NFT: MLB Winter Meetings Day 1

DaddyM89 : 12/11/2017 1:54 am
Should promise to be a crazy 4 days down in Orlando. Things get kicked off with Stanton being introduced to the Yankees at 2PM. Some of the hot topics heading into the week:

- How will Red Sox respond to Yankees landing Stanton. Don't be surprised to see them throw a ton of money at a JD Martinez or Eric Hosmer.

- Will the Giants or Cards land a blockbuster deal after being spurned by Stanton?

- Some early rumbling Harvey could be on the trade block for the Mets. May be best for both parties to part at this point.

- Will yankees address their need for a starting pitcher? Have been linked to Cobb for weeks now but may have to get creative with payroll to sign him in. (a precursor could be a trade of Headley, Gardner, or Ellsbury (although they'd have to eat a lot of Elllsbury's contract)

- Who will overpay for Darvish and Arrietta? Wondering if they both get over $200 Million.

Let the madness begin!
Looks like trade offical

But theyve had over 50 Mill come off the books. And they feel they need to trade a starter for a reliever? When their rotation is already fragile with little depth. And there are quality bullpen arms out there they can go out and easily sign. But Alderson is already bitching about the price for free agent relievers. Hard to be optimistic, with this dumbass running the team

I think Archer is really overrated. He gives up way too many homers. Looks great when he's on but loses command on a moment's notice. I would not be in favor of trading those guys for him.

Plus, because Tampa is in division, I'm sure that the cost to do business with the Yanks will be VERY high. I think there are trade targets with similar upsides who would not cost an "in-division" premium.

My hope is that the Yanks try to engage the DBacks on Robbie Ray and ask about Corbin to get a #5 SP vet option who can also pitch from the pen. The Yanks might have to part with Frazier, Acevedo plus 3 more to get that kind of return- or put Grey in the deal, IMO. Still, I think Ray can get even better than he was last year.

The Braves inquired about him at least twice over the past year. The rumored asking price was insane but it would be even higher to trade him to a division rival and nearly guarantee them a WS appearance.

Not much else out there. They desperately need more offense. Granted last year was a down year for both Betts and Bogaerts, but they need some power. Maybe they stay put, resign Moreland and reengage next year, but that most likely means we aren't going anywhere this year. Its a tough situation.

Alderson walks in saying, hey, we're here to do business. Walks out after having done nothing, complaining that everything is too expensive and all the other teams are dumb. He'll wait and sign a fringe middle reliever or outfielder in the middle of January. Likely an often injured one and will tell you he'll be a steal if he stays healthy. Same thing every year. This one will be no different.

My rationale is that I think Harvey can at least be a decent reliever in 2018 as a worst case scenario. He actually held velocity in the early innings last year but would completely lose it by the 3rd or 4th inning. Ugh.
Does Profar even have options left?

Profar
DanMetroMan : 12/11/2017 3:57 pm : link
is out of options, I would not do this deal. Profar for all of his talent is a career .229 MLB hitter, solid but unspectacular season in the PCL this past year. No problem liking him as a lottery ticket but no thanks for Harvey

Profar.. yay. That's so exciting!

Metnut : 12/11/2017 3:58 pm : link
Harvey? We've already taken the lumps during his recovery last year. How about maybe reaping the rewards when he's pitching for a contract and as motivated as he'll ever be? Mets are in desperate need of starting pitching and can afford to deal away the lottery ticket that Harvey is IMO unless a real asset (not Profar) comes back.
Seems like Harvey is gonna get dealt

Mets folks believe there's no chance Matt Harvey will be traded. Coming off a tough year, his value is at its lowest, and now that they've tendered him a contract, no point in giving him away.
So unless the Mets sign
Metnut : 12/11/2017 4:14 pm : link
a pitcher, if they deal Harvey they will have Gsellmen, Lugo, Matz and Wheeler filling 3 rotation spots. Wheeler and Matz has shown ZERO ability to pitch through an entire season and didn't really look all that effective when "healthy" in 2017 either. Lugo has a torn ligament in his arm and clearly ran out of gas last year too. Gsellmen was one of the worst regular starting pitchers in MLB last year (to be fair, so was Harvey).

The starting pitching market is thin and does anyone have faith in the Mets to outbid other teams for any of the "good" starters out there?

Also, Bartolo Colon would be a joke signing. He had an ERA of almost 6.50 last year and will turn 45 next season.

I understand that there's a real chance that Harvey just sucks in 2018 and that the "Dark Knight" likely isn't coming back, but a lot of things are going to have to go right for the Mets to contend again in 2018, and a $6M or so lottery ticket with Harvey is a gamble I think the team needs to take.
Yes Colon
pjcas18 : 12/11/2017 4:21 pm : link
would be a joke and I mentioned him facetiously, however, he'd fit right in with the rest of the 2017 Mets rotation scrap heap:

Quote:

Harvey: 5 - 7 6.7 ERA, 1.694 WHIP, 63 ERA+, 6.37 FIP
Wheeler: 3 - 7, 5.21 ERA 1.58 WHIP, 81 ERA+, 5.03 FIP
Matz: 2 - 7, 6.08 ERA 1.53 WHIP 70 ERA+ 5.05 FIP

Enjoy NYC on a great team, get your ass off the bench every now and then to pinch run, and keep collecting those fat checks. I didn't think it was realistic to trade him anyway - salary aside, there's still three years left on that deal. Who would want him for three years at any price right now? Eric on Li : 12/11/2017 6:51 pm : link
I actually think he's a very good option for the Mets. Low K rate, some pop, was rated the 2nd best defensive 2B last year even in a down year. Has played ~140 games 7 straight years. His numbers were down last year because his BABIP dropped like 79 points YOY, if he bounces back he could be a big upgrade at the top of the lineup and in the field.

They need a lot more than him before they are competing for the postseason. Hopefully, they give up a haul.

They have something like only 7 million committed to salaries next season. They are going to be huge players in FA and the trade markets.

Great. They have a lot of work to do.
Marlins still open for biz

#Marlins pushing Ozuna, telling teams he will be easier to acquire (lower acquisition cost) than Yelich. Two years of control for Ozuna, five for Yelich.

Taking on Prado will likely be a condition for either. Would love to see Sandy get aggressive and creative, but seems unlikely.

Enjoy NYC on a great team, get your ass off the bench every now and then to pinch run, and keep collecting those fat checks. I didn't think it was realistic to trade him anyway - salary aside, there's still three years left on that deal. Who would want him for three years at any price right now? Maybe once it gets down to two we can swing something.

No way is he worth his contract. However at half the price( Yanks are rumored eat half the contract) he would be that bad. He has a very good defensively and has speed. He still can hit somewhat. He can be valuable on a team who needs an CF.
So, Cashman called Judge when Cash was

Ellsburys skills have seriously eroded. He has no pop whatsoever. Barely gap doubles power.
I like that they're "willing to discuss" trading Harvey

now that he's a broken down shell.
Ellsbury's still a very good defensive CFer, but I wonder whether
yatqb : 12/11/2017 11:31 pm : link
he'd be attractive to another team even at a big discount. The Giants want a CF, but are in on Billy Hamilton.
