BigBlueView reporting that Gettleman...

GiantGrit : 12/10/2017 10:16 pm
could be named GM as early as mid-week. Generally curious, did we even interview any other people? I haven't heard a thing.
I knew it
DennyInDenville : 12/10/2017 10:19 pm : link
Mehhh

Could be worse

Let's see.
Maybe the Dorsey hiring
Vanzetti : 12/10/2017 10:20 pm : link
made the Giants realize they had to act more quickly than they expected.

They wanted to interview Dorsey
BigBlue4You09 : 12/10/2017 10:20 pm : link
But the Browns panicked and signed him first

Mehhh is accurate. Not too sure how to feel about it.
If this is how they want to go, I'd rather have accorsi back.
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/10/2017 10:22 pm : link
He's already around anyway.
It's all about the HC in my view
djm : 12/10/2017 10:22 pm : link
Gettleman knows how to be a GM. We need a HC that has a clear cut plan and has the respect of the players. And of course we need to hit on the qb.
Really searched far and wide for him.
bceagle05 : 12/10/2017 10:22 pm : link
How much money did Accorsi make recommending a guy everyone already knows and has worked with? Don't spend it all in one place, Ernie.
If they knew they wanted Gettleman from the beginning...
EricJ : 12/10/2017 10:23 pm : link
then what was the point in hiring Acorsi? To make it seem like someone other than John Mara was making this decision?
He may be great
Aaroninma : 12/10/2017 10:27 pm : link
but I really wanted someone brand new, with no connection to past NYG regimes. I feel strongly that we need new blood all around.

probably. lets be serious, GM here is just a shield for the Mara family. So makes perfect sense that they would shield themselves from making the actual choice.
Can't be
AnskyJK : 12/10/2017 10:32 pm : link
I'm not going to believe this yet based on BBV but If true, would be a huge shame to not even hear other people's vision. Also- he's been out of work for a year, who else is calling him?
I want someone from Pittsburg
BigBlueDownTheShore : 12/10/2017 10:35 pm : link
Rooney Mara connection would make it almost an in-house move and Pittsburgh is a way more stable organization then we have ever been. They are consistently good.

Probably to slip Ernie a nice Consultant's fee for Christmas.

Says Hi
if true
old man : 12/10/2017 10:39 pm : link
Then its status quo.
Ownership excessively involved; 2017= 1964. And no League help coming.
Giants could be the new Browns.
Also if true and unless there's another GM firing what's the rush? He'll be available as part of a real search...unless they hunted around and nobody wants it or will be allowed to interview.
He'll be 67 years old next year
moespree : 12/10/2017 10:39 pm : link
In comparison Ernie Accorsi left the team when he was 66. How long do is he going to stay for? The Giants are a total rebuild. Will he even be GM past 3 or 4 drafts? He'll be in his early 70s by that point.

He’s GM in name only. We know the real GM
Sad but probably true
moespree : 12/10/2017 10:42 pm : link
Not much to counter that argument if you go with a GM who will probably stay less than 5 years.
Would be a good move
joeinpa : 12/10/2017 10:44 pm : link
Giants have been a winning franchise. I would like someone who is aware of and respects their traditions and way of doing things

Giants have had success promoting from within and Gettleman fits that criteria

I d also be ok with Schwartz as coach.

Those criticizing Mara for having the final word on a GM hiring, must not understand the role of a C. E. O.

SoZKillA : 12/10/2017 10:46 pm : link
Mara is a fucking wimp who is scared to take chances and go out of the organization. This move will ensure all these idiot scouts will be brought back too. Same shit, different year for the next few seasons coming up. Blame stubborn fool Mara.
I would not like this move
bigbluehoya : 12/10/2017 10:48 pm : link
I fail to see the upside of hiring a 65+ GM, not to mention rushing to the altar to do so before having the opportunity to interview guys who currently have actual fucking jobs.
Lame
illmatic : 12/10/2017 10:50 pm : link

It's a typical Mara move.
FStubbs : 12/10/2017 10:50 pm : link
And terrible because most of the same scouts and same failed philosophy will be in place.

Unless these guys are really just public faces while Chris Mara (mis)manages the roster.

That interviewed for the SF GM position last year but didn’t get it? Guy really seemed to know his stuff. He’s African American, bald and probably early 40s. I can’t remember his name for the life of me, but I was always impressed with his knowledge. Hope we at least talk to him unless he landed somewhere else.

Did I miss something where the Browns have had even a mediocre GM in the past two decades? But if we hire a guy who has a better track record than any Browns GM I can recall, we're going to be a losing franchise?

What was the word on Gettleman in Carolina? I heard on the Lombardi podcast that he ran himself out of town because he didn't want to overpay some of the sacred cows, which went contrary to Richardson. Was that your read?
Not my first choice
WillVAB : 12/10/2017 11:30 pm : link
But the Giants could do worse. I don’t think the Giants want to go with some unproven new GM and be the team that gives him on the job training. It’s too critical of a juncture for the franchise. The new GM is going to immediately be faced with decisions that will shape the next 5-10 years of the franchise.

They know him, he's part of the "family," they're already comfortable with him.

It would not be good for them to continue with the same hiring practices that led them to this shipwreck. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I look at the roster Gettleman has put together down in Carolina and I can't help but wonder what is everyone complaining about?

This guy consistently hits on his draft picks and manages the cap well. Isn't that a GM's job?

Okay, so it looks like he's an asshole that the players hated. Well as fans it isn't like we'll ever have to spend time with him personally. We just have to watch the team he puts on the field...apparently he does a good job at that.

Gettleman has an eye for talent and the b@lls to make tough decisions. I can get behind a guy like that. I don't like his age... I'd prefer not going through this process again in 3-4 years, unless the plan is to groom Abrams and elevate from within.

Well. Good luck. He didn’t exactly do any better than Reese in that department.

Have you paid attention to the team he built in Carolina?

Very generous on that Panther list and exceedingly negative on the Giants.

I look at the roster Gettleman has put together down in Carolina and I can't help but wonder what is everyone complaining about?

This guy consistently hits on his draft picks and manages the cap well. Isn't that a GM's job?

You're talking about players who were there when he got the job.

Thanks for taking the time to list these for comparison. Pretty much proves the point - Gettleman may not give people the warm and fuzzies, but he’s got a track record of drafting very well.

None of those players from 2014 are on the team anymore. He's blown multiple first and second round picks. If the Giants had multiple drafts like this Eric's servers would be liquid.
I have no problem
AnnapolisMike : 12/11/2017 9:13 am : link
with the Giants staying with guys who have been with the organization. By most accounts Gettleman is a good personnel guy and Mara knows what he is getting. If the Giants think he is the right guy...who am I to argue. I have seen 5 Giant Superbowls since I was 18. I am not in a position to really complain all that much.
And let's calm down with Funchess
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/11/2017 9:18 am : link
He hasn't done a damn thing to justify moving a second and a third round pick for. It's year three and he still hasn't had a 1000 yard season.

Reese vs Gettleman comparison is all well and good. But Reese had a very good track record as a GM before 2013. So...while Gettleman took some good players in that time frame, it's a pretty small sample size.
Not saying that he won't do well

But the maras seem more and more like terrified children grasping at the closest most familiar straws.

That said, the draft part, the part we fandom watch, is not rocket science, he may well do a rational job at it.

pick. His resume is better than most other candidates we have. Those wanting to hire a "no name" are taking a big chance like with McAdoo. Also I have yet to see one coaching or GM candidate that BBI likes, which tells me know on has any idea. If Gettleman is the guy then lets get it done and move forward. We need consistency now.

I see your point, but I'm not sure the McAdoo comparison is appropriate. The problem with hiring McAdoo was that he had such a thin resume. 2 years as OC with the same organization, working under an offensive HC.

We forget that team brass runs into these guys all the time, so they are already going to have an impression of guys like Caserio and Wolf.
Well . the macadoo hire
idiotsavant : 12/11/2017 9:38 am : link
Seems to have been done without any analytical thinking.

It's all relationship based, as opposed to concept based. So. Whereas it may work, its obviously very limiting in terms of your number of prospects.

The idea of moving people up, assistant GM's, heads of scouting... Of course that would be risky in the absence of concepts, analysis, and thinking about guiding goals, stats and so forth. Or in the absence of insider information from other teams..

Well at least they did their due diligence and interviewed um well nobody. How can they hire Gettleman without waiting to interview candidates like Wolf, DeCosta, Caserio, etc. Mara needs to be more open to change. Sure the McAdoo hire didn't work out but that shouldn't prevent them from hiring someone with no ties to the organization. Great so the plan is obviously to hire Gettleman then when he retires replace him with Abrams.

Also worth noting that during Gettleman's four years the Panthers won the NFC South 3 times, in what is a very competitive division.

that Caserio is willing to listen. Outside of that, we have no idea whether Wolf or DeCosta would even consider the opening. So...let's give Mara the benefit of the doubt. There might be general knowledge within the football world that guys like Wolf and DeCosta are untouchable...we don't really know. They haven't interviewed anywhere else...ever.

why in the world should we give this ownership the benefit of the doubt? the last signficant hire they made was another insider candidate who turned out to be a disaster.

and what in the world is the rush? there's no other currently open GM job that they're competing with. and even if there was, this would be the plum job to get - a chance to hire your own coach and a top two draft pick with an organization that doesn't hesitate to spend money. as other posters have said, maybe a professional approach that involves a thorough analysis of the Giants organization might be in order, as opposed to just calling up Ernie and asking him which of his buddies he likes best.

What was the word on Gettleman in Carolina? I heard on the Lombardi podcast that he ran himself out of town because he didn't want to overpay some of the sacred cows, which went contrary to Richardson. Was that your read?
Not my first choice

Behind the scenes, Jerry richardson was on board with letting Smith and Williams go - he just didn't want to be the bad guy - so Gettleman was happy to oblige. Where things went south is when Gettleman was looking at what to do with Olsen and Thomas Davis. He explored options of trading, restructuring and releasing them and the two guys complained to Richardson, and being his favorite players, they won and Gettleman lost.

But Richardson hasn't made many good decisions since his heart transplant. He took control away from the one son who actually had a decent football mind and he's had some really odd press conferences where he appears nearly out of it - and word is, he often is.

I don't hold the Carolina situation against Gettleman - in fact, it strengthens his reputation as being a hard-nosed GM, IMO.

Thanks. I agree that that is a positive for Gettleman.
I agree with FatMan on this.
Ira : 12/11/2017 2:46 pm : link
Gettleman has a vey good record in the two most important areas a gm has to deal with - evaluating talent and managing the cap. A good example of his drafting success was selecting James Bradberry late in the 2nd round - a small school corner who has played better than some first round picks that year (including our own).
OK. So presuming it's not a terrible choice
idiotsavant : 12/11/2017 3:14 pm : link
Does he have the cajones and / or the insight to redirect Mara towards a forward thinking or at least rational choice of head coach and system?

Remember with macadoo they tried to use "progression not revolution" which turned out to mean something less than all that

Expect a wholesale dumping of the current offensive offensive theme.

So. In addition to a decent head scout talent and scouting group you need a system guru or proven functionary with a clear vision.

Who? And which system.

I have been pushing outside zone running and play action ala Atlanta etc. Others think Pat's can be copied.

We don't really expect more OLers sitting passively on their heels waiting for attacking DLs and LBs and the quick short just in time dump off pass 'as a run'.

There is no 'progressing' out of that silliness.
