaces when Brock hauled him down from behind on the 9. Not content with that, the former Nebraska Husker followed with a pass interception to kill the only serious New York threat until the game was cinched.

HUTSON IS DECOY
Herber’s passing was a topnotch exhibition in the first period as he pitched strike after strike when they had to be pitched. The touchdown shot to Gantenbein was the climax as he faked to Hutson, angling wide to draw the defense out, and then shot a zooming high one to Gantenbein over center in the end zone.”

“If 7-1-1 New York won the finale at Washington, the Giants would win the Eastern Division title. If Washington won, they would be tied with the Giants at 7-2-1, making the Philadelphia-Cleveland game critical. If the Eagles won, they would take the Eastern crown. If Philadelphia lost, for the second consecutive year, a playoff between New York and Washington would decide who advanced to the NFL Championship Game. In the event of a Philadelphia victory and a tie between Washington and New York, the Giants would play the Eagles in a playoff. Unfortunately, New York would be without Blozis, who was called away for military duty.
In all, New York intercepted six passes on the day, en route to their fifth shutout of the season.
The capacity crowd of 35,540 at Griffith Stadium was silenced early. Baugh fumbled on the first two possessions and the Giants capitalized both times. The first was a 25-yard Herber-to-Cuff touchdown connection less than four minutes into the contest. Then Herber connected with Liebel from 11 yards out for a second touchdown. Owen’s defense quashed any hopes of Baugh leading his Redskins in a comeback. Filchock relieved Baugh in a desperate attempt to spark a reversal of momentum, but the results were the same. In all, New York intercepted six passes on the day, en route to their fifth shutout of the season.”

AP:

“Randy Clay kicked a 15-yard field goal and Charley Conerly passed six yards to Eagles-castoff Bob McChesnev for a touchdown in the first quarter and the Giants made those points stand up thanks to their own defense and Philly's constant lum bling and blunders. The Eagles blew four field goal attempts and fumbled away several other scoring chances. They also had three passes intercepted by the alert Giant secondary. The crowning blunder was an unnecessary clip thrown bv Tackle Mike Jarmoluk while Jay McDowell was en route to a touchdown. The "six-pointer which would have meant victory was called back to the Eagle 45.

A castoff was credited today with leading the New York Giants to 9-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles and a shot at the Cleveland Browns in a tie-breaking test next Sunday to decide the American Conference winner of the National Football League. End Bob (Hands) McChesney, a former Hardin-Simmons ace who had been the Eagles' third draft choice for 1950, snagged the pass which set up the field goal that was the margin of victory. A few minutes later he grabbed two more aerials to score in a "do-or-die" battle before 26,440 fans at Shibe Park yesterday. Both tallies came in the opening period. Another Lone Star gridder, former Texas back Randall Clay, shared the honors with McChesney by booting the 15-yard game-winning field goal, the first in his pro career. Clay stepped into the breach when place-kicking specialist Ray Poole suffered a cracked bone in his right ankle just after the opening kick-off, an injury which probably will rule Poole out of the battle at Cleveland. A few plays later; McChesney, of Van Nuys, Calif., nailed a 25-yard pass and then stepped across with another six-yarder hurled by Charley Conerly. Those were ' the highlights of a frenzied, hard-fought exhibition which also- included a snow-storm, an injured official, the first "day" for Eagle ace Steven Van Buren, and a 79-yard Bird touchdown run which was recalled on a clipping penalty.

In the third quarter, with the Giants up 9-7, Eagles DT Jay MacDowell ran 79 yards for a TD, but Referee Emll Heintz penalized the Eagles for clipping. Afterwards, police had to rescue Heintz.”

Today in Pro Football History: Giants Edge Eagles 28-24 in Eastern Conference Showdown

“New York drew first blood on the fourth play from scrimmage on a 46-yard bomb from Tittle to split end Del Shofner. The Eagles responded with a 26-yard Bobby Walston field goal after recovering a fumble by Giants FB Alex Webster. Just prior to the end of the first quarter, Philadelphia scored a touchdown out of the stacked deck formation - three receivers lined one behind the other on one side of the field, and flanker Tommy McDonald on the opposite side. Jurgensen hit McDonald cutting across the middle of the field, and the 5’9”, 170-pound darter completed the 52-yard play to put the Eagles ahead, 10-7.

The Giants fumbled the ball away twice more during the second quarter, but Philadelphia was unable to capitalize. LB Cliff Livingston intercepted a Jurgensen pass at midfield, and at this point Conerly entered the game in place of Tittle, who was having an uncharacteristically flat performance after the initial TD. It looked as though Conerly would do no better when Eagles FS Don Burroughs intercepted a third down pass, but an offside call on the defense nullified the play, and given a second chance Conerly hit TE Joe Walton for a 35-yard touchdown.

New York missed opportunities to extend their lead due to missed field goal attempts of 23 and 34 yards by placekicker Pat Summerall. The halftime score stood at 14-10 in favor of the Giants.

A fumble by Eagles HB Ted Dean set up the next Giants TD in the third quarter, a 26-yard pass from Conerly to Shofner. The Eagles struck back with a 66-yard bomb from Jurgensen to McDonald that quieted the booing home fans and put the ball at the New York 11 yard line. However, they came up empty and the quarter ended with the Giants ahead, 21-10.

Another penalty damaged the Eagles as a 34-yard pass play from Jurgensen to HB Timmy Brown down to the Giants one yard line was called back for offensive pass interference on McDonald. The teams traded punts, with the Eagles getting the field position advantage, and McDonald made up for the penalty on the previous series by scoring a 30-yard touchdown on a pass from Jurgensen to narrow the Giants margin to 21-17.

The Giants couldn’t move on their next possession, and were forced to punt from their 16 yard line. However, Eagles DE Leo Sugar was penalized for making contact with punter Don Chandler in a highly controversial call that changed the momentum of the game. New York made the most of the break, driving down the field to score on Del Shofner’s third TD reception of the game on an 11-yard throw from Conerly.

Philadelphia got the ball back with 2:44 to play and down 28-17. Jurgensen connected with split end Pete Retzlaff for a 61-yard TD, but the Eagles were unable to score on their final possession in the last 18 seconds, and the Giants won, 28-24.

The win put the Giants a game ahead in the race for the conference title, and they tied Cleveland in the season finale the next week to finish in first place at 10-3-1.”

“Our defense went out and got (Fran Tarkenton). That’s the way we planned it. That’s what we knew we had to do.” Joe Schmidt, coach of the Detroit Lions, praised his defense and the passing of Karl Sweetan in the visitors’ clubhouse at Yankee Stadium Sunday after the Lions had upset the 'New Yohk Giants 30-7. Tarkenton, the Giants’ scrambling quarterback who had thrown 25 touchdown passes in 12 previous National Football League games, was able to complete only three of 16 and was simeared four times for losses of 63 yards. When Earl Morrall took over late in the third period, the 'big rush by Alex Karras, Larry Hand and Co. dumped him four times and allowed only three completions out of seven. All in all, the aroused Lions’ defense smeared the quarterback eight times for 88 yards. Only a 27-yard pass from Mor-raill to Aaron Thomas Broke the shutout in the fourth quarter. For the first time all season, the fleet Homer Jones was blanked without a reception by the alert work of cornermen.”

Dolphins.com: Dolphins Keep Perfect Season Intact

“The Giants actually took a 6-0 lead early in the game, but the Dolphins responded with an 80-yard, time-consuming drive that ended when Morris scampered around the corner, stayed in bounds and scored from 12 yards out. Soon after, Mike Kolen forced the first Giants turnover of the game, a fumble that was recovered by Doug Swift. That resulted in a Garo Yepremian field goal to boost Miami's lead to 10-6.
Following another Giants turnover in the second quarter, Paul Warfield took off at the Giants' 34-yard line and leaped high into the air at the two to grab Earl Morrall's pass. He then slid across the goal line in the muck to increase Miami's lead to 17-6.
The Giants scored their second touchdown right before halftime to close to 17-13 at intermission, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. The No-Name defense produced four more turnovers in the second half that produced two Yepremian field goals, wrapping up Miami's 23-13 win. The victory improved the Dolphins' record to 13-0 and kept their undefeated record intact.
"They're the best-coached team we faced this year," said Giants cornerback Willie Williams, who was beaten on Warfield's touchdown. "If you make a mistake they stick it to you. And that's what they did."

Rams Win It Like Champions, 40-6 McCutcheon Hits 1,000 in Romp Over Giants

Oates LA Times:

“The New York Giants aren't much football team this year, but they're an NFL team, and they sometimes win when they shouldn't. So that was the challenge Monday night for the Rams, who rose to it, smashing the Giants easily, 40-6. A Coliseum crowd of 73,328 came out in the unseasonably warm weather and saw Chuck Knox' champions start sluggishly, falling behind in the second quarter, 3-0, whereupon quarterback John Hadl marched them to two touchdowns before halftime, 14-3. They drove to another touchdown with the second half kickoff and when Isiah Robertson carried an intercepted pass 49 yards to the end zone, it was irrevocably over for the Giants, 2S-3. They went quietly as L.A.'s second-string quarterback James Harris, firing the ball like a machine, drove the Rams to their final 10 points in the fourth quarter. It was a touchdown-shutout the fourth time in 13 games this team has held the other side without a touchdown. Of those 13, the Rams have won 11. tying a franchise record. The 1067 and 1060 clubs both won that many. In the NFL this season, nobody is better than 11-2. The other two in that club are Miami and Minnesota hut the difference between them and the Rams is that when Knox' team loses, it comes close. The total margin of the two Ram defeats is three points. Tn winning this time, the Rams didn't play particularly interesting football but there were several thrills. For one, fullback Lawrence McCutcheon ran his 1073 total to 1.014 yards, passing 1,000 on a 20-yard carry in the third quarter. They stopped the game and gave him the ball and when that's done these days, the opponent sometimes stirs itself and takes the 1,000 away. On his next run, however, McCutcheon broke through for 11 yards and a touchdown. Netting SO yards on 11 attempts, McCutcheon became the sixth rookie in the NFL's 54 years to gain 1,000 yards in one season. He is the third Ram to join the club, following Dick Bass and Willie Ellison.

While their 2-10-1 record doesn't exactly qualify them for football expertise, the Giants saw enough in Los Angeles' 40-6 win Monday night at the Coliseum to compare the Rams favorably with some of the NFL's upper echelon teams. The consensus: stronger than Washington, equal to Dallas and Oakland. "They got a lot of good horses. Til tell you that," Giant coach Alex Webster said in his team's dressing room. "I'd say they're better than Washington . . . and that's a tough statement to make," said Webster. "Their ground game may even give them an edge over Oakland. Their defense is equal to Dallas', but the Cowboys throw more offense at you. I'd call that one a tossup." New York has lost five games to the teams Webster mentioned two to Dallas (28-45, 10-23), the Rams' probable opponent in the first round of the plavoffs; two to Washington (3-21, 24-27) and one to Oakland (0-42). Webster said he didn't need comparative scores to assess the Rams. His praise was effusive.”

12-10-1978 Giants 17 Cardinals 0

Doug Kotar rush 27-118-1
Terry Jackson int 1-51-0

St. Louis Times:

“The Giants snapped a six game losing streak beating St Louis on Randy Deans 6 yard TD toss to Gary Shirk and Doug Kotar’s 12yard scoring run and a defense that forced five St Louis turnovers including four fumbles. It was the Giants sixth victory of the season their most since 1972.

New York's Joe Danelo, kicking off with a strong wind behind him, sent the ball soaring into the end zone and the Cardinals began the game at their 20-yard line. And the script for this contest was written on the very first place from scrimmage. Running back Willard Harrell carried into the line and fumbled. New York safety Ernie Jones returned the loose ball to the 19 and, five plays later, Danelo gave the Giants a 3-0 lead with a 30-yard field goal. It was the 16th straight game in which Danelo has kicked a field goal. The Giant lead was expanded to 10-0 with seven seconds left in the first quarter as second-year quarterback Randy Dean, vho started in place of injured Joe Pisarcik, tossed a six-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gary Shirk. Danelo added the extra point.

While the Cardinals made more first downs (10-6), gained more yards (148-112) and ran more plays (34-28), most of their first-half offense was tainted with frustration.

After marching 54 yards in 14 plays on their second possession, the Big Red failed to capitalize when a high snap appeared to upset Jim Bakken's rhythm and Bags' 44-yard field goal attempt fell considerably short. A double reverse, which had been one of the Big Red's most effective weapons this season, sputtered when wide receiver Dave Stief was tackled for a seven-yard loss by John Mendenhall and George Martin. Later, the Big Red were penalized for an ineligible receiver when Giant defensive end Jack Gregory, hanging on quarterback Jim Hart's back, forced a stifled pass that was caught by guard Bob Young. The Big Red errors of commission continued in the second half. Fullback Jim Otis fumbled on the Cardinals' third play of the opening series ... a 39-yard field goal attempt by Bakken was wide ... a half-dozen Hart passes bounced off the intended fingers. The worst offense, though, occurred midway through the fourth quarter. The Big Red's Gordon Bell, after signaling for a fair catch of a Dave Jennings punt, muffed it and the Giants recovered at the St. Louis 27. (Bell also fumbled a punt in the firshalf when he attempted a diving catch.) Three plays later, Doug Kotar, breaking four tackles, broke off tackle for a 12-yard touchdown. There were a few bright moments for the Big Red, like when Mike Wood, punting with the aid of the wind, unloaded an 81-yard kick that rolled into the end zone just before Perry Smith could down it. It was the longest punt of the season, eclipsing the 79-yard boot by Chuck Ramsey of the Jets. Stief snared seven passes for 98 yards and Harrell, displaying near-breakaway speed, carried 15 times for 78 yards. There was one other plus for the Cardinals: The game was the shortest of a long season.

All of the action here Sunday did not take place at ground level. Early in the third quarter, the eyes watching the Cardinals-New York Giants game were diverted from the playing field to the sky. Flying over Giants Stadium was a small plane dragging a banner. The banner read: "Fifteen years of lousy football . . . we've had enough." The sentiment was directed at the Giants, who have riot reached the playoffs since 1963 (when they lost to the Chicago Bears in the National Football League championship game) and who, entering Sunday's game, were submerged in a six-game losing streak. But on this bitterly cold afternoon, when the chill factor dipped to almost zero, it was the Big Red who displayed the lousy football. The Cardinals fumbled the ball away four times, including twice on punt returns, dropped eight passes and seemed to regard the end zone as a place as attractive to visit as Dracula's Castle. The net result was a 17-0 loss that sentenced the Big Red to sole possession of last place in the National Conference East Division with a 5-10 record.”

NYT: Giants Plow Past Broncos in Snow, 14-7

“The 63,283 who braved the weather (12,771 who had bought tickets did not) saw the Giants score twice in the first 23 minutes and then hold off Elway's scrambling and bombing.
The field was covered by tarpaulins until 75 minutes before the opening kickoff. By game time, the temperature was 23 degrees and falling, the wind had reached 15 miles an hour and the wind-chill factor was zero and falling.
As the game went on, the field became muddy on the inside and frozen outside.
''You couldn't breathe because of the cold,'' said Mark Collins, the Giants cornerback.
''I slipped bad one time,'' said Ottis Anderson, the Giants' running back.
''I slipped a couple of times,'' Collins said.
It was amazing that in such conditions, neither team turned over the ball on an interception or a fumble. Elway did not even seem to mind the weather, saying, ''I had no problem throwing the ball.''
He was able to move the ball, too, completing 23 of 47 passes for 292 yards. Of that total, 100 yards came in the last five and a half minutes of the game.
In weather like this, an early lead is especially important. The Giants got that early lead.
The first time they had the ball, they held it for 8 minutes 53 seconds and drove 85 yards to a touchdown. On the second play of the second quarter, Anderson scored it on a 3-yard run. Meggett's Return Helps
Five and a half minutes later, Dave Meggett's 26-yard punt return put the Giants on the Broncos' 36. A tripping penalty against Bart Oates and a 12-yard sack of Simms knocked the Giants back to their 43, facing third down and 31 yards to go for a first down.
Then came the play that decided the game. Simms threw a screen pass to Dave Meggett, who juggled the ball, then caught it. Oates and William Roberts threw big blocks and Meggett darted left, then right, then raced alone for a 57-yard touchdown play.
It was sweet redemption for Simms and Meggett. In the last two weeks, Simms had turned over the ball seven times. Last Sunday, Meggett's fumble cost the Giants a touchdown, and when he misplayed a 91-yard punt, the Eagles went on to score the winning touchdown.
''The offensive line made a lot of good blocks on my touchdown,'' Meggett said, ''and I took it to where the opening was.''
''That was a huge play for them,'' said Coach Dan Reeves of the Broncos. ''It gave them a 14-point lead, and these were tough conditions to have to play catch up against anybody, but especially against a good defensive team.'' Penalties Hurt Broncos
After that, the Broncos controlled the Giants' running game by committing as many as eight defenders to stopping it. Meanwhile, the Broncos' offense tried to catch up, only to abort drives with penalties.
In the second quarter, Bobby Humphrey's 50-yard run was wiped out by a holding penalty against Gerald Perry, a Broncos' offensive tackle. Perry had trouble all day with Leonard Marshall, the Giants' quick defensive end, and finished with two penalties for holding and one for tripping (the Giant declined that one).
Last Sunday, the Giants made a successful goal-line stand against the Eagles. Late in the third quarter here, they had another opportunity when the Broncos had second down on the Giants' 2. On fourth down, the Broncos were a foot or so from the goal line. Humphrey leaped over right guard, only to have Gary Reasons, the Giants' inside linebacker, leap himself and smash into Humphrey with frightening power, for a 1-yard loss.
''That's where I was supposed to be,'' Reasons said.
The Giants escaped that time, but not the next. They punted away the ball, and three plays later, after a scramble, Elway passed 32 yards to Michael Young, alone in the end zone. Broncos Stopped
That narrowed the Giants' lead to 14-7, with 14:29 left in the game. The Broncos had the ball three times after that, but could not tie the score.
They moved from their 20 to the Giants' 15, only to have Elway's fourth-down pass batted high and knocked down in the end zone. They got the ball again and moved from their 23 to the Giants' 34, only to have another pass knocked away in the end zone as time ran out.
''This is one of the great games since I've been here,'' said Coach Bill Parcells of the Giants. ''We had two very disappointing losses that took a lot of starch out of us, but we came out to this place in this weather and won it.''

AP: Unlike Cowboys, Giants Gamble, Strike It Rich

“Where Barry Switzer and the Dallas Cowboys failed, Dan Reeves and the New York Giants succeeded.
Rodney Hampton converted a fourth and inches from the Giants' 41 right after the two-minute warning to set up a 40-yard touchdown pass from Dave Brown to Chris Calloway with 1 minute, 12 seconds to play as the Giants defeated the Washington Redskins, 20-13, Sunday.
The Giants' game-winning gamble came only hours after Switzer and the Cowboys failed on a fourth and inches from their 29 with the score tied against Philadelphia. The Eagles then kicked a late field goal for a 20-17 victory.
Reeves was aware Dallas had lost the game, but he had no details. All he knew was the Giants (5-9) had blown a 13-3 halftime lead and Washington (4-10) had all the momentum after Terry Allen tied the score on a fourth-down, one-yard run with 3:35 to play.
Faced with the fourth down in his territory, Reeves didn't hesitate to go even though the Giants had not gained a first down in the second half and had been limited to only two yards.
"In that situation, you're just trying to win the game," Reeves said. "We thought we had the play to do it and we ran left behind [tackle] Jumbo [Elliott]."
Hampton gained two yards. Three plays later, Brown and Calloway combined on the game winner as Redskin defensive back Tom Carter failed to knock the ball down.
Washington had a chance to tie or win the game when Brian Mitchell returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards and kicker Brad Daluiso was called for a facemask penalty, giving the Redskins the ball at the New York 23.
However, Heath Shuler threw four incomplete passes, the last batted away from Henry Ellard by Thomas Randolph at the Giants' two.
The Giants have won two consecutive games for the first time this season and defeated Washington for the sixth consecutive time.
"The difference between winning and losing in this league is very fine and the plays you don't make early in the game can haunt you in the fourth period," said Redskin coach Norv Turner. "We just have to get over that hump, so when it comes down to one play, we make it and they don't."

Schwartz NYP: JINTS’ AIR ASSAULT BECOMES STEELER PITFALL

“Oh, those crafty Giants. Just when you thought you had them pegged, they come out as they did yesterday, completely change their offensive gameplan and pass their way to a one-sided 30-10 victory over the Steelers.
It was Let Kerry Do It for the Giants, and the approach was too much for the Steelers to handle. They loaded up to stop Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne and actually did just that, but all along, the Giants knew their mode of operations was going to be to allow Kerry Collins to unload on what they believed was a suspect Pittsburgh secondary.
“That was part of the gameplan, throw the ball, soften them up,” guard Glenn Parker said.
“That was our gameplan,” added Barber. “We knew the run was going to be hard to get going, we knew we had to rely on No. 5 [Collins] and he did a great job for us. It’s good to know we can do that. There could be games where the running game isn’t working, and now we know Kerry is going to be the guy who will lead us.”
Barber (12-22) and Dayne (11-20) went nowhere, but Collins, mostly relying on quick-step drops to get rid of the ball quickly, passed for 333 yards and one touchdown pass apiece to Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer. The Giants took a look at the Steelers and their challenging 3-4 defensive front and figured: “Why bother to attack on the ground when we can pick them apart through the air?” The Giants were not scared off by cornerbacks Chad Scott and DeWayne Washington, and that’s where they went with the ball.
“We thought we had a match-up advantage on the corners and we tried to take advantage of that,” Toomer said. “Any time the coach puts an emphasis on something like going deep, you gotta come through.”
Along the way, offensive coordinator Sean Payton opened up his bag of tricks and came up with a few gems. A receiver reverse to Toomer gained 28 yards. A shovel pass from Collins to Barber picked up 23. A flea-flicker fell incomplete, but the point was made: The Giants were not going to be predictable.
“It’s right there in front of you; you can order anything off the menu,” Payton said of the play sheet he used to call the plays. “In a game like this, you’re glad you have that much. We ended up using them.”
Consider the Steelers fooled, and beaten.
“I was thinking they’ve got a one-two punch with Barber and Dayne,” Steelers linebacker Earl Holmes said, “so we decided we were going to take away the run. If they’re going to beat us, they’re going to beat us passing.”

AP: Giants Beat Carolina to Snap 4-Game Skid

“Eli Manning and Tiki Barber put the New York Giants back in playoff shape. Chris Weinke couldn't revive Carolina's sinking season.
Manning threw three touchdown passes and Barber ran for 112 yards as the Giants snapped a four-game losing streak with a 27-13 win over the banged-up Panthers on Sunday.
The Giants (7-6) remained tied with Philadelphia and Atlanta for the NFC wild-card lead. The Panthers (6-7) lost their third straight and will lose tiebreakers to the Eagles and Giants.
Weinke, making his first start in more than four years in place of the injured Jake Delhomme, threw for a team-record 423 yards, but had three second-half interceptions. He also was undone by drops and a nonexistent running game.
While most of the attention was on Delhomme's sprained right thumb that forced him to miss his first game in four seasons, the Panthers' injury-plagued defense proved to be no match for the Giants.
The win also took some pressure off embattled coach Tom Coughlin, who had come under fire after a series of late-game collapses and player sniping.
"This not just a relief for him, it's a relief for all of us," Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said. "If anything bad happens to the head man, it runs down to us. I think the whole organization feels a lot better."
Barber went over 10,000 career yards rushing in the second quarter on the way to his fifth 100-yard game of the season.”

I could easily see him trying to trade Beckham. If he’s hired I would hope he attacks the poor performance by Sternfeld when Ross and fires them both.

As far as Wilks he strikes me as HC material. He would need to hire a good OC and QB coach to develop our QB of the future.

Very interesting. I love what I heard there and it had nothing to do with the number one overall ranking. With that said, what would happen to our team? Is he flexible enough to alter his scheme? It seems like they play a lot of cover 2 in Catolina. If that is the case they don't value corners as much and they value LBs more. That would be a longer turnaround if we went with that approach. I am not sayjng we should or shouldn't do that. I'm just pointing out that it could be a longer process.

There isn't one.

Sense I get is that Giants WR Sterling Shepard (questionable, hamstring) should be good to go today but DE Jason Pierre-Paul (questionable, finger) is still a 50-50 situation. Will see what happens in warmups

I am afraid that he is going to bring in another former Giant as HC though like John Fox. Please bring in some new blood as HC. I am warming to the idea of Josh McDaniels. The candidates I don't want are Mike Smith, Fox, or Marvin Lewis.

Giants

GM

Brooks NFL.com on Gettleman:

Bucky Brooks (@BuckyBrooks)
12/10/17, 10:02 AM
This is interesting for a few different reasons.. He grew up in the #Giants organization like Reese and their philosophies were shaped by George Young/Ernie Arcosi. If G-Men want to build through the draft, that's not really his strong suit (ex-pro personnel man)

Bucky Brooks (@BuckyBrooks)
12/10/17, 10:05 AM
Not knocking his success in CAR (3 straight playoff appearance and SB berth) but the team's core players were holdovers from previous regime.. Draft track record was spotty... Based on how he looks at players, it doesn't appear to be a big change in philosophy or viewpoints

Bucky Brooks (@BuckyBrooks)
12/10/17, 10:17 AM
Did you read the rest of my tweet?

I didn't say anything about him building through FA. I simply stated that drafting (college evaluations/projections) isn't necessarily is strong suit, according to people that I know who worked there..

Bucky Brooks (@BuckyBrooks)
12/10/17, 10:43 AM
Once again, I will state that the draft isn't his strong suit.. If you've spent the overwhelming majority of you career evaluating "pros vs pros", you're not going to be as strong projecting college players to the pros. It's a different world.. More subjective.. More projection..

History

In 1980 a decimated Giants team pulled it together to upset the Cowboys as players were literally introducing themselves in the defensive huddle

Maybe history can repeat:

1980: Giants Upset Cowboys with Help of Flea-Flicker to Friede

“The New York Giants won their opening game of the 1980 NFL season, but by the time they hosted the Dallas Cowboy s on November 9 they had lost eight straight contests. In their second year under Head Coach Ray Perkins, injuries had decimated the team on both sides of the ball...”

GiantsFan84 : 12/10/2017 12:56 pm : link
bucky brooks is right. what did gettleman do that was so great in carolina? he alienated two fan favorites (smith and deangelo), traded away their best defensive player for which their secondary still has not recovered from, and got fired

also, just a thought, but if you are about to draft a new franchise QB (hopefully), wouldn't you want an offensive minded coach?
Gettleman + Abrams = bandaid.....
GiantTerp79 : 12/10/2017 1:47 pm : link
Ugh, even when I think Mara finally understands the steps that need to be taken to finally make this organization a well run respected franchise like it was during most of Arcorssi's tenure.......Gettlemen did nothing in Carolina. He's another Reese. Won a Super Bowl with the other guy's players. Fucking Giants. Even when they do something right they still seem to find a way to screw it up. Nothing is set in stone and this is really where I come to vent my frustrations about this franchise but hiring Gettleman wreaks of a typical Mara move, like that feeling you get when you thought you cleaned up all the dog shit in your yard and right as your about to go back in the house, boom, stepped in it.....
We could do

SHO'NUFF : 12/10/2017 4:23 pm : link
This stinks of the whole Coughlin/McAdoo thing. Mara is not committed to turning this thing around if he has tunnel vision regarding past relationships...hiring Accorsi was mistake number one, as good as EA probably is...

Wilks? sounds like he has as much experience as McAdoo.

and how is anything related to the Browns a hot commodity?
I have zero confidence...

Jints Central will get this right.

The Accorsi hire just proves it. Accorsi is AM radio.
