Gettleman vs Reese

Sarcastic Sam : 12/10/2017 8:30 am
Since the rumor mill is heating up on Dave Gettleman, I thought it would be nice to compare the Giants with Carolina's drafts while DG was GM. It's a mixed bag for both resumes, unfortunately.

2013: Giants pick 19, Panthers pick 14.
CAR
1. Star Lotulelei (DT) - still on team
2. Kawann Short (DT, Pro Bowl) - franchised, still on team
4. Edmund Kugbila (G) - CAR 13-14, out of league
5. A. J. Klein (LB) - CAR 13-16, NOS 17-present
6. Kenjon Barner (RB) - CAR 13, PHI 14-16, 17-present

1. Pugh (OT) - still on team
2. Johnathan Hankins (DT) - NY 13-16, IND 17-present
3. Damontre Moore (DE) - 13-15, MIA 15, SEA 16, DAL 17, OOL
4. Ryan Nassib (QB) - NY 13-16, JAX 17, OOL
5. Cooper Taylor (S), NY 13-15
7. Eric Herman (OG), NY 13-15
7. Michael Cox (RB), NY 13-14

The Panthers have a Pro Bowler and all except their 4th rounder is still somewhere in the league. On the other hand, only Pugh and Hankins are still in the NFL for the Giants.

2014: Carolina picked 28, GIants picked 12.
Carolina
1. Kelvin Benjamin (WR) - CAR 14-17, Bills 17-present (traded)
2. Kony Early (DE) - CAR 14-16, NYJ 17-present
3. Trai Turner (G) - CAR 14-present, Pro Bowlx2
4. Tre Bston (S) CAR 14-16, LAC 17-present
5. Bene Benwikere (C) - CAR 14-16, MIA 16, DAL 17-present
6. Tyler Gaffen (RB) - did not make team, NE 14-16, JAX 17-present

New York
1. Odell Beckham, Jr (WR) - NYG 14-present, ProBowlx3
2. Weston Richburg (C) - NYG 14-present
3. Jay Bromley (DT) - NYG 14-present
4. Andre Williams (RB) - NYG 14-15, LAC 16-present
5. Nat Berhe (FS) - NYG 14-present
5. Devon Kennard (LB) - NYG 14-present
6. Bennet Jackson (S) - NYG 14-15

Only one of Carolina's picks is still a Panther.

2015: Panthers pick 25, Giants 9
Carolina
1. Shaq Thompson (OLB) - CAR 15-present
2. Deviin Finches (WR) - CAR 15-present
4. Daryl Williams (OT) - CAR 15-present
5. David Mayo (LB) - CAR 15-present
5. Cameron Artis-Payne (RB) - CAR 15-present

New York
1. Ereck Flowers (OT) - NYG 15-present
2. Landon Collins (S) - NYG 15-present, Pro Bowl
3. Owa Obdighizuwa (DE) - NYG 15-16, out of league
5. Mykkele Thompson (CB) - NYG 15-16, out of league
6. Geremy Davis (WR) - NYG 15-16, LAC 16-present
7. Bobby Hart (OT), NYG 15-present

All of Carolina's picks are still Panthers. Landon Collins saves this draft for the Giants. Bobby Hart is the best RT in the NFL, I hear.

2016: Carolina picks 30, Giants pick 10
Carolina
1. Vernon Butler (DT) - CAR 16-present
2. James Bradberry (CB) - CAR 16-present
3. Daryl Worley (CB) - CAR 16-present
5. Zack Sanchez (CB) - CAR 16, on PS
7. Beau Sandaled (TE) - did not make team

Giants
1. Eli Apple (CB)
2. Sterling Shepard (WR)
3. Darian Thompson (S)
4. B.J. Goodson (ILB)
5. Paul Perkins (RB)
6. Jerell Adams (TE)

2017: CAR 8, NYG 23
Carolina
1. Christian McCaffrey (RB)
2. Curtis Samuel (WR)
2. Taylor Moton (OT)
3. Dyaeshon Hall (DE)
5. Corn Elder (CB)
6. Alexander Armah (FB)
7. Harrison Butker (K), CAR 17, KC 17-present

New York
1. Evan Engram (TE)
2. Dalvin Tomlinson (DT)
3. Davis Webb (QB)
4. Wayne Gallman (RB)
5. Avery Moss (DE)
6. Adam Bisnowaty (OT) - on PS
Gettleman's expertise was in current NFL players

so I think you'd have to see how he did in FA with the Panthers and how we did before and after he left.

I think if Gettleman is hired they need someone in charge of college scouting because that is where we need the most help and that guy should bring new ideas and should be a fresh face from outside the organization if Gettleman is the GM.
If the Giants hire Gettleman..

It tells me they are very high on Abrams

Giants could give Gettleman a 4-5 year deal and transition to Abrams if things go well. Don’t love it.
Wow

some of those Giants drafts are just brutal.

Without Odell and Collins -- holy crap.
Gettleman is 66 years old

I'm concerned he won't have the energy it requires.
You should post all the details of Carolina's

2015 draft. Gettleman traded THREE PICKS for Devin Funchess.

This also tells me our scouts suck and Ross!

Is turning the corner into an impactful WR.

My problem with bringing Gettleman here is multifold:

1. He’s now got a really ugly rep among players around the league. Will affect ability to get good FAs coming here. We got rid of McAdoo for being abrasive and not being able to communicate and manage certain sensitive aspects of their job.

2. He was here during the good period but he’s also worked with the front office characters like Ross and Sternfeld who have done terrible. Would be do what’s needed in firing and replacing them?

3. His drafting record is really not good. He also reportedly was central to rumored infighting between the scouting group on drafting which helped get him fired.

Gettleman needs to present a serious plan to not just change the Giants on the field but also clean out the front office and install a good coaching staff.

Is very accomplished and would make a nice hire back into his PRIOR role not GM.
How about...

...Jim Lee Howell as Head Coach; Vince Lombardi Offensive Coordinator and Tom Landry Defensive Coordinator.

Ooops, wrong century. Need that second cup of Joe.

bring him back in his original role where he can work with data and not talk to anybody except adults and ones with tough skin.

I know this wouldn't happen, but I would love to see Ross replaced by Reese.

Funchess has become a good player. Worth what they gave up to draft him? I don't know - but he's been pretty darn good since they dealt Benjamin to Buffalo and his emergence probably had a hand in them feeling like they could do so.
He's not worth a 2 and a three.
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/10/2017 9:17 pm : link
But let's leave that aside. Here are three years of drafts. Are they good?

Ealy was a bust, Benjamin lost whatever explosion he had to injury (sound familiar?), Thompson was a bust, minimal hits in the mid and late rounds.
Just in case the names are unfamilar
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/10/2017 10:20 pm : link
Of the 2014 draft, Benjamin, Ealy, Boston, and Benwikere are no longer with Carolina. The only remaining player from this draft class is Trai Turner. That's 1 for 6.

Of the 2015 drafts, Thompson is still a Panther, but he's not a good player. Funchess is a starter, but they traded a 2, 3, and a 6 in the same year to get him. He got a starting RT in the 4th, to be fair. But these are two highly unproductive drafts and missing at the top is how you break a franchise.

And one of them is a Pro Bowl guard. Must be nice.
