NFT: Battery powered lawnmowers

jgambrosio : 12/11/2017 12:55 pm
Anyone got one of these? Closing on a place tomorrow and I need to start taking care of my lawn (was under HOA before). Third of an acre so nothing huge, thinking of getting a cordless lawnmower. Any recommendations?
If you keep a thick lawn I'd discourage a battery powered mower.

They generally lack the power to get through thicker lawns efficiently.
I have ECHO battery

Just got it late this summer used it for 2 months and I love it.
ECHO 21 in. 58-Volt Brushless Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery Push Lawn Mower - Two 4.0 Ah Batteries and Charger Included

usually one battery was enough to get through my yard, but it came with 2 batteries that can be loaded, so I just turned the key to kick in the second battery if needed.

I hated my gas pull start mower and getting the gas and oil mix right.

so am a bit biased.

I've had one for years

I have a small yard, so it's not such a big deal.

The only downside is that if I let my yard get overgrown I may not have enough battery power to finish on one charge.

Mine is an old Black and Decker with a sealed, non-replaceable, lead-acid battery. The newer ones have LI-ION batteries you can swap out just like you can with a cordless drill.

I have to say, never having to worry about the thing starting or running out of gas or doing small engine maintenance (plugs/oil/etc.) is a huge huge plus. Plus it's very quiet and much lighter compared to a gas mower.

Plus, gas-powered lawn and yard equipment are huge polluters, relatively speaking.

Very solid mower and with 2 batteries should work for your yard size. I have ~0.3 acres and could easily do it all on 2 batteries. It does struggle more than a gas mower if the grass is thick/wet, but that's not surprising. The Ryobi is also easily adjustable for different grass lengths (one pull vs adjusting each wheel separately on my old gas mower) and has push button start.

It also folds up nicely so that it uses very little space and is much lighter than a gas mower which makes turns and hills a lot easier. Another benefit is you don't smell like gas fumes when you finish!

2nd the 'quiet' bonus

I was able to easily listen to the BBI podcasts while mowing this summer without blowing out my eardrums!
Thanks for starting this thread

I will be looking for a replacement mower this spring and was going to be looking into battery mowers.

With 2 batteries, it takes care of my 0.5 acre lot fine.
my neighbor has one

and I've been keeping close tabs on the results as I'm interested in getting one myself. The convenience and lack of noise are awesome. He never allowed his grass to get too long where he had a problem.

But, the quality of the cut was sub-par. Even when the grass was normal length when he started I clearly noticed where the mower didn't cut all the grass, even left lines of uncut grass in certain areas. Maybe it was just the model mower he has or maybe that's a result of less power, i don't know. But it has certainly soured me on the idea of a battery mower.
